So I have just recently switched to pre-OT. I have set up clinical experience with a rehab clinic for summer, and was looking for something to do in fall. One of my professors (not related to OT) suggested that I do research at an autistic center in the area. This center has no OTs, only Behavior Analysts. I have worked with several autistic kids in the past, and absolutely love working with kids. I am wondering if this would be considered good experience for grad school, or if I should look into volunteering in a rehab center. Although I would really enjoy research with the center, I want to do something that will help me get into OT programs.

Also, on a side note, how many hours of clinical experience looks good for OT programs?

I would say to find a pediatric clinic that deals with autistic/adhd/special needs students. OTs are big in that area with kids. A school setting would also be good if you are interested with children.

Word of advice: Do 3 or more different areas of OT when shadowing, it make you stand out with the diversity. Try inpatient/outpatient/pediatrics/spinal cord injuries/hand/upper extremities rehab/home health!

The research may be good for experience and to learn more about autism. Also, you may put that on your resume and this can help you stand out for scholarships.

Best advice yet. Please get experience in more than just pediatrics. I assisted with interviews and one thing that would come up a lot is a person's experience with just one population. They really want to make sure you understand all the OTs can offer.
