Tuesday, I visited a general dentist to have my lower left wisdom tooth examined. He said he could take care of it in about 45 minutes; no big deal.

After two and a half hours of pulling, twisting, elevating, etc. he determined that it wouldn't come out in one piece so he began to section it. After another hour and a half of PAIN he was able to get 3/4 of the tooth out.

Finally, after 30 additional minutes of the remaining tooth slipping through the forceps over and over he decided to leave it in my jaw. He prescribed an antibiotic and a pain pill and sent me home.

I have been in pain ever since (4 -5 days). The pain disappears with a prescription pain pill but it returns as soon as the pill wears off. Swelling has gone down and the hole is closing but it feels like I have terrible toothache as soon as the medication wears off. My dentist is out of town until Monday.

Any ideas on what is hurting: dry socket, tooth fragment, nerve damage to adjacent tooth, etc. ? Please hurry I'm almost out of pain medication!!😡

It is common if the root had a hook on it that they will leave part of it in if it breaks out. It should heal right over and not give you any problem! Did you see the films before they started to extract? Was there a hook, probably on the mesial root. As for the dry socket, you need to go back and get a syringe from him to keep it clean but if its killing you, the dentist will "pack" it and you will be out of pain!

My 2 cents

I appreciate the advice. I'm going back Monday for another visit. There's usually so much good info on this site that I was kinda getting a SDN "second opinion" before I go.

The piece of tooth extracted had a normal root tip. However, he said the part that broke off had an enlarged or swollen root tip which was the reason it wouldn't come out no matter how hard he pulled.

Any other ideas from anyone on what has been causing the constant toothache sensation since Day 1 would be appreciated.

What's the treatment currently taught in dental school for a dry socket? My dentist simply stirs up the socket to cause additional bleeding so a new clot forms. I've read on some dental sites that this is no longer recommended.
