Florida Schools Application Thread (2008) part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone already started filling out their Federal Stafford Loan forms yet? I am thinking of getting this over with because, well, I have nothing else better to do. 😀

Relax; enjoy your summer. Find a place to live, get the limited amount of forms done, and do something fun. Goto Disney World, Busch Gardens, The Keys, travel to Europe. Enjoy the time you have left before you have to actually study.

Don't study now. It's not going to help you. You will have more than enough to study when school starts anyways. Enjoy the time you have left because there are few more prolonged vacations left in your life like this.

I been enjoying my last chance to do "nothing." I am a gamer so I been immersing myself into my PC, XBOX 360 and PS3 games. I also been golfing a lot and planning on helping out at my friend's/golf professional's Golf Summer Camp I really enjoy doing. I been also hanging out with my best friend regularly. All-in-all I been relaxing since I know it will never end come august. I am living at home so I don't have to worry about finding a place to live.

i called UF today, they said they accepted 25 students off the waitlist last week... they also said they had one withdrawal so expect one more person to get off of it this week. i asked the admissions lady how many people more to expect to get off, she said roughly 1-2 people a week should be withdrawing and that she roughly estimated 15 to 20 more getting of that list by the end of the summer.

i also called um and they said that movement has slowed down,... and that's all they said.

i heard a theory from some of the admissions people at usf (and only a theory) that the slow movement may be attributed to people rethinking attending there b/c of the state of the economy and the tuition may be more affordable than other schools students may have gained acceptance too... this is based on their thought that accepted students have been asking for extended deadlines after gaining acceptances to other schools

u kno what, im going to stop being so negative, im going to stop posting... let's just see how it goes in a month

UM just said that there was movement lately, but the next movement hasn't been decided, probably won't hear for at least a few more days. *sigh*

I don't think this is true. The trouble with the economy is more hurtful for the main undergraduate campus, with a limited number of seats, higher tuition rates, and limited educational facility-growth. USF has many other sources of funding that doesn't rely on state funding. I'm sure many accepted students chose to go elsewhere based on scholarships they got at other medical schools, but it looks like USF is the most generous public FL medical school with scholarships. My opinion is that many people just don't want to attend another school.

I think most of the UM movement this year that I've seen had been on wednesdays, I think usually every other wednesday or so. Just how I'd been keeping track.

I think so too. I think that people just want to stay closer to family, friends, and what they know. Its a familiarity issue and matter of support system.

I know someone who turned down Columbia University to stay at USF because her family was here. I know other people who turned down other schools that are more reputable by rankings even other Fl. schools that fit this bill for the same sort of reasons. I've met people at USF undergrad a few years ago that only applied to USF and those who applied elsewhere but with intention of not going unless it was USF just because they were nontrads whom had to make a joint decisiion since they had a spouse and in some cases kids to consider.

Hello

I know this doesn't have anything to do with this discussion but, I was wondering if anyone who is in medical school or already graduated could tell me what med school is like, because I am pre-med. I would just like to know about the work load, running time of classes, how the professors are, the clinical training, and other things that could better tell me what it is like in med school.

thank you

Well hopefully this does not mean that the waitlist will not start (or keep) moving like it has in the past.

Haha so trueeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!

I know of one person who was going to be putting in their withdrawal soon to go to UF, but I don't know if they've done it yet. I mentioned them the other day on here.

I know ankit99 is also waiting still as is sillymeMD and a few others. So hopefully it works out for you all.

has anyone taken the mcat more than once? how much higher were you able to raise your scores? anyone lower them?

2 years ago I got a 26 on the MCAT. Last July I retook the MCAT and I got a 32. You will find much better answers in the MCAT forum.

:scared:😕😳ok, so I can say it now. Just got the call from alma mater, UF. So Im stuck. any advice please??? Im between UF and USF, and I know so many of you have made decisions so are obviously biased, but I want to know anyways. Im a gator forever, but Im from Tampa. Anyone been in this situation or knows someone who was and can shed some light on the situation? I love gville, but dont know if maybe im ready for something new. I think im taking the peds/ family medicine route, but I dont really know. I think USF will help me decide, but for some residencies, I think UF will help me get there. Really in a bind, and have a time limit on making choices. Would really appreciate the help from this community. I see how well you have been helping everyone else along.....thanks in advance!

As you said UF can probably help you get into some more competitive residencies (peds) than can USF. Good luck on your decision.

If you're from Tampa and have family there, maybe close to home would be nice. Also, city life versus Gainesville...you've done G-ville for 4 years...you know what it's like. Go with your gut though and realize that most people change direction in terms of specialty once in. Also, what was your impression of each school during interviews? Did anything really kick you in the shins?

I was in the same position as you are now.

Family Medicine, and pretty much primary care in general, is not that competitive right now in terms of residencies. I think both schools have programs where they help with funding if committing to that path.

The price between the two schools is right along the same lines. Both match very well, and going to either will help you in getting into very reputable residency programs. The main difference you should consider here is your living situation, learning style, and student environment. If you live at home in Tampa and go to USF COM, it'll drop your annual expenses by about 10K, which helps a lot. UF has tremendous opportunities to get into research, which helps in getting into residency programs that require it, like radiation oncology - that is where they have the edge. After looking at both, it looks like USF provides much more extensive clinical training. The student environment at both places are tremendous - USF, however, provides students with a little bit more opportunity for collaborative studying, but the students at UF really work together very well.

This is more of a personal preference than anything else. You cannot go wrong here, but pick the one that will make you happiest.

Okay Miami folks there is only 2 months until orientation! For all of you attending Miami campus next year, if you have a facebook PM me and I'll add you. Time to meet some of my future colleagues. 🙂

all great advice! i really appreicate it....so many things to consider! be in touch! best of luck to u all!

UM just said that there was movement lately, but the next movement hasn't been decided, probably won't hear for at least a few more days. *sigh*

Yeah I feel you. I'm wait listed at UF, USF and both UM campuses so I am hopeful but, every day that goes by without a call is just getting painful. *le sigh*

Congrats to everyone that has gotten in though.

Of course I am biased being a USF alum, but USF will "help get you there" as well. That should not be a major factor in your decision making if you are only considering USF and UF.

Personally had I gotten into UF I probably would have stayed here. As you said UF can probably help you get into some more competitive residencies (peds) than can USF. Good luck on your decision.

Tho I've only been away from USF for a year, the last I knew they were in the top 5 in NIH money (3rd if I remember correctly) for peds research. Both schools will get you any residency if you work hard. Residency is not a part of the decision.

A lot of people I know stuck with USF because they had been going there for their undergrad. They had gotten to know so many people at USF and they just felt comfortable being in a familiar place.

It seems that UF poses the same analogy to your situation. Remember, Tampa isn't that far away from Gainesville. I think you'd find success wherever you go, but I'm sure it would be nice to stay in touch with all the friends and people you've met over these past four years.

If I may offer some advice, I was just like you this time last year. I am a Florida Gator, but I decided to come to USF medical school after I got into both. It was a tough decision to make, but I can say that I am very happy to be here.

First off, being close to family was a key thing for me. When you start medical school, you will be working harder than ever before and you need your family near you to help you through. It is an emotional rollercoaster, and it is important to have your family to keep you grounded. Secondly, when I compared USF to UF, their match lists were almost the same, especially for pediatrics and internal medicine. This year alone, we matched 9 in Emergency Medicine and several in radiation oncology, anesthesiology, and orthopedics. Thirdly, I was ready for a change. I went to UF for 4 years and absolutely loved it, but I was ready for a more grown up atmosphere of Tampa which is a wonderful city to go to medical school in. My classmates and I go to the beach frequently, enjoy Channelside, go on cruises, etc. My fourth reason for coming here would have to be my classmates. USF is a very relaxed campus, and with medical school being stressful enough, I didn't want the pressure of being super competitive with my classmates. Even now, as I study for the Shelf exams, people in my class are sending their study guides to one another. We help each other out here.

I hope this helps you to make a decision. I know it isn't an easy one, but in the end, this is your decision to make and your path to walk. No one else can make it for you. Best of luck and congratulations to all! 🙂

Well I called USF this afternoon and they told me things were still going kinda slow, but that some replies were trickling in still (one spot opened up today), but they are still confident that more should be coming, but when is still the question. Hopefully some more spots open up soon🙂

I hope so, too! Congrats to all of you who've gotten accepted and good luck to those of you waiting! :luck:

Keep in mind that while it is stressful, med school is stressful everywhere. I have a couple of friends who went from USF to UF for med and they like UF a lot and said their classmates are severely helpful.

Classmates will vary from year to year. Who will be helpful and who will not be will vary as well. Don't use the age old excuse that UF is more competitive because the students are very friendly from what I've been told. I've also heard of stories where USF people were uber gunners and unhelpful. It varies from class to class and person to person. Those things are subjective and can go either way from one school to another.

Secondly, I'd say go with your gut with the school that is more comfortable in terms of being ok with the atmosphere surrounding you i.e. location of small town vs. city, where the greatest support system is, and where you feel the curricula and way of doing things works better for you. A lot of people rather not worry about clinicals until years 3 and 4, while others prefer to have that LCE experience early on. Think about these kind of things.

No seriously!!!! The couple of friends I have at UF said their classmates are really helpful when they have questions and not as arrogant or gunnerish as people make UF out to be. I've also had family friends that have gone there and spoken very highly of the school. Despite the drama that happened earlier this year with the admissions fiasco, I think that UF is a great school and people need to stop trying to make the boards a UF bashing ground by making it out to be the big bad wolf.

I used to have these misperceptions before I had friends who went there but since they've gone there and told me how much they were happy with their decision i've come to believe that those UF med students I met at med forums were not just faking it as at least one of the 2 friends I have there lets me know when she's stressed if we have talked and what not but overall she's made it clear she has no regrets and that she'd choose UF in a heartbeat all over again.

I think the point is that all schools are stressful, there will be gunners everywhere and helpful peope everywhere. We are in this together and make the best of our situation because ultimately there is no utopia. So people need to start giving less subjective measures as a way of determining which school is better.

Nah I know what you meant. Just the word "severely" is usually used to describe something negative.

we've really started to get into the swing of things here at FSU...let's just say it doesn't look like there's going to be much time for SDN at least until anatomy is over...but I got to cut through thoracic vertebral lamina with a bone saw yesterday...freaking sweet!

anyone know of any movement on the miami-main campus waitlist lately?

anyone know of any movement on the miami-main campus waitlist lately?

UM just said that there was movement lately, but the next movement hasn't been decided, probably won't hear for at least a few more days. *sigh*

boyfriend called at the beginning of the week, they told him that they hadn't decided on the next movement yet and again, still won't hear for a few more days *another sigh*

sad thing is that I'm obsessed with checking this site constantly for updates and he's the one on the waitlists, lol

Hey guys,

i just got the call from usf! its a big relief! i was told to hear by the end of May, so technically they are only a week behind.. good luck to all of you guys waiting!😀

Where were you on the waiting list if you don't mind me asking?

I'm not Ankit, but I know he was high tier waitlisted as was my friend. The odd thing was he was told end of May and she was told June, but she got off weeks before him. So I don't know if they have an ordered rank within each tier but I do know that high tier means top 1/3 and mid tier next 1/3 and bottom 1/3 = low tier. So my assumption is they are still moving along the top 1/3.
