Even though there are many subspecialty fellowships, some of them are organ system specific( such as GI path, GU path, Breast path ...) and they other Surgical Pathology Fellowship. If one wants to pursue his career in non-academic private(group) practice, would it be better to do GI path fellowship or Surgi-Path fellowship ? Some programs offer specific GI, GU etc.. fellowships while others have only Surgical pathology fellowship.

Of course, Dermpath, Cytopath, Hemepath would make one very
strong candidate in Job market but beside this, would Gen-Surge Path or GI path fellowship will increase one's chance in Job market ?

Any specialty training will only help you in the job market. GI path is especially good, since so much of what you see in private practice is GI.

A general surg path fellowship will help too, if nothing else it gives you time to get your boards taken and passed and concentrate on finding a job. Since a general surgical path fellowship is not board certified there is not another board to study for.

Heme, cyto and derm are still the ones in most demand.

how competative is a hemepath fellowship. I've heard about dermpath and cyto being tough, is this also true for heme?

Neither cyto or heme is nearly as tough as derm. Heme is probably similar to cyto. Both are tough to get at strong institutions. Easier at undesirable locations.

Best thing to do train in residency at a program with a strong heme fellowship if that is what you want to do. You may not get a fellowship where you do your residency, but the head of the heme department will have good ties to all the other hemepath fellowship directors. Fellowships in path are really about who you know and networking almost more than anything else.

So basically a surg path fellowship is a year of fortification of what one has already learned in residency?

I depends on the program what the your actual responsiblities would be, but basically yes it is a year where you can concentrate on any part or all parts of surgical path.

At MCV the surgical path fellows take attending call and sign out with the junior residents. But, their choice of rotations is flexable. You could rotate through every specialty (we do specialty sign-out) or you could concentrate on particular areas.
