Fall 2010 Acceptances!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did. No response yet - sent 1/20 (late, i know, but before the deadline!)

It seems like no one applied to the NYU program...I'm surprised because I would have thought it would be a desireable program.

ps. I also applied at the last second to NYU but still before deadline and have not heard yet

I seem to have applied to some of the less popular programs, but I'm ok with that. I had my reasons. I picked NYU Steinhardt because their public health department is shared with their food studies department, and I wanted to be able to take some of those classes while going for MPH - Nutrition.

I applied for NYU's MPA program in Health Management in the Wagner School and I haven't heard from them either. However, I've already made my decision so now I'm just in it for the ride haha.

Man, I have to admit that I'm a little peeved that I haven't heard from UNC yet.

I got my app in on December 13th. Two and a half months later and no decision yet?

Just got an email acceptance from Berkeley into the Environmental Health Sciences MPH program!

Stats: 3.75 GPA from ivy, 680V700Q GRE
Ecosystem science and biogeochem background, honors thesis research

Stats: 3.79 GPA (bio major), 2 different undergrad research, 590 GMAT 6 on writing, 4 years EMS with recent cert in ALS, a lot of leadership activities through TKE

Accepted;

Columbia (MPH with health care mgmt concentration)
Penn State (MHA - master of health admin)

Waiting;
NYU (MPH)

Got a no this week from Columbia and Yale.

Anyone apply to Arizona?

Another lurker here- I've found a ton of good information from this site, and I've had some questions of my own, so I decided to make an account.

Like some others, I am waiting (impatiently) to hear from Harvard. I only applied to 2 other places, so after hearing from Harvard, I can make a decision.

Stats:
3.92 GPA
560 V, 730 Q, 5.5 W

Accepted:
Yale (EHS)
BU (EHS)

Waiting:
Harvard (S.M. EH)

Rejected:
None... yet.

Good luck to everyone else waiting to hear from other schools!

I applied to Steinhardt too. I submitted the application on 1/5. Haven't heard anything. I called them a few weeks ago and they told me it takes about 12 weeks to hear anything.

Same boat here, wondering what's taking so long. This is my top choice program, too :scared:

Quick question - according to the HBHE home page, there's an "Applicant Info Day" on March 22nd. Do you suppose it is geared more for those of us in the current application cycle, or for those who may be interested in applying for admission next year?

Hey,

I got in to UNC for HBHE and going to the Applicant Info Day on March 22nd. I think it is open to prospective applicants, admitted applicants and people interested in applying next year. I know that admitted applicants are able to talk with two professors by appointment (this is what I was told when I signed up) and believe that prospective applicants are able to signed up to speak with one professor.

Hope this helps

Ya know, after talking to you before, UniqueStylez, and seeing some other chatter here on these boards I'm wondering if UNC considers the people who have work experience and those who don't in like 2 different applicant pools. Someone posted that that seemed to be the case for the MHA program as well.

PHin2010, are you right from undergrad or coming from work experience?

another lurker...
First off, congrats to all of you who've been accepted into your choice schools! From the looks of it, this is indeed a smart/experienced bunch!

I've asked some questions on this forum before, but I'm getting to be really antsy and well like most of you refreshing my email every 2 minutes, so i figure it's time to post...

stats:
recent grad, 3.1 gpa, 760math and 680verbal. public health undergrad, with some related internships.

accepted- UCLA (health services)
waitlisted - Columbia (health policy and management)
waiting - UNC, Yale, Berkeley, UMich (also hpm)

Any tips for getting accepted into Columbia off the waitlist?! I'd love to hear some suggestions.
Also...anyone interview for UNC's MPH program? I'd appreciate an idea of questions and how to prep for it.
Thanks!

I don't believe they hold interviews. I was under the impression that the info day in November was for prospective students and the one in March was for admitted students.

Anyone apply to Arizona?

Gubbin, I applied to UofA for the DrPH. It's my top choice - I'm really interested in migration and CBPR, so Arizona is a perfect fit for me. I'm waiting patiently (well, not really :uhno:) - I think we're expected to hear by next week?

I just got into Arizona for Epi. They want me to send them transcripts again in order to be officially accepted. Since Arizona isn't a top choice for me, I wonder if I should do it? But if I don't officially send in transcripts, I wouldn't know what financial aid I could have got....oh the decisions.

Stylez, thanks for the info, that's really helpful!

Deem, I'm coming from work experience. Ooo, interesting idea about there possibly being two pools...

Well, your situation might debunk my theory but hey...it was just a theory (i'm coming right form undergrad so I figured maybe that is where the wait came from).

In (all HPM - Global Health Track):
Columbia
Emory [their acceptance letter was extraordinarly well written - made me feel special 🙂 ]

Interview:
UMich (good chance i might actually bail out of this one...)

Waiting:
Yale [plz show me some luv 🙁 ]
BU
NYU's Wagner School
Brown

Rejection:
John Hopkins

Congrats to all those who've been accepted and all the best to those who have yet to hear from their top choice schools!

Accepted UW-Madison MS in Population Health with Epi Concentration.

Applied here because I did not think I had the stats to get into a big name program.

3.02 GPA (Statistics and Econ), 790q/620v/4.5, 1 year of epi related research.

I applied for the same program, Varekai1018. You heard that they are sending decisions next week?? Did you apply to other DrPH programs?

I think you should have cast your nest wide. your gpa may be low, but then you were majoring in stats & econ. these are not your typical liberal arts majors, ya know. plus, your GRE scores are pretty solid (to me at least). and you have experience! anyway i don't know much about UW-madison, but i really hope it's a 'fit' for you.

Phone call (voicemail, actually) yesterday from UW (MS in Environmental Health). They're flying me out for an interview in March!! 😍

Do you think this is just a "is this guy too weird?" kind of interview and a courting/give the kid a chance to experience the department kind of thing? Or do you think this interview is a serious weed-out tool?

I agree...my stats were lower than yours and I was accepted to two top ten programs so far...PH loves experience!

I have a friend that had lower than a 3.0 get into Columbia and is going there now. I hope you really want that program because with a solid essay and recs im sure you could have gotten into a better school.

Uh, no! They really want you!

They have no incentive to spend any money on someone they're unsure about when they can spend it on someone else that they're interested in- particularly since many of these departments are facing budget cuts. If they wanted to find out if you were weird, they could call you up on the phone or make you pay your way out to them.

Congrats! You're accepted already.

Hi All:

I have been trolling this site for weeks - maybe months - and finally started calling my schools to find any news. Heard from University of Washington I was accepted to the MPH Social and Behavioral Health department.

Stats: 3.78 top tier public university BA in Psych
-Experience teaching public heath there and two years experience at local NGO doing health ed (although mostly support and a little research)
- Research experience on thesis
- 600V/780Q/5 W

Accepted: UW
Waiting to hear: Harvard, Michigan, BU - all departments are social/behavioral

Great to finally see others who applied to Arizona on here! I didn't apply anywhere else - I went down there in November, and absolutely fell in love with the program after meeting with faculty (also from other schools/depts for the PhD "minor") and students. And I figure with my research interests, I really should have access to the border...especially if going the DrPH over PhD route.

Did you apply to other programs? Did you apply to HPM or MCH?

The wait is killing me...but in the email I received from the CPH to let me know that my application was complete, they wrote that they expect to make admissions decisions in the first week of March. So we should hear soon!

Feel free to PM me about anything, if you'd like!

I didn't think they did interviews for the MPH program either and haven't heard too much about it, but I have an interview coming up soon actually. hmm...

I have a lower GPA (2.7) and GRE than yours, but got into Emory. I have 2 years of HIV related experience and other volunteer activities. You should have applied widely coz' you never know what the school is looking for until you tried. Good Luck!

Anyone (who submitted an app before Jan 5) still not heard from Columbia?

More specifically, any news from Columbia's Urbanism and Built Environment Track? Sitting here, waiting, wishing...

you call them? I think I applied for that track.

There are absolutely still a few of us waiting.

It seems a few hours after posting this I got my email from Arizona 😛

The "2-step processes" is a little... unique.

For those applying in future years, it looks like this:
The University of Arizona employs a two step admissions process. We are notifying you that you have made it through the first step, which was to be selected for admission. The second step is for the College of Public Health to officially recommend you to the University of Arizona Graduate College for admission and for the Graduate College to approve our recommendation...

I'm going to contact them to make sure they received my transcript before I send in the attached document. Arizona was my #3 school, so I'm really excited to ship-out!

Penn State (MHA) is actually the same exact thing. I had to submit 2 transcrips and the MHA dpt has to submit a recommendation to the graduate school for your acceptance. So you might get two letters saying that you got in. First into the program and then from the grad school it self

I am also still waiting. Anyone know when to expect a decision from that track? I am losing my mind waiting 👎

Just called Columbia in a panic since I hadn't head from them either. They said they haven't sent out all decisions yet, and will be finished sending everything out by mid-March.

So we still have time!

Does anyone know when Harvard is supposed to send things out? It sounds like one or two people have heard but that's about it. (I'm specifically intereted in Epi, but really, what is taking them so long??? :bang:)

oh thanks for calling because I was about to give in and call them. It just sucks to see other tracks getting decisions and other tracks have their applicants pulling their hair out!

*trying to stay optimistic and patient*

i called the school and was told that decisions are usually emailed on Fridays sometime at the end February -March. So we should hear pretty soon!

Waitlisted at Emory.... never saw that coming. pretty much thought that was a given. but goes to show that you really never know what these admissions people are looking for.

FINALLY. An official response from a school. Although it means more waiting anyways.

Still Waiting for:
UC Berkeley (Health Behavior, re-routed from Nutrition),
Tufts (MS Nutrition/MPH),
NYU Steinhardt (MPH Nutrition),
GWU (Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Waitlisted:
Emory (Global Epi, email from Global Health Dept though first choice was Nutrition...no word from Nutrition so maybe that's a no-go?)

Rejected:
UNC (Nutrition) found out after I emailed the department.

It didn't seem like acceptances were going out based on any track-specific schedule (at least on the full-time MPH level). I think they're just doing it based on when they've received applications and such. I know that they didn't have my application complete until the day of the final deadline (irony of ironies, the only thing they were missing was my undergraduate transcript. From Columbia.) so I'm assuming that's why I'm still waiting

Thanks!

So I'd suggest a few things

1. Call Columbia and ask them if you had a weakness in your application
2. Get an additional recommendation that addresses this weakness (if there) and potentially why this is not a weakness or why you're such an excellent candidate
3. Write a follow up cover letter explaining why Columbia is your first choice, updating on things that you've done since you submitted, addressing the weakness if you have one, and what you can contribute to the Columbia community

Hope this helps and best of luck!
