Any difference (significant) between 2nd and 3rd editions? I understand both are quite outdated anyway... but, curious. Huge price difference....

The most recent edition is from 2001 I believe. I wouldn't recommend going older than that. It's still useful though for many of the topics.

Big difference between the two editions. The book was almost completely redone with new chapter authors. It is not just a retread of the 2nd edition. Over 60 new or revised chapters were added and many previous chapters were combined or deleted so the the text would not "lose its portability." I took that straight from the Preface to the 3rd edition. I own both and they are quite different. I would expect that a new edition is due. It has been a while.

I think it's in the works. My division chief wrote a chapter in the 4th ed. Says it's "in press".

Is this just for CA-1 prep? Why not just use Miller?

Fo sho. Just that from everything I read on here, Faust seems to be short and concise. I don't have time for Miller right now... my schedule is really busy (and front-loaded). Also, program provides Miller... not Faust. 2nd edition was like a couple bucks.. but, as mentioned before, given all the changes between the 2nd and 3rd editions... not worth the purchase.

Faust isn't good for primary reading. As an intern, focus more on the core medicine/surgery topics that you encounter. Later in the year (after step 3, etc...) once intern year slows down and things become a bit easier, start going through either baby Miller or M&M.

+1 for baby miller. Many others on this forum have suggested it. I read it before CA-1, really helped out. I continue to read it again during CA-1 as well.

MandM is about 4 years old now, rumored to be a new edition soon. My program did not give us MandM because of this. Just gave us Barash. I read the required readings out of Barash, but if I need to review a topic quickly, I choose baby miller.

MG handbook is good reading for an intern. Reading MG handbook several times, along with a strong internal medicine/ICU/cards foundation, will allow you to obtain a passing or near-passing score on your first in-training exam (March of intern year?). 😀 Also, the MG handbook is an excellent OR companion during residency and beyond, thus familiarizing yourself with the layout and content is advantageous. 👍

Faust 3rd ed is 570 dense pages, Baby Miller 4th is 478. Faust makes nice work of lots of topics in 1-3 pages but I think it's absolutely not a better starting place than Baby Miller.
