All right guys....Florida A&M has a probation on their accreditation status as of now....any suggestions if I should apply there or not or should I keep it as a back up school. I know probation is probably bad news...but this is not a question that I can ask adcoms directly 🙄....so any suggestions on that one? Thanks in advance.....

Are you currently a FAMU student? Do you have a 3.8 or higher? Do you have an AA only? If you answered no to the above questions you will probably not get in. This is from my experience applying there in the past and from living in Tally and getting the scoop. They are a 0-6 school so therefore they only accept transfers when one of their students doesn't make the cut....leaving only 20 or so spots open for transfers every year. Which makes it VERY competitive. They also prefer only AA degree holders (rumors I've heard from people who asked the adcom why they got denied). So apply if you want.... They also have VERY slow turn around time on apps, I've heard of people never getting a rejection letter before...people getting rejection letters and then getting accepted etc. Disorganization city. Also when I got rejected they refused to allow me to setup a time to talk about my application.

As for the whole probation thing: I seriously doubt the state of Florida board of education is going to let them lose their accreditation. That would bring a serious blow to a school which is having problems with their image already.

Just my $.02

hmmmmmmmmmmmm. i really didn't like the fact that you "have" to have pharmacy experience. that sucks. 👎

I applied 2 yrs ago and didn't even get a rejection letter (they said it must have gotten lost in the mail but I was receiving housing info the whole time). I applied for this year (fall'07 entry) and got my rejection letter 3 weeks after submission. But, they tried to take my financial aid! I sent the FAFSA to them in case I got accepted and even though I wasn't even enrolled they were still sending me aid papers and letters to sign. I had to call the FL Dept. of Education to let them know and make sure that they didn't interfere with the money that was supposed to go to my current university. I called the financial aid counselor that handled my last name and he never answered and his mailbox was full. Finally a week later I was able to leave a message and he called me back like a month later.

But I can't say that I'm not still thinking about applying even though I've been accepted and still going on interviews.

ah yes i too had the financial aid problems, but i got it straightened out once i had a famu login. i was able to cancel my aid through the website on there. are you applying to uf jax?

u can have a 3.5 GPA and a 95 pcat and still be rejected by this crappy school. they take their OWN students even if they have a 2.5 GPA. i know students who had a 40 pcat and decide to transfer there and got in after they have been a student a year or two.

Yes I am. I'm assuming you are too. I'm going to PM you.

Don't even bother because when I apply, I actually called the school and verify every little detail. I make sure they receive everything and everything was fine. They even send me a paper say that my file is complete. They told me to wait for their response and I have not heard anything from them for a long time. Every time I called they just tell me to wait. Suddenly 1 weeks before the deadline, they send me another paper saying that I did not have my transcripts on the file. I even try to overnight send it and they just send me a paper saying that my file was not complete therefore they dismissed my application. You know on their application procedure, they want you to have the transcript include on the package. If they got the paper work, that mean they got the transcript. To think they actually misplace the transcript is really something else. Since someone on here say that they accept their own students but at least told me ahead of time so I don't mind. Even after I submit the application, I would willing to give them the money. But doing something stupid like that I think they deserve to be on probation.

Ouch...not too good reviews at all...thats the second case of misplaced transcripts...I went to their website it could do with a little organization...but thanks on the heads up....I wonder if the ACPE also asks students on their input while deciding the status......

According to ACPE rules, a school can only be on academic probation for two years, and then they have to decide either to give it full accreditation or drop its accreditation.

After a site visit from the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education in early November, Florida A&M University's College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science is now in compliance with all 30 accreditation standards.

CPPS is expected to receive full accreditation for the next six years.

Prior to the site visit, the college was out of compliance with 19 of the 30 standards made by the ACPE.

In an email, Henry Lewis, dean of CPPS said, "I want to send the highest praises to the college's faculty, staff and students for rising to the challenge of addressing all of the criteria to meet the new ACPE accreditation standards."

The site visit team report will be made to the full ACPE board of directors at their meeting on Jan. 11, 2008 in Tampa.

The site team consisted of three council members from the ACPE.

They met with the college's executive council, curriculum committee, assessment committee, strategic planning committee, experiential program coordinators, division directors, students and faculty.

The team toured all of the college's facilities, including the library, animal care facility, teaching laboratories, classrooms, offices, student services space and conference facilities.

In addition, the entire team met with University President James H. Ammons and Interim Provost Barbara Barnes.

Hany Edwards, a second year pharmacy candidate from Boca Raton said, "being a pharmacy student representative at the accreditation site visit was very gratifying."

Edwards said that he is confident that the college of pharmacy will receive full accreditation status at the January 2008 ACPE meeting.

In addition to the college now being in compliance with ACPE standards, graduates from the class of 2006 had a 100 percent passing rate on the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Licensing Examination (NABPLEX).

The NABPLEX is an exam given to students, who have completed an ACPE doctor of pharmacy program and want to receive a license to practice as a doctor of pharmacy.

The college has set the scoring standard for all pharmacy programs across the country.

First of all I would not call a pharmacy school that had 100% passage rate of their Naplex exam for the 2007 graduates crappy. I currently go the school and the probation status is in the process of being lifted the council was just here 2 weeks ago and basically approved everything and all the changes that were mad.

Also it is a 6 year program so WHY do people on this board constantly bash the school when you apply as a transfer and don't get in. The only spots left for transfers are the one left for people in the 6 year program that messed up. Anyone can apply to be FAMU's six year program out of high school ANYONE doesn't matter what race, sex, or financial status you are it is open to anyone that wants to come. But the problem is a lot of people don't want to go to the school for those 2 pre-pharmacy years they only want to be at FAMU if they're in the pharmacy school. So don't get mad when you see that the school is accepting most of its "OWN" students as you put it because anyone could have been in the "OWN" if they wanted too. Its a six year program.

Hmm... Very well said... LoL 🙂

😱I just read the article again in my previous post and i saw that "the college was out of compliance with 19 of the 30 standards made by the ACPE"

😱😱

That has to be scarry to the current students that were there during this "incident". wow. That is a lot!

Yea it was but thankfully were back on track due now that we have good leadership meaning no more interim presdent of the whole school who was horrible or of the college of pharmacy. But the students never flustered and the our passage rates of NAPLEX never suffered thankfully.

Thanks on the info on that one. And the point of the 6 year school does make sense....its just that the accredition status was a little blip on the record...now that that too is sorted out i guess....

So I've heard a lot of horrible things about FAMU, maybe some good, but applied anyway. I'm a high school senior and got accepted to their 6 year program.

I'm having a really hard time deciding on whether or not I should attend. It's the only 6 year program in Florida and I'm staying here because of Bright Futures so out of state isn't even an option.

Any input on whether or not I should attend their 6 year program? I've been accepted to UCF already [and still waiting on my dream school UF] and have considered just going there for undergrad and taking the traditional route, but then I read posts of people stressing over getting accepted to pharmacy school and then I start to wonder if I'd regret giving up FAMU's 6 year program.

What it comes down to is I'm not sure if I'd be happy there from what I've heard.

Help? I'm very torn... =\

I think you should go the traditional route since FAMU's future existence is in question. Plus I have a bunch of friends who go there and they say that if they could do it all over again they'd go somewhere else and apply to pharm school because FAMU is extremely disorganized and uncaring.

I'm a pre-pharm student at UF and I love it. They are very organized and I don't EVER have to worry about my application being lost or anything of that matter. The classes are pretty hard but a good GPA is very possible. As long as you have that and a good PCAT score, you shouldn't have a tough time getting into a pharm school.

This seems odd since according to the NAPLEX website 2006 graduates had a dismal 83.06% pass rate. They were actually some of the lowest scores in the country. To find all school pass rates go to www.nabp.net then click on Exams then NAPLEX then school pass rates statistical analysis. I just find it odd that it was written as a 100% pass rate. Furthermore the test is the NAPLEX not the NAPBLEX, so I really question the validity of the source. I do hope they get their act together though and have accreditation renewed, it's a shame for any school to lose their accreditation. I worked with a past graduate and she said there were a lot of people in her class who cheated on tests and they many of them failed their NAPLEX. If this is true, I hope things really turn around for them.

I say go to Florida A&M. you can always transfer between pharmacy schools. You just have to apply to them. in the meanwhile while you are waiting you can already be in pharmacy school even though it is not your number 1 choice. Take what you can get for now. 😀 I would! Pharmacy school is pharmacy school !!!

I am currently a student at FSU and live in Tallahassee. FAMU is a joke. They are not organized AT ALL! The website has been dysfunctional for the past couple weeks but is finally now working. Everyday I called to ask about the problem and they just bounce me around and put me on a machine to leave a message or at a box that is full. I am applying there but I have read mostly bad things on this board about FAMU. Go search for the demographics and statistics of the entering classes for the college, you won't find them. It is clear that they accept their own students over transfers no matter how better qualified the other student is. Dealing with that university has been a pain.
