Extracurricular advice

1) How many hours of occasional shadowing would you say you've acquired through random opportunities? What specialties?

2) Teaching includes TA, tutoring, coaching, mentoring.

1. I've shadowed podiatrists and FM residents for a total of 30-40 hrs. Not done shadowing though, going to do more in other specialities this summer.

do you think i need more clinical experience, perhaps through a paid position?

1) Podiatry shadowing isn't what we're looking for ( though you can still list it). Attending physician observation will give you a clearer idea of what you'll be doing for the next 40 years, compared to trainees. If you subtract the pod hours, how many hours of resident MD or DO shadowing do you have?

2) You didn't give the hours and timeframes of the active clinical experience you already have, so I don't know if you need more.

30 hours of family med attending shadowing, i should be aiming for like 70 right?

hospice i have 50 hours over the past year (ongoing), clinic assistant i have 50 hours over the past 3 months (ongoing), 80 hrs through another volunteering endeavor and does clinical research count as clinical exp?

1) About 50 is the average listed (not counting non-physician shadowing you choose to include). I'd consider 40 to be a minimum.

2) 180 hours of active clinical experience is good, provided it's spread out over more than a year's time.

Clinical research time can count, but it depends on various factors. Can you describe your role and the point of the project? Even without it, though, you'll be fine.

in the clinical research project, i've helped interview patients (to fill out a psychological assessment) and entered data sheets from said interviews.

Are the study participants already carrying a diagnosis, which you are monitoring, or are you screening a general population looking for factors indicating future disease risk or an undiagnosed condition?

If the former, will participating in any way assist the patient with their health issue? Will studies done during the project become a part of the participants' health record maintained by their physicians?

Veterans at risk for PTSD due to military experiences, those who qualify are placed into a program that seeks to recover functional deficits and help them readjust to society

Does your research group continue to monitor/evaluate the qualifying participants to track their progress in the program?

Do something non-science/health related... show some interest in something outside of healthcare too my friend. It'll make you a more well rounded applicant. Also, get some leadership experience!

the head of the group does track progress yes, not myself personally

Lol fair, you didn't mention it in your original post so I assumed these were all the activities you were involved in. You're looking pretty good though if you ask me!

As a research assistant you are not expected to have personal involvement in every part of the project, but for the sake of your application and future interview questions, you should have a global understanding of the hypothesis being tested, all the methods of gathering data, how the data will be analyzed, and what will be done with it. You might ask to read the original IRB proposal if any of these are unknown to you.

If the PI tracks the data, communicates it to the treatment team, and it is somehow being used to guide the therapy for PTSD of those being followed, then this would be "clinical" research for AMCAS purposes, since the subjects would get a therapeutic benefit from their involvement with your team.

thanks for the help with all of this, appreciate it

Nothing you've listed sounds like fun. Please develop a hobby.
Also, nothing you've listed suggests you've had adequate exposure to actual medical practice.
