Im pretty sure it has to be in terms of difficulty MD/Veterinarian>Dentistry/PA/Pharmacy>Nursing

having done both dental and medical school, for me personally dental school was WAY harder than medical school both in terms of coursework and requirements to graduate. It's not a reflection of the fields of both dentistry or medicine per say, just the process of getting your DDS or MD/DO. If med school doesn't work out for you I do not recommend attempting dental school as a 'backup'.

Am I missing something? If he/she retakes and does well enough on Step, can't he match into FM or IM somewhere?

OP were you born in the US, English as first language?

The most recent NRMP data shows 73 unfilled FM programs and 26 unfilled IM programs.
