especially if we get involved in Syria and have troops on the ground. This may happen, which means some of yall will spend some time away from your home, family and friends. Do not regret your choice since you already signed the contract! This is what you guys are signing up for - to help injured soldiers and civilians in the third world country while sacrificng our comfort. Good Luck

Errr.... anyone who signs up for HPSP should assume that they will be deployed at some point during their 3-4 years on active duty; this is regardless of what is happening in the world. If you don't deploy during your time, lucky you... but that's not the norm.

Why would anyone join the military and expect not to deploy? What a silly silly statement.

Also, if we do engage in another conflict, this is when our country needs members of the armed forces the most.

Speaking as someone who has worn those boots in 3rd world countries, I appreciate the fact that there are men and women willing to leave their families and friends to take care of me if I need it. Just another perspective.

Met some residents, HPSP and USUHS dudes hoping that they will be at Tripler or Walter Reed the whole time they are paying back. They didnt think that a deployment was a possibility for them since we are winding down in Afghan. Oh boy, they are in for a big shocks!

Its a possibility (though of course it shouldn't be expected...the better assumption is that you will deploy sometime). With OIF over and OEF coming to a close--and in modern day sequester America--its quite possible that we wont be engaging in any serious conflict for the next few years. So someone starting their 4 year payback now may very well complete it without deploying (happened to plenty of folks during the 90s). I would never condone this as a good assumption to make, but it is a realistic possibility (in this decade at least).

What makes you so sure that we're gonna fet involved in Syria? Of course we might, but I would bet not (the American public isn't looking for that fight ... certainly not BOG)
 
Well, if a long "war" happens, DOD doesn't have to worry about the sequestration crap anymore. Many docs and Soldiers who don't want to go through numeorus deployments will get out VOLUNTARILY.
 
Now is probably a bad time to join HPSP if you don't want to deploy. The US is pretty burned out on war right now. In 10 years, we'll be about ready for another one though and that's just when people joining now would be hitting the real world barring a GMO tour...
 
Also, there were BOG in Eritreia/Djoubouti/Somalia and Yemen with no significant medical community involvement. Doubt this is that different.

They will need a lot more troops than that. They will need several hundred thousand troops to secure chemical sites and to stabilize and rebuild the country. Sounds familiar to what happened a decade earlier, eh? Just two different faces leading the propaganda

actually had people listened to GEN Shinseki the first go round and actually done the "several hundred thousand troops" approach (which is what he said it would take) i would wager iraq would be a very different place. instead he was railroaded out of town and we spent 8 years of half measures (shout out to breaking bad fans out there) stabilizing the place so we could leave. not leave a rebuilt better country, but just leave without leaving behind a raging civil war.

i could see us setting up shop in western iraq just to make assad nervous. but invading the place? meh. look how long it took us to invade iraq after those chemical weapon attacks.

unconventionally-- yeah. those special forces peeps have wet dreams about this stuff. they're probably already involved, who knows. but short of an invasion (kuwait) that directly threatens an interest (korea) we aren't getting involved anytime soon. if genocide and killing innocent civilians were a priority, we'd have been involved in africa long ago. syrians killing syrians is not high on that list.

i must admit the OP is awfully troll-ish. look at the forum-- did we really need a thread stating that when wars start people may deploy? lol if anything sounds like a kid who didn't make the team sitting on the sidelines stating how great it is to not be sweating it through two a days. if you catch my drift.

According to his posts he's been in twice, before medical school and again to pay back the HPSP scholarship after he left medical school.
 
I don't think its true. I heard only USUHS grads go to the Middle East. The rest are only allowed to go to Hawaii, Germany, Spain and GTMO if they beg.

Well, some recruiters told many that it is unlikely for doctors to be deployed. they said usually only PA's or medics; they seemed convincing. Just telling you what some recruiters said.

i think the deployment angle has been beaten to death. and as much as recruiters lie/bend the the truth, i've not heard of any of them tell potential recruits doctors don't deploy. maybe 10 years ago, but no one can say that with a straight face for quite awhile now.

your PSA is noted. maybe you should move on to something else?
