Fall 2009 Applications!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on the interview! I think that's a good sign. I coincidentally interviewed with a UMich HPM faculty just recently for the Ph.D program. I see it as an opportunity for you to ask questions of the program, and for them to learn more about you. I was asked about my research interests, why I decided to pursue this path, and what my long-term interests were. In turn, I asked about the median time for degree completion, placements of graduating students, interdisciplinary opportunities, and how UMich compares to other schools I have applied to. These questions will be different from what you might be asked, but I think the main thing is that it's relatively low-stress as long as you see the process working both ways. Best of luck 👍

Did anyone apply to BU?

I started the application.... hesitating because I am hoping to hear back from other schools first. Anyone else?

Just found out Wednesday that I have been accepted to Yale's Health Management program! I submitted my app on 12/1.

I have an interview at Michigan on Monday and at Minnesota on the 13th. I have already been admitted to Saint Louis and am still waiting to hear from Harvard.

This is going to be an incredibly difficult decision! Any advice?!

I think I read someone say this in last year's thread, but I wish I had more confidence in myself from the start. In the middle of the process, I started thinking "well what if?" Applied to U Wash even though I don't really care to attend there.

Acceptances:

BU
Emory
Minn
Yale
SLU (my offer wasn't nearly as generous as the one listed earlier)
OSU

Waiting on:

Pitt
Michigan (pending the interview)

Not waiting on/don't care:

U Wash

gsbound,

How was the Minnesota interview? What did you think of the program? I am going up there soon and want to get myself prepared.

I'm going to Michigan tomorrow for their Visit Day, which is probably my top choice despite its size (I really wanted a small, more collaborative atmosphere which is why Yale is appealing)

For all of you with Michigan interviews/invites to visit day, what program did you apply for? I applied to Epi and have heard nothing back yet... thanks!

gsbound - congrats on all your acceptances. All for HMP, correct? Just curious, what is it about UW that turns you off?

gsbound, congrats on your acceptances👍....just curious,u've applied for the MHA program rite?

thanks guys. all were mph in health mgmt policy programs

the thing about u wash that turns me off is that I get the sense from their website that they don't really WANT me there. the website makes it seem like "hey, you better have some good experience...but we might let you in if you apply...maybe" which is great in a sense if you get accepted...cause then it shows that they saw something in your app that they liked. but I don't really want to be in that environment. and the faculty member i contacted was kinda dry.

GSBound, I got the same vibe from the U Wash website, which is why I didn't apply there.
I've been accepted to:
Yale (Epi of microbial diseases)
U of Minn (epidemiology)
Emory (global epidemiology)

Right now, I am leaning towards Emory. Does anyone have any insight?

Wow. I admit their site isn't as warm and fuzzy as, say, UNC's, but I applied to the MS in Epi program and I have had nothing but positive interactions with admissions staff so far. In fact, someone contacted me with (unsolicited) suggestions for improving my personal statement. I suppose that could be a turnoff for some, but I appreciated that they were interested in me enough to take the time to help me increase my chances of getting in. 🙂

I am finishing up my MPH in Epi here at the UW and have had wonderful experiences. I admit that I too was not really considering UW, mostly because I am from the east coast and didn't think I was going to move across the country for two years. However, after I was admitted I received a phonecall from one of the current students and because of speaking with her, I decided to attend Visit Days, which completely changed me outlook. I chose to attend UW over JHU and Michigan and have not once regretted my decision. It's a fantastic, challenging program, and while you may feel overwhelmed at times (not sure if that's grad school, UW, or both), you come out of it having learned so much and feeling so proud of your accomplishments. Plus, UW has great prospects for funding 😉 Through my Research Assistantship (RA), my degree is paid-for, and I get health insurance and a stipend. RAs are very common here (all of my friends have them). I know Public Health is different compared to other fields in that you usually have to fund your own Masters degree, but it's nice to be a part of an anomaly!

it may be different for hpap. and i may be wrong 🙂. i would still investigate them further and speak to more people there if i am accepted and can get a good offer.

Has anyone heard from UNC's Department of Epidemiology regarding admissions decisions on PhD applications? If so, how? Was your online applicant portal updated?

Also, anyone who has heard from GWU (specifically regarding MPH in Epi), how long after GWU received your application did you hear something? What did any e-mail you may have received say?

Thanks!

I applied to the same program and I am dying to hear from them. I just checked The Grad Cafe and someone just posted yesterday that they were accepted to the program via postal. Hopefully that means we'll know something soon, too! 🙂

Just heard from the Michigan HMP Doctoral Program in Health Services Organization and Policy (HSOP) 👍

So ... I e-mailed the Assistant to the Chair of Graduate Studies at UNC Epidemiology regarding the status of my PhD application, and this is what she said,

"Your application is in the review process. We hope to have all decisions
made no later than April 1 (March 15 if at all possible)."

April 1 is the date that was specified in the automated e-mail I received upon submitting my application, so it seems they can't promise anything at this stage...

Just got accepted into UNC (not epid though - sorry previous posters - which I could help ya)

First acceptance, now for the rest

Hey-
I also applied to UNCs epidemiology department for a PhD- haven't heard anything.
And I also applied to GWU for an MPH in epi - I just got an email from them earlier this week saying my application was complete so I'm not expecting to hear back from them yet about a decision..

Emory is the only school I've heard from so far... still waiting on all the others!

Goodluck!

Where else have you applied? What is your top choice?

I'm hoping I get into GW because I like their HIV/AIDS Studies graduate certificate. However, a partnership with the CDC through Emory is also enticing - I was accepted there last month. UNC PhD comes in third because it was my safety, and right now I'm not interested in teaching once I finish the MPH. Strangely enough, however, it's my alma mater. I have heard that receiving an advanced degree from the same school as your bachelor's isn't well received by future employers (in academia). It's like it's harder to get tenure that way.

What does anyone know or think about this?

Hello everyone

I applied to MHA at UNC and my application was completed in early january but i have not received any info about my application at all.. Has anyone got accepted/rejected or heard anything from them??

I am getting anxious since i am hoping on getting accepted to this program desperately..

I heard back from UNC earlier this week, and my app was submitted first week of December. Hope that gives an idea of the timeline.

After some deliberation, I decided to apply to BU for MPH after all. They have rolling admissions, although their priority deadline was Feb 1st. Do you think it's ok that I applied now? Hopefully it won't take forever to process through SOPHAS since they have everything already.

According to USnews, public policy in healthcare & health management are categorized and ranked differently.
I wonder what are the differences in study and job placements?

I am to be interviewed in this program..

Anyone know my chances for a semi-late application? SOPHAS won't send mine out until 02/11/09, when the priority deadline was 02/01/09 (they say it's rolling admission on the website though)... hopefully this won't affect my chances too badly 😕 Sounds like some folks are already getting acceptances.

I'm still waiting on all my schools, except for 1. :scared:

Well, I got my first rejection today, from the UNC PhD Epi program (via postal). I'm really bummed because it was my top choice. 🙁 I guess it was a bit of a long shot since I don't have a Master's already. But at least I got into my 2nd choice (UW Epi MS). 🙄

I'm sorry to hear your unfortunate news. Because you have received a decision, I thought I might ask a few questions.

When did you submit your application?

When was your application considered complete (meaning that all transcripts, test scores and recommendations were received)?

In addition to receiving your decision by mail, was your online portal updated?

I submitted my application on December 29, and it was considered complete on December 31. My portal was "Last Updated" on December 31 after the department and graduate school marked my additional information received; therefore, I can only guess that no further action on my application (except maybe internal review) has taken place.

I look forward to any information you might provide that could shed light on my situation. I wish you the best on your other applications and in making a final decision.

Don't know but we may be in the same boat 🙁. Even though SOPHAS shipped off my applications on 1/28, BU held my application at the door because I was still missing one of my LORs. That LOR wasn't sent off by SOPHAS until 2/4. On Friday 2/6, I got two consecutive emails from the grad coordinator at BU: the first saying that they were still missing an LOR, and another saying that my application was complete and was being forwarded to Committee. Today I got another email from the same grad coordinator saying they expect to receive my "missing" LOR during the next mailing from SOPHAS. UUUggghhhhh!!!! I give up at this point. 👎 :bang:

When did you submit your application?
November 17th.

When was your application considered complete (meaning that all transcripts, test scores and recommendations were received)?
Well, I don't see an official date of completion, but I did ask the admissions coordinator to hold my application until my second set of GRE scores had been received. They would have received those around the second week of January. Everything else had arrived long before then.

In addition to receiving your decision by mail, was your online portal updated?
There is no decision posted, but the "last updated" date has changed to 2/6.

On a related note, for my UNC HBHE MPH application status, it still says the department hasn't received my transcripts and hasn't been updated since December 20. This is despite contacting the admissions coordinator in early January and verifying that my transcripts had indeed been received and was told my status should be updated by January 15. Not sure what's up with that. 😴

Yeah, probably internal review.

No problem. Thanks for the well wishes. Best wishes to you, too! 🙂

I'm in the same boat as Kurly- docs were sent in to UNC HBHE MPH program some time ago although complete application not submitted until late January. It is now showing that the grad school has rec'd all transcripts but the dept isn't showing receipt of any, though I know they're there. Hopefully we'll hear soon!

Hey - congrats on Yale. I also applied to Yale for HPM and havent heard back. Did you have an interview?

Yes, I interviewed with a Yale alumn and heard about 3 weeks after the interview

Just got accepted to unc-chapel hill epi yesterday. I am so happy this is my first choice...still waiting to hear about funding. Good luck to everyone!

I take it back. Let me in, U Dub! Thanks 👍

Just received my acceptance to Emory! I applied to the Career MPH program with a concentration in prevention science. It's half online, half on-campus in Atlanta. Notification was posted on OPUS -- I've been checking it obsessively. Anyone else?

Still waiting on Hopkins (MPH general) and GW (global health).

FYI my stats: 1300s GRE, much better verbal than quantitative, 3 years work experience in health, 1 year international experience.

I've gotten into UNC (just found out today!), U of M, VCU, and GW-all for health management & policy. Still waiting on Columbia--does anybody know if they conduct interviews for HMPs?

Where else have you applied? What is your top choice?

I'm hoping I get into GW because I like their HIV/AIDS Studies graduate certificate. However, a partnership with the CDC through Emory is also enticing - I was accepted there last month. What does anyone know or think about this?

I really don't know what my top choice is- a lot of it will depend on which schools (if any) I can get some funding from. I applied to a lot of different schools / programs because I wanted to keep my options open - UNC (PhD), Harvard (DSc), BU (DSc and MPH), UMass (MS with an option to continue on to a PhD), Yale (MPH), Columbia (MPH), GWU (MPH), Emory (MSPH). I applied all in epidemiology or global epidemiology where the option was available.

I actually heard back that I got into GWU today (by email). I am interested in international governmental organizations so I think that being in DC would be a good choice.

I went to Emory as an undergraduate and am also not sure about staying at the same place for graduate school. But I in general love Emory and think Rollins has a really really great program and great internship opportunities. The CDC really is right next to the public health school. I'm not sure if it's looked down upon in academia to go to the same school as an undergraduate and graduate...

For those of you who got into UNC did you hear by mail or email?

I got an e-mail today notifying me that I was accepted into the MPH program in Epidemiology and the graduate certificate in HIV/AIDS Studies at George Washington University. I'm supposed to get a official acceptance packet by mail in the next few days. I'm very excited! =D

found out I got accepted to Johns Hopkins MHS today on the application website!

re: harvard, no word yet, but i tried checking about half an hour after your post and it appears the application status website has been down since then (it usually is not).

kulalala, congrats on hopkins! mind telling us when you applied?

Has anybody heard back from University of Minnesota regarding acceptance/rejection to the MHA program?
