Twenty years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes and since then I have been dreaming about being a physician. I applied in 1995 and 1996 without ever receiving an interview. I pretty much gave up hope and never thought I would ever achieve that dream. I went into a PhD program in hopes that I could find my passion in research. Having almost completed my degree, I realized that academic medicine was the life I was meant to live. Getting into medical school was the only hurdle I had to surpass. For six years I dreamt the day would come where just one school would tell me I was one of the students they wanted to matriculate. Today was that day that I dreamed so hard and so long for. My path has brought me to this point and I am so fortunate to finally achieve only what I have dreamt possible. Today I was asked to become a medical student at the University of Vermont and for this I am grateful.
I want all those without interviews and acceptances to know that someone out here feels for you. I have tired of reading posts about countless acceptances and such, and I have felt the pain of 57 rejections in my life - the tears in my eyes feel your pain. I know my story may not comfort you, but know that someone feels your pain and has been through it countless times. Never give up your dream for one day it will come true.
