Fall 2009 Applications!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted to UMich International Health this week!

I've been really excited by my acceptances so far, and it looks like I'm in the happy position of having a lot of options. I was wondering if anyone has any additional info/resources about which of these programs is best for global health, especially bioethics and global health. (sorry if redundant from another post!). It looks like USNWR rankings don't necessarily apply to departments, global health in particular, and I'm also not sure how specializations within the schools or degree type (MPH/MHS/MS) might affect quality and reputation. Anything would be helpful! Thank you!

Acceptances:
Hopkins, MHS, International Health, Social & Behavioral Interventions
UNC, MPH, Health Behavior & Health Education
UCLA, MPH, Community Health Sciences
Berkeley, MPH, Health & Social Behavior/Global Health
Tulane, MPH, International Health and Development
Emory, MPH, Global Health, Community Health and Development

Still waiting to hear back:
Harvard, MS2, Global Health and Population
Columbia, MPH, Global Health
U of Washington, MPH, Global Health

(In case interested in stats: 3.6 GPA, 1460 GRE, 1 yr Int'l Volunteer Experience, 2.5 years non-profit work experience somewhat related to int'l health)

Has anyone heard any kind of confirmation or anything from U Illinois at Chicago? I've gotten some kind of notice from every school about my app being complete or if there was stuff missing, but I haven't head a thing from them, and its been over a month.

I applied to UIC and received an e-mail stating they received my application. I e-mailed the MPH cordinator in the epi department and asked them when the admissions committee plans on making admission decisions. She replied saying that all admissions decisions will be made by March 15th and we should have something in writing from them by April 15th at the latest.

Do you know anyone who has recently graduated from UIC with a MPH? I don't know much about their MPH program and was curious to hear someone's opinion on the UIC SPH...

I've been accepted to Michigan's MHA program! I received an email on Tuesday.

Did anyone apply to Tulane for a MPH? I have been accepted into the epi program and was curious if anyone else plans on attending Tulane this Fall semester.

Oh, good God! You mean we'll have to wait until April???!! I am applying to CHS and not epi, but I bet it's the same deal on my end too.

I got a "your application was received" e-mail from UIC on Feb 13. I don't expect to actually get accepted, though, what with their abysmal 34.7% acceptance rate (lower than Harvard!!!).

UIC seems to be so good at keeping their whole SPH under wraps and maintaining their mystique. 🙄 Everyone keeps asking what UIC is like on this board and yet no one seems to know.

I live in Taiwan, and I just got admitted to the MS program in epi from UIC by postal mail. (They sent out on 2/6.)
Maybe MPH is more competitive?
I'm pretty surprised, because they send me the "your application was received" e-mail on 1/28.........really fast...

I also need some suggestions about the schools.

admitted:
UMich MPH epi
Emory MPH epi
UMinn MPH epi
BU MPH epi
Upitt MPH epi
UIC MS epi

Which one would be the best one?
Also, did anyone hear from Harvard, JHU, Berkeley, UCLA or Columbia (epi) so far?
Thanks!🙂

They also said that applications were currently under review so I took it the earlier they receive your application the faster you might hear back from them.

honeysuckle-
Where did you find that their acceptance rate was 34.7%? I never thought it would be that low.

Hey mootwoot,
When did you hear from Hopkins for the MHS? I've heard that UNC is the best when it comes to Health Behavior and Health Education. I've heard great things about all of the schools really.

Hi Publichealthqs,

I haven't gotten a letter yet but I saw on another thread that someone checked the application website. I did the same and there was a link to the decision. Good luck and thanks for the info about UNC!

I applied to Tulane for a MPH and I'm about 90% sure I'll be attending in the Fall. They have a specific program that I want and after visiting the school I think it is the best fit for me.

Congrats on the acceptance. I'm about 80-90% sure I will be at Tulane this fall too. I'm going down to visit the school during their open house next month.

I also e-submitted to SOPHAS on 27 Jan but till now it hasn't been mailed to Tulane. Could you please tell me how long after e-submission, your application was mailed to Tulane and the expected time for Tulane to make a decision. Thank you so much

I e-submitted my application on 12/1 and it was mailed to Tulane on 12/17. I received an e-mail and packet in the mail on 1/30/09 informing me of my acceptance.

I never received an e-mail letting me know that my application had been received. I e-mailed the MPH coordinator to ask if my application had been received and she informed me that once the epi department receives an application it will be reviewed that week and we would receive an acceptance/rejection letter within 2 weeks.

Great to hear about your acceptances. I got an admit to Emory and still waiting to hear from JHU, Yale, Harvard. Did you apply to Harvard and JHU for MPH and did you hear from them? I am from Sri Lanka.

hi guys does anyone know the salary range when working with an MPH.

The payscale varies between 40K and 90K according to payscale.com. I'm sure it also depends on how long you work in a certain job also:

http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Degree=Master_of_Public_Health_(MPH)/Salary

I currently work at a federal public health agency in Atlanta and the only people I know making 90K have a MPH and either a MD or PHD. Most entry level MPH positions make 40-50K in Atlanta at least. I know the payscale various depending on what city you are located in for any federal government position.

Congrats on the acceptance. I'm about 80-90% sure I will be at Tulane this fall too. I'm going down to visit the school during their open house next month.

I'm flying down from NYC to see the open house next month. My mother is meeting me there (flying from Tampa). I really like Tulane. I love my job and want to stay local but if I'm going to go away I think Tulane's my pick. We will see how the open house goes... seems great!

I have applied NYU GMPH( Global public health) program. And I am fortunate to receive the offer with finanicial aid award. I am dreaming to study in NYU.

I am from China, I would like to know more friends who have received the offer letter.

My applied track is : health policy and management

You may contact me via MSN: [email protected]

I've been accepted to Michigan's MHA program! I received an email on Tuesday.
Congrats! I was accepted by UM HPM a little over a week ago. Wondering if you'd heard anything regarding scholarships from them?

Hi, just got acceptance into UCLA's Community Health Sciences program. Has anyone applied and heard back from UW's Community-Oriented Public Health Practice Program or UCB's Health Policy and Management program? Thanks!

From Kancha's post "UW or JHU" it looks as though the UW COPHP program made their first round of calls offering spots in the program earlier this week. That small group of folks has until 2/28 to decide and then I suspect they'll make another round of offers good for one week, continuing this until all 12-16 spots are filled. That program was a bit of a stretch in terms of my interests/not quite a good fit so I'm unsurprised to not hear back. Good luck to you!

Just as an update...
I just spoke with an admissions at Columbia and all decisions will be updated/sent out on March 10th...

Congrats! I was accepted by UM HPM a little over a week ago. Wondering if you'd heard anything regarding scholarships from them?

Yes,

I didn't get any scholarship, but I'm happy to be accepted. My EFC was zero so hopefully they can give me some sort of financial aid package

i am applying from Nigeria . . . accepted by Yale (MPH Social & Behavioral Sciences) can anyone give me clues on how to apply for student loans or any other financing options.

Also has anyone heard from harvard?

Heard 2/28 by email that I was accepted to UW's COPHP program. I know it's a small and unique program, but does anyone have any opinions about it? For me, it's between UW, Berkeley, and UCLA. Cost is def an issue, and as a CA resident, one of the UCs would be a lot cheaper than UW... Advice?

Waiguoren - if you get any info, I'd be interested in hearing it too. I'm deciding between UCLA and Berkeley as well. I really liked UW's program, but I've tried to live without sun before and it doesn't really work for me. 🙂

Wow Waiguoren those were the schools I've been considering too and I totally feel you about the out of state tuition costs. I guess you have to decide which program appeals to your learning style better and which would be best for your career in the end. I've heard back from UCLA and got accepted but have not heard from UW COPHP so maybe I didn't get it. 🙁

has anyone heard about Berkeley's Health Policy and Management program yet?

for those of you that applied to UMich, how long after submission were you notified of anything?

i haven't heard anything. getting nervous!

Received a phone call for a 1/2 off tuition merit award from UMich, but have not been accepted there yet.. I guess they do their financial aid and admittances separately or something

If it's a merit award, those aren't usually awarded through financial aid... it's usually a a departmental decision. Sounds to me like they did things in the wrong order and that you are probably accepted and they failed to tell you. I received a similar merit tuition reduction award when I was accepted to Michigan 2 years ago, but I was officially accepted first...I would check into it if I were you.

Hi guys, I'm new to this SDN thing- wish I would have known there was a public health section to this site before.

I've noticed there's a lack of info/posts about Brown School of Public Health on this forum. What do you guys know about the school? It's very small (<30 students/class), and I know it's not ranked, so I'm just curious if and what anyone has heard?

I was accepted there a few weeks ago with a merit scholarship. I applied to the social/behavioral divisions at all the other schools to which I applied....Brown doesn't have specific tracks, but they seem to offer some freedom to students in choosing their curriculum. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding the benefit to creating your own program vs. following a structured track?

Right now I'm choosing between Yale SBS program and Brown (still waiting on Columbia), and any advice would be greatly appreciated!😀

waiting on scholarships...

waiting on a fellowship decision...

still waiting on uwash...

yet i think i know where i will go.

Funny...I'm in a very similar situation. I have been accepted to many schools and so far, I have it narrowed down to Yale and Brown...and am still waiting to hear from Columbia and Harvard.

Anyway, Brown is a relatively new program (it's accredited) and I've heard great things:
1. Small class sizes, which allow you to really get to know faculty
2. TONS of opportunities to do research
3. There is an internship requirement, which gives you solid work experience
3. Lots of assistantships are available. Even if you don't receive one your first semester, it is pretty likely that you'll get one eventually...which makes it very affordable
4. The faculty and staff are more than helpful. From personal experience thus far, whenever I have emailed them with questions...they have immediately replied and gave me lengthy, detailed answered
5. Brown is a beautiful campus and in a great location/city
6. There is a lot of flexibility within your MPH personal concentration, so you may take classes specific to your needs and goals...including classes in the medical school and within the graduate university at large. This is particularly helpful if you have an established direction and/or area of interest. I hear that the advisors are very helpful in directing you through creating your own program too. For me, this is perfect...because my interests overlap between social/behavioral health and health policy. Creating my own curriculum allows me the freedom to fully pursue both areas.
7. Students who have graduated from their program seem to be very successful post-MPH.

Hope that helps!

Nimesis, when did you hear from harvard? I have applied to the same program and have yet to hear anything.
I am curious what their methods are for reviewing applications and sending out acceptances. Based on past years, it seems as though lots of acceptances were given at the beginning and lots of rejections followed. I've now seen numerous SHDH acceptances at HSPH.
We'll see...

I submitted my application to SOPHAS on 11/21 and I heard back from Harvard on 2/20.

Hi all!
Have applied to UNC, Umass and LSHTM for masters in epidemiology. Has anyone heard from these schools? I sent out my applications in early January for the US schools and early February for LSHTM. Thanks.

For those who have applied to Columbia...

When I log onto my application and select the "Application Data" link...under my Primary Program of Interest and Secondary Program of Interest, it is now blank (rather than listing the programs I applied to).
The Sociomedical Research Track (in SMS) was my first choice and Health Policy was my second.
However, it is now blank and when I select the drop down menu, the choices are "Health Policy and Management: Columbia on the Job" and "Health Policy and Management: Executive MPH..."

Is anyone else seeing something similar??

I'm guessing this means that either my application has been reviewed or somehow this information was deleted (which I hope isn't the case!).

I'm getting this as well, although I similarly applied for Health Policy and Management. Don't really know what it means. Guess we'll all find out tomorrow...

Hey I also applied to these schools- have heard from UNC but not LSHTM or UMass (was kind of surprised that it's taking them so long). What program did you apply to?

Columbia decisions are now available on the main application page as of 12am today (link is on the bottom)!

I would have never noticed that until you brought it up, but I just logged in to my account and saw the same thing, and those are def not the programs I applied to (Global Health and PopFam - Refugee program). There is no way i will be able to sleep tonight if decisions are coming down tomorrow!
