Depends on the class (some you can re-do in the summer), but happens every year at my school. Very few people though.

Some people are just not ready to move on to the next level, especially when that next level is putting hands on a patient. I don't really see why people have issues with students being held back, failing a class is on them, not the school. At least that's how it is where I am.

I'm thinking about classes like histology or something similar in nature, where many schools offer a quick retake in the summer and a cumulative exam. To retake an entire year, two semester, over a small slip up, is a bit exaggerated.

I just texted one of my dental student friends at BU (a 4th year) about this.
Here is what they responded:

"lol i remember rumors like that . there is something like if u fail two classes u have to repeat. if you get a D u might have to repeat.
who gets into dental and fails their first physio class tho
out of the 8 or so ppl we lost in first year, i think 6 or 7 of them just couldnt cut it academically"

My school has a policy to repeat whole year or dismissal if one fails a class(D1). Is this normal? This is Boston U.

here at rutgers, if you fail ONE class, you can remediate it in the summer.

Yes. You will repeat the year. It happened to 3-4 people in my D1 class back in 2007.

Also, if your average GPA is below is 2.5, then you could get kicked out of the program.

You are only allowed to get 1 "D" grade per year, any more, you repeat the year.
