FlexMed 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it true that one interviewer is very friendly/asks questions about your activities and interests while the other one grills you about your plan?

That's what I was expecting but I didn't feel that was the case. They were both really friendly and trying to get to know me as a person.

Just wondering... are any of you guys who applied/got invites juniors?

If you're a guy, definitely go suit and tie. Girls, dress formal and appropriate, you know the drill. For the tour, the girls were offered the chance to change into more comfortable clothing. At no point did we have to carry items around so don't worry too much about bags.

The day started the night before. Those who get invited to interview also get invited to stay with a student host the night before. It's a great way to see where students live and get a head start on asking questions about being a med student and Mount Sinai. At 8:30 everyone meets in the school, not far from the dorms if you stayed with a student. There were 12 students for my interview day, almost all of us were engineering majors. There was breakfast and the deans of the programs gave a short overview. Everyone is given a folder with information and a personalized schedule with who you are interviewing with and when. Current med students are invited to eat breakfast with you so you have more opportunities to hear their experiences. Both interviews are about thirty minutes one on one. They are with MDs, deans, or PhDs at the school. Then there are two students who act as your tour guides. They lead you to lunch in the student lounge and then around the various buildings. That pretty much concludes the day!

FlyingMooCow, did they let girls go back to the dorms to change? I thought that would be the case, since you said that you didn't have to carry anything around, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

They have a closet where you can leave your stuff in the admissions office! Some people brought their suitcases and it was totally fine. You could go back if you needed to during downtime.

Only those with sophomore status (i.e., two more years at their institution) are allowed to apply to FlexMed. This is in line with FlexMed's philosophy of allowing students to have ample time for unencumbered academic pursuit.

Ahh got it, that makes sense.

IIRC third year students who are in five year undergrad programs are eligible. Although I'm not sure if thats sophomore or jr.

I am interviewing Thursday the 24th of April. Anybody else around interviewing then?
I'm also from the West coast... anyone else??

There were a few people who flew in from the west coast in my group! Kudos to west coasters for making the long trip!

MEEEE, it'll also be my birthday so I expect a present 😀. Just kidding. But yeah I'll see you there unless some freak accident prevents me from getting there.
I'm from the bay area!

Have all the interviews been sent out? I never heard back one way or the other.

I've been told that this week's the last week of interviews. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken?

One of my classmates just withdrew post interview. She said she's scoring 38+ on practice AAMCs and wants to apply the normal way. I'm still holding on before resigning myself to studying.

Smart girl

3 more weeks! Is everyone done with their spring semesters?
still got another 5 weeks till summer over here...quarter system. did they specify that it would be June 2nd, like it says online and on the application? or just sometime during the first week of June...

Future Flexmed applicant here. Would you guys mind sharing what the application was like (in terms of essay questions and how many recommendations they ask for) and what the interview process was like?

Wolverine,
The application required three LoRs, one from high school, one from college faculty, and one from whomever you desire. There were three essays: a description about an activity or experience you're passionate about, how flexmed would affect your education plan, and how your education plan would make you a better doctor. It was a pretty standard online application which required transcripts and SAT scores. The interview process by my understanding was a traditional one. 150 people get invited to interview and stay overnight with a student. There are two one on one half hour interviews and a tour of the school. Hope this helps!

Are any of you science majors? I been thinking about applying to FlexMed next year, but it's hard to think of how it would change my education plan.

FlexMed would allow you to take more advanced science courses without having to worry about GPA, do more research, etc.

Oh I actually be never thought of it that way! Also, for the recommendation required from a college faculty, I was considering asking a professor that has seen me develop in the class and knows my interests outside the classroom. Is it okay to ask a professor of a course that was not a part of your major for a recommendation?

I had recommendations from my high school language teacher, boss, and PI (none from a professor!) You'll be fine!

Is there a list of similar early assurance programs either sophomores or juniors can apply to?

I hate waiting! I hope that somehow all of us get in!

I bet half of the kids drowning in all the summer MCAT threads would give anything to be in the running for this.
Not necessarily. It's definitely not a program for everyone, and not everyone would want to attend Sinai.

If you guys don't get in are you planning to take the new or old MCAT? or both?

Agreed. That's why I said half. I actually know of a girl who dropped because she wants to apply everywhere the normal way. Are you applying this upcoming MD cycle?

@inycepoo (now banned) also did the same according to previous posts here.

I'm applying next cycle. Interviewed myself for this program for the experience of interviewing, but no desire to go to Sinai.

Did anyone send any new stuff to the admissions office following the interview? Like spring grades or other recent accomplishments?

No, I did not send any new materials post interview.

Anyone want to take a stab at interpreting this statement (see below) made during interview, it would be greatly appreciated.

"I just want to tell you that even if this program doesn't work out, I can still picture you sitting in this chair in your future."

Don't overthink it. Interviewers don't make the final decision so it's probably just words of encouragement.

Yeah that doesn't mean anything.

Do we know when next week we hear back? Only a couple days away.
