I'm an undergrad at University of Michigan with a 3.73 gpa and 31 MCAT (9v, 12p, 10b). I have plenty of lab experiences and volunteering experiences including a national fellowship award. I'm a resident of Maryland and thinking of applying to University of Maryland medical school early decision. What are my chances? Thanks.
 
Your chances are excellent, good GPA/MCAT/VOLUNTEERING/RESEARCH/AWARD. You definetly have a good shot, what year are you by the way?
 
I hope that this does not insult you. Your chances are slim to none. now days a 3.7 wont cut it, specially from a public school. I think you should buckle down and retake the MCAT in August. Also consider taking post-Bach courses if your still in school.

Make sure you research the school on its early decision policies thouroughly. Some schools make it almost impossible to get in, while others are the opposite. If you don't get in, your application will be pretty late and it could decrease your chances of getting into the school of your preference.
 
From my experience people with low confidence and jack786 seems to suffer from this disorder will get killed in medical school. He needs to toughen up and realize that 3.7 and 31 MCAT does not allow you to write your own ticket.

To answer your question I am not kidding.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++•••••I just wanted to throw in here that the idea that a 3.7 from a public school is worth less than a 3.7 from a private school is completely ridiculous. I hate...I really, really hate to say anything nice about Michigan, :wink: , but it's a helluva school, and I'd be turning cartwheels if I had a 3.7 from there. Just my humble opinion.

hey, may i ask why maryland ED? with your stats from a really good undergrad school, you could maybe think about applying to some top tier schools just for the hell of it (whats an extra 200-400 bucks on amcas in the long run of 100K in loan debt?). not to say that Maryland (like all med schools) is perfectly sufficient, but you sound pretty competitive and maybe could have some considerable options.

My lord...•••••I have been thinking for the past couple of nights about the comments made by scplnhnd. And I am reconsidering the whole idea of applying to medical school. I feel that he is right that I have a low self esteem and I might serious trouble in med school. I am now considering going to Nursing school not only because I don?t have the scores to go into medical school but I truly respect the patient nurse interaction. I wanted to thank you guys for your support and the help provided by SDN.

Tennessee has millions of people living in the state and it is home to 4 medical schools. As shocking as it might sound there are several thousand premeds that study in Tennessee and perhaps there are more than just one persons on this forum from Tennessee.

By the way, just because you want to be a doctor that does not mean that everyone else must be a doctor.

I don't belive that doctors are any better people than nurses.

And just because Meharry won?t accept you that doesn?t mean all Tennesseans are evil and manipulative.

I've got a question for you SCLPNHND.

I see that you are from Nashville. Are you on a NIH Fellowship at Vanderbilt?

If you are I was wondering if you knew a friend of mine there working on his PhD in the microbiology/immunology department.

I'm a student at Maryland medical right now, and I'm glad that you are sure that you want to come here, but I would have to recommend that you not apply early decision either. According to my pre-med advisor (not according to anything I've heard from the Maryland adcom), students should never apply early decision because if a med school is going to accept you early decision, they would have accepted you regular decision too if you would have applied early enough. Applying EDP doesn't give you any special advantages from an applicant standpoint. If they don't accept you or wait-list you from EDP, then you are at a disadvantage when it comes to applying to all other schools. You also don't really know where you want to go to medical school until you've had a chance to interview at other schools. Some private schools offer so much financial aid that their costs become comparable to Maryland as a public school, and if you really like their school, then you might be more inclined to go there. Your numbers are competetive for Maryland though, but like most things in life, it's not a sure thing, so be sure to apply to a wide range of schools ( a few reach schools and a few "safety" schools).
