Got this quote from the military dentistry forum:

"Also, if you have an advanced degree before you signed up with the military (like a MS or PhD that is science related) then you will be compensated for that by an earlier date of rank (instead of your date of rank being 2007 when you graduate, it would be 2005 with a MS or 2003 with a PhD). This gets you promoted earlier and more money much faster!"

Anybody know if this true and where I can find some more info on it. I have an M.S. degree already and would not mind getting some extra cash for it.

Thanks for any input!

Here's the appropriate Army document. You can do a search if you are Navy or Air Force.

From what I've been told, the key is showing how your previous degree will enhance your job as a health professional.

For instance, I have an M.S. in Physical Therapy. Should I go into a field like PM&R or ortho, I could make a fantastic case for how my experience as a P.T. would make me a better physiatrist or orthopedic surgeon.

I had gotten an MS in biology prior to medical school. Applied for and received 2 years credit. This changed my date of rank to 2 years before I came onto active duty Army (from HPSP). I made Major at 4 years, instead of 6 like my prior residency-mates. This does not, however, affect the pay raise when you go over 6 years in the medical corps, nor change your years of service.

Someone behind me in residency had a PhD in a biophysics related specialty, and was reset 4 years of credit.

I spoke with someone else several months ago, who was having difficulty with the folks who authorize this, but his masters was in a pathology related discipline, and they were giving him a hard time about relevance to internal medicine.

Good luck. This is definitely worth some calls and emailing to get done.

Entry Grade Credit is dictated by OPNAVINST 1120.4. You get 2 years for a qualifying masters (not all masters count) and 3 years for a qualifying doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD, DC)

IF an advanced degree is noted in your record, then what additional steps must you take to get prior service credit?

I came in the Navy as an O-3 because of my Pharm.D in 2002. I'm a first year at USUHS now. Am I eligible for this credit when I graduate? I already received some sort of credit since I came in as an 0-3. If I got the credit, I would put on O-4 about one year after graduation.

Should not require any additional steps. As long as your service knows you have the degree. Check with your program to be sure they are aware.

Awesome! I have an MS in biomaterials---listed as a materials science and engineering degree. (1) Do you think that my training will count? (2) Who do I speak with at the Air Force? I don't need a certain person's name, but maybe an office title that I should look up.
