Madscientist,

So i did write to the director of the MPH program and unfortunately I was not accepted into the MPH program. I was not surprised at all, since I do not have 2 years of work experience yet (currently about 1 and a half years post graduation) or a "higher" degree.

However, I did get into the International Health Program in Hopkins.
I had only applied to two schools: Hopkins and Yale. And still waiting on Yale's desicion. Apparently, they're STILL reviewing my application. All this waiting has taken my appetite away 😛.

Anyway, Thanks for the help and good luck to you.

I've been accepted to: Columbia (Health Policy and Management), Berkeley (Health Policy and Management), UCLA (Health Services), and Johns Hopkins (Dual Degree program MPH/MBA)

Still waiting on: Yale (but I don't really care if I get in because I'm not going to go there)

I've narrowed it down to Berkeley and Johns Hopkins... such a hard choice!! Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated 🙂 🙂

Ha ha,I emailed Yale to ask them how long they would take in deciding on my application and they asked to stay patient. They are SO SLOW!

kinda strange Yale's taking so long with you guys when they were so quick to reject me, haha

Wow, it's incredible that people here seem to be applying to the same schools. Apparently this year has presented a record increase in applicants of public health programs.

Rejection -- UMich - Epid, Univ. of Maryland College Park - Epid

Waiting: Drexel - Epid; Columbia - 1) Epid, 2)Environmental Health Sciences; Yale - Chronic Disease Epid; Univ. Kentucky - Epid; Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore - M.S. Epid + Preventative Medicine; UMich - Environmental Health Sciences

In retrospect, Environmental Health Sciences seems to be a better fit in regard to my interests. I chose Epid because that seems like the pre-med field of choice after Health Management. So I've called several programs to switch concentrations which may be the reason why I've been waiting forever🙁

Congrats to everyone on their acceptances! That's so awesome =) I wish I knew where I was going...

As long as there is a decision, whatever freakin decision but atleast a decision! I wonder if it is even going to make a difference in my picking a school eventually. I've stopped bothering or emailing them now. another genuine WTF moment, eh ? 😉

Is anyone still waiting on a decision from the following schools?
-Yale
-UCLA

-U Washington
-Michigan

Admittedly, I submitted these applications all at their due date but if anyone has heard anything about what to expect, please let me know. I have school decisions to make by April 15!

So far I've been accepted to:
-Johns Hopkins (MHS, Dept. of Health, Behavior, and Society)
-Columbia (MPH, Sociomedical Science -- Public Health Research)

Thanks.

Cster0905, I feel your anxiousness! Our situations seem to be a bit reversed!

I have been admitted to UMich (MPH - HBHE), rejected from UNC (MPH - Health Behavior) and have yet to hear from Hopkins (MHS - International).

At least you know you're not alone! Good luck!

Hey Cster- What UNC program did you apply to? HBHE?

Hey Cster- What UNC program did you apply to? HBHE?

Yep, HBHE -- MPH.

I'm at an exceptional disadvantage bc I was an undergrad at UNC and received my major from the Dept. of Health Policy and Admin (HPAA).

UNC is notorious for being hypercritical of their undergrads, even though I did very well in the SPH.

Have you applied to the same program?

Someone here previously reported 'when it rains it pours' and I second that!
After a gruesome wait all through March I found 2 acceptances in my mailbox this morning!

I'm going to Harvard! (MPH Quantitative Methods)

Also accepted:
Johns Hopkins (MPH Quantitative Methods)
Still waiting:
Yale
UCLA

Congrats, Jetman! (I believe you might be quoting me!) I'm currently trying to decide between Harvard and Hopkins (HPM, particularly management) and am wondering how you made your decision, if you don't mind sharing.

Has anyone heard from BU or Yale or know when they usually send out decisions?
I just e-mailed the school to ask them the same question - 6 to 8 weeks from the time all your application material was submitted.

I submitted my app to Sophas on Jan. 1st. they sent it out near the end of January. I heard from Yale last week and Boston U yesterday...Good news from both. Both were snail mail! Good luck to you!

Just got off the phone with Yale. They are shooting to have all decisions mailed (snail mail) to applicants by the second week in April.

Sucks for people like me who have to make a final acceptance decision by April 15.

Hope this helps anyone.

Hey Cster- what made you make the transition from health administration to health behavior?

Is there something wrong with the HPAA department at UNC that made you want to switch public health concentrations? Please explain.

Senior:

There is nothing wrong with UNC's HPAA dept; in fact, it is probably the school's best, most reputable department and one of the best in the nation.

I made the switch because HPAA is too business-oriented for me. I will be heading to med school (knock on wood) when I finish my MPH and I really enjoy clinical science and that which can be applied in patient settings.

As an undergrad at UNC I conducted a lot of research between the SPH and the School of Medicine - which I've published - analyzing utilization trends of the presenting Hispanic population in the Emergency Department (ER).

I've always enjoyed social sciences and see myself, after med school and residency, working with the sociocultural components that influence individual and community utilization of healthcare to create interventions that provide better care and quality of care -- especially to underserved populations.

So, to develop that skill set, HBHE matches my interests much better for obvious reasons. HPAA provided great insight into the American healthcare system, however. I've just re-defined my interests.

I'm happy to answer any other questions.

In at Michigan and UNC!

Cster, WOW you got into some amazing places!!! You have a very tough decision make- what are you leaning towards?

I know you mentioned you went to UNC for undergrad? Are you leaning to go back to UNC or a different experience. I know a lot of people say go to a different grad. school to get different experiences and prespectives.

What is your top choice RIGHT now? Congrats again!

Senior, thanks.

I love Chapel Hill, I love Carolina basketball, and obviously UNC is GREAT school....but, I want a change.

Columbia, Emory, and Hopkins are my top choices now. UCLA will be if admitted.

Columbia - Ivy name, great school. Lots of resources in and around NYC. But, $$$ not only in tuition but living expenses.

Emory - Great school, plethora of PH-related agencies in ATL, including the CDC. Live here now and I know and like the area.

Hopkins - Duh, BUT they are the only school I've been admitted to that won't give me a MPH, which is my goal. I've heard, MPH or not, it's a very intense but rewarding school and you can write your proverbial health career ticket with a degree from there. Will need to be impressed when I visit in a week.

UCLA - Good school, CA weather. Expensive to live in LA and traffic. Amazing access to the Hispanic community which I'm interested in working with.

If I had to choose today, Columbia or Emory.

What a day!

Admitted to Michigan, UNC, and UCLA!

Damn, Cster- All top 5 public health schools.

A very tough decision, in deed, but it seems like you can't go wrong with UNC- your alma mater.

Hey guys,

I received an email from Yale yesterday saying I have been admitted. That too came only after an extremely assertive email (not rude, mind you) to them saying that I do have other choices to consider.

They said that my application was still under review and that it would take one more week, but wrote to me the very next day saying that I was admitted.

Wierd, make what you want to make of it.

But perhaps an email to them stating pressing urgency might help?

Thanks for your post! It inspired me to finally email Yale about my application while trying not to sound really impatient, but I am! I have to say yes or no to another MPH program by April 1st, this Tuesday. And without hearing anything from Yale as of today, it was about time I asked them if I'm admitted or rejected. I guess now I just wait some more on Yale.

Congratulations on the acceptance!! What program did you get admitted to? Are you planning on attending?

Wow, I guess I shall try my luck too. Maybe Yale will consider my situation then.

Although I never sent them a rude email before, they seem to not like people pressing them for a response.

Congrats on your acceptance by the way!

when did SOPAS send out your application to the universities, or when was it completed?

Did anyone apply to MPH program?

All of my decisions are finally in:

Accepted: Harvard, Columbia, Emory, BU, Oregon State, Tulane and USC.
Rejected: Berkeley 🙁

Now the decision process begins....

Accepted -- Michigan
Rejected -- Maryland (College Park)
Waiting -- Columbia, Yale, Drexel, Kentucky (don't ask...), M.S. program @ UMd-Baltimore

I've called Columbia and Yale several times and was told that my application is under review and that final decisions will be out by April 15.

Random question -- if you're told that a decision can't be made over the phone, is that a bad sign? I called Drexel and was told that a letter was sent out but that they can't tell me of the decision. Perhaps this is a way to prevent questioning?

I got accepted into the Health Promotion concentration at Columbia.. my top choice! So far, it is the only school I have been accepted to. I have been rejected from yale, berkeley and boston.

I am excited about Columbia and was wondering if others who were accepted to Columbia know what they are doing about living arrangements. Residence? Roomies?

I've been accepted to both these places and I have to make a decision soon. I would really love any input and feedback you all may have about these various schools and programs. Thanks!

hey buckyd,

I got accepted to the HPA program at Yale, and MHS in International Program at Hopkins. I dont know which one to choose. And besides I wish (like most of us here) my financial status was not such a strong determinant in choosing a program. For all I know, I might wait out for a year, get some 'real' public health experience, instead of just being a lab research assistant as i am right now, and then try my luck with a stronger application for scholarships.

Or maybe i'll wait out a year and apply directly to a PHD program instead.

It hurts my head to be thinking about this even in my dreams, as much as i dont want to.

I dont know! or perhaps i will take the age old route of infinite debt, in which i'll spend the rest of my life paying the loan, while still residing in an efficiency apartment when i'm in my late thirtys.

such wonderful choices we have!!!

Accepted at Yale by email as of this morning. So all you guys who've been waiting, they're finally getting back to us.

what time did you get interviewed? which program you got admitted to?
:hardy: i'm still waiting..

I just received an acceptance letter from SDSU's MPH program- Health Promotion concentration 😀

Accepted: Columbia, Hopkins

The question: Where should I go?

Background: Hopkins won't give me an MPH (it's called a Master in Health Science). Columbia will give me the MPH in global health (but it's a relatively new program and it doesn't come with the 75 percent reduction in tuition for year #2, like JHU).

So, to anyone in forum land, can you tell me if you think there is a lower value placed on the MHS v. the MPH. I strongly lean toward Hopkins. I've lived overseas and seen the scope and depth of Hopkins' work. BUT, I just might always wonder if I should have sucked up, spent more and gone to Columbia.

BTW, I just discovered this forum and I love it. 🙂

Accepted:
Columbia (Epidemiology)
Emory (Epidemiology)
Yale (Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases)
UMich (GenEpidemiology)
BU (Epidemiology)
UWash (MPH at Public Health Genetics Institute)

Still waiting: Johns Hopkins (MHs in Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology track)

I have no idea how I am going to decide. Does anyone know where I can find more information about how the epidemiology programs compare specifically, instead of the school in general?
April 15th is coming up way too soon...

Accepted Dartmouth (1/31) and Yale (4/01)... also London School of Economics MSc in International Health Policy (Feb.)

congratulations! i studied abroad at LSE last summer and absolutely LOVED it. the school is great, the faculty amazing, and there's no doubt that the academic atmosphere was much more relaxed than here in the US. going to the pub with my profs is a favorite and a norm. only thing is the dollar-pound exchange killed my pockets.

Has anyone heard from GW, Global Health? I still have not! The last email I got was early Feb and said that they were forwarding my completed application on to the department. I applied to 8 schools and beside Harvard(heard several weeks back) all the other schools got back to me with accept/reject letters back in Feb. I will email them I guess at the end of this week, but wanted to see if anyone else has been waiting for ages to hear from them. (not that it matters, as I already made my decision, but its the point, esp. since I had to pay a fee to SOPAS and a fee for the secondary application) ugh.

Accepted: Columbia, Hopkins

The question: Where should I go?
Just FYI, the global health MHS at Hopkins is considered a "professional" (rather than "academic") degree, which means that it is intended to begin and advance your career (I paraphrase their website here). Thus, unlike some MS degrees, it is not intended to be a stepping stone to a final degree (i.e., PhD), but rather a terminal degree in itself. I think you are smart to lean towards Hopkins in this situation - it is the top-ranked school and it is more affordable. Unless the Columbia name carries a lot more weight in your country, I think Hopkins is a great choice.

Thanks! Yeah the exchange rate is pretty rough. As a Canadian, our dollar right now is also below the $US, but nothing close to the pound... yikes!

Congrats to everyone!

Accepted: BU and Columbia
Waiting on: Yale and JH

I am surprised on the tardiness of the two latter schools responses.

Hi
Even I endorse your views about EMORY. I got into HPM . I am based at Agra, India and can be reached at [email protected]. Would love to form a virtual group of All Indians at Emory.

Accepted: Emory Distance Learning MPH

Waiting: BU (although already taking 6 creds as guest student)

Hi friends! I haven't been on this site in awhile. Wow this list has grown.

Okay- so I'm debating between Columbia and Emory (having a tough time deciding)

Accepted:
University of Minnesota: MPH in Epi
UIC: MPH in Epi- MCH concentration
Columbia: MPH in Epi

Waiting:
Hopkins: MHS in Global Epi and Prevention
Boston: MPH in Epi

:laugh:Funny story about UIC-- I got accepted even though my secondary application hasn't been submitted. Is this a fluke? Has this happened to anyone else?
