to the med students: it would be great if you could share some of your thoughts on these two questions:

1. The best thing about being a physician?

2. The worst thing about being a physician?

1. not a physician yet. dunno

2. not a physician yet. dunno.

I've only had one real day being a physician but:

1. It's a great job. There are so many doctors out there who complain it's not worth it anymore because of the high insurances, lawsuits, HMO's etc. But every time I go get pizza or go to the grocery store or get fast food, I look at the people working there for minimum wage, many working two jobs at 60 hours a week in less than ideal work conditions just to survive. Everytime I wonder if I did the right thing by going to med school, I just think of someone workin at a factory.

2. You have to be a doctor because people expect you to be one! One of the family members of a patient I saw for the first time the other day asked me a question that I couldn't answer and their response was "Well, you're the doctor! You should know." They thought I knew everything about the patient when I only looked over the chart for 20 minutes. Luckily the attending showed up before I could go on like a bumbling intern. 🙂

So that's about it, very first day of being a doctor and nurses are asking what to do and to change orders, etc and I'm still not comfortable with it yet. (Luckily this month I can use a cop out since I'm on a sub-speciality service i.e. "I'm sorry, that's something the primary should take care of.") 🙂
