FlexMed 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha seems like it. Maybe they just didn't want to do interviews this year because of corona

I emailed them for feedback and they said nearly all applicants were very strong and would do really well at their school but “hard decisions had to be made,” so I’m wondering what ended up being a decisive factor.

Personally I’m a clean 4.0 with all science classes done before sophomore year and I work as a research assistant at my in state medical school and got rejected. Like I know I would be average for the traditional cycle but I am still wondering what their decisive factor was.

Wow a rejection after acing everything. Perfect SAT, perfect GPA, perfect Flex, wow. I'm hardly surprised Flexmed's response. I realize that their indoctrination was rather inevitable therefore I don't begrudge them their ignorance: however I will never take them seriously simply because their philosophy is so elementary. It's hard to agree with a philosophy built upon false pretense and promises unfilled. Their ideas aren't original, their philosophy isn't proven and their character is a fabrication of ideological imcompetence. Fear and ignorance control their opinions like most peoples and this only exacerbates humanitys tragic condition. But don't worry about what I think, I'm just a crazy invalid who can't keep his thoughts to himself

let me know what they say because I worked on this application with several advisers and they all said I had a really good chance. I wish I could have at least experienced the interview process.

mad cuz bad

What the heck did you just frickin’ say about me, you little whiner? I’ll have you know I am at the top of my class in terms of GPA, and I’ve been involved in numerous research projects with my lab, and I have over 300 confirmed volunteering hours.

Lol collegestudent23 it’s okay jeez

Do you think this is a joke? Mock me as much as you'd like, this does not mean a thing. Firstly, you don't "get" me. I have an extraordinary mind not only as said by me, but also by far more intelligent people than me. I have a friend who's currently studying engineering physics who says I'm one of the few people that can keep up with him in a complicated conversation. Secondly, to your surprise, yes I do have friends, I met my best friend 7 years ago and we're like brothers since, he's aware that I'm a brainiac and sometimes calls me a walking encyclopedia, and I don't see why here I have to dumb down myself for the sake of attracting the affection of "internet people". I am who I am and you know nothing about me, all you can do is make assumptions based on a few internet comments. I can't stop you doing it, but I can choose to either take it seriosly or just entertain myself. And to end with - “The thing about smart people is that they seem like crazy people to dumb people ” - Stephen Hawking

I am:
-4.0 gpa student
-former diamond 2 league of legends player
-went professional in two separate games
-have SINGLE-HANDEDLY devised my own mathematical theorems (I would never publish them though, the simple mass wouldn't understand lmfao, everyone is too math illiterate).
-Work out every day to the peak of physical perfection which allows my mental state to remain sharp.

And after all this, rejection. I will grind harder than ever to rise from this failure.

How could this be? I had a 4.0, deadlift 1000 pounds, current Challenger on League of Legends, Global elite on CS:GO, published 25 papers, had 1000 hours of volunteering, and cured swine flu, SARS, and currently developing a vaccine for the rona. Sucks man.

Perhaps they believed you’re a better fit at Harvard Med. Good luck!

Damn I wonder what they were looking for. I had solid recs, solid flex, and established extracurriculars to back everything up

Same I’m just disappointed but what can we do. I hope they can put the stat up for what they chose

Also got an interview! ~3.8 College, 4.0 HS. Decent clinical, research, and leadership activities. Had a mix of STEM and non-STEM interests.

I was involved in 2019 FlexMed cycle, and I have been mentoring students in FlexMed 2020. They have not scheduled interviews yet, because they are still figuring things out.

For those who have been going through the virtual interview process, how do you all feel?

Hey for those taking the CASPer, will they email the dates/times we are supposed to take it? I can't find Icahn on the list...

I can't find Icahn on the list either. I have emailed them to see what's going on, and I am sure they will clarify the instructions on Monday

This Autumn, I will be a freshman at a good biomedical engineering program and I want to enter the medical field after my UG in BME. I really want to contribute something to the medical community and I want it to be meaningful. Do any of you have any suggestions for a student like myself who is dying to do something useful during the virus? I don't want to look back at my 2020 experience and think how a prospective doctor didn't care enough about the community....

I was able to find Icahn on the list. In my interview, admissions mentioned you need to select 2020-2021 application cycle to find Icahn.

I think it's totally fine to take a break on extracurriculars during the pandemic. People are going through a lot and if a med school cares about empathy, they should be considerate of the stressful circumstances people may be in. If you want to help out though, make sure you are doing it safely. There are remote volunteering opportunities out there you can check out to help others in need. Bottom line is that you can help the community in many ways, it doesn't have be directly medicine-related.

This forum is so quiet... is the wait killing anyone else or is it just me?
You're not alone, the wait is also killing me but I'm just trying to think about it as little as possible so I can go on with my life and won't be on edge every second oop

Yup—I totally agree. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they will let us know tomorrow

I was just accepted as well! I went to a university ranked outside the top 150 on US News. I was also pretty hardcore traditional premed, but spun my passions enough for me to stand out. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!
