Florida Schools Application Thread (2009) Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From US News Fall 2007 Admissions Data:

FSU:

1505 Applied; 365 Interviewed; 227 Accepted; 120 Enrolled

USF:

2649 Applied; 419 Interviewed; 196 Accepted; 120 Enrolled

UF:

2550 Applied; 346 Interviewed; 208 Accepted; 132 Enrolled

Miami:

4357 Applied; 666 Interviewed; 358 Accepted; 176 Enrolled

hope I am not digging up an old thread (didnt read the rest of the posts past this) but when they say "4357 applied" does that mean completed secondaries? or just put the school in their AMCAS application?

Those applications are applications that have been "verified" by AMCAS and applied to that program. The applicant did not necessarily complete the secondary process at that program.

Question about FSU?

I had an interview at FSU about a month ago and I was put on the "under consideration" list. Def on edge about it. About how many students does FSU accept off the "under consideration" list? I submitted a letter of intent about two weeks ago. How much does this help my chances do you think?

:hello: Hi DrZeke.

Do you have any sort of winter vacation coming up?
Going home 🙂. Haven't been home since April. Site seeing, eating delicious food, working out, skiing, skating, going to visit my university...too exciting. I can't wait 🙂

You?

Ah yes. Real winter. I've heard about that 😉 Never experienced it myself.

No special plans I guess. Just staying home, visiting friends, etc.

Don't worry, 90% of my trip will be spent indoors. 🙂

At my interview at UMMSM, they told us that this years numbers will be approximately ~6000 apps, ~500 interviews, and ~400 acceptances (including eventually off the waitlist). At least that is what I remember, I didn't write them down, so someone can correct me if I am wrong.

i remember it being ~80% as well, but I don't remember how they factored in the boca campus/people with multiple acceptances.

Bump!!

Me and my friend are having this debate and I was wondering if you can help.... Miami uses PBL correct? What are the advantage and disadvantage to this?

does anyone know about the post interview alternate/waitlist at UM miami? i know they said that a lot of people come off the waitlist, but are there a lot on to begin with?

also, does the waitlist move before may?

i loved UM but i hate waiting.. aarrg

I think there are around ~300 people on it, don't remember where i got that number from but just remembered it. As for waitlist movement, I remember last year they sporadically accepted 1 or 2. I think some movement happened in late march last year, then the may 1. You can look for the miami 2012 class page, or florida applications part 2, and the posts/dates of people saying they were accepted.

Accepted to FSU and FIU!!!! 😀 Yeah instate looovveee

:luck::luck::luck::luck: everyone!

hey iheartsharks,

I interviewed at FIU on 10/27 and just got an email today (12/16), and interviewed at FSU on 12/1 and got an email on 12/9. When did you interview? Hopefully you'll hear back soon, FIU is a little slow on account of their being a new school and all 🙂 good luck! :luck:

Thanks. I interviewed at FIU on 10/24 so I have a feeling I got put in the Final Pool to be reviewed in February. I also interviewed at FSU on 12/5 they said I should here back today or tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and crazy stressed about it. Congrats to you on both of your acceptances. Are either of them in your top choices? If not what is your top choice school?

sent you a pm 🙂

anyone know if UF has a meeting before next semester when they accept some of the people they've put on hold? thanks

Haha I don't know what's going on with FL schools. I'm a FL resident at UF undergrad and have ONLY interviewed at UF.

Here is a list. Maybe you can all tell me what to expect in terms of possible interviews...

USF : complete 10/24 no news as of today...
Miami: complete 10/7 no news as of today...
UCF: complete 9/19 no news as of today...
FIU: complete...as of i'm not sure but had to be september....no news
UF : interviewed 12/12, put on hold

sigh...it's really worrying me. Should I expect interview invites from any of these schools? (not hopeful about UCF. I talked to some of the faculty and they're actually getting pissed about the fact that the med-school is basically 'buying' off students)

I mean...I'll be happy just to interview at USF and Miami...but not getting any news is a little disconcerting

I would be cautiously optimistic. UF has a very fast turnaround for interviews compared to the other Florida schools. I received my UF interview in August a few weeks after being complete, and it took me 2 months after being complete at Miami to receive an interview (3.8 35S). I know someone who applied to UF and USF at the same time with a 4.0 36 and he's just interviewd/been accepted to UF without a peep yet from USF or UCF (complete around the same time you were). The schools interview through next year so I would say at the very least you're probably a good candidate for an interview from USF/FIU.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I know a dude on my interview date who had a 4.0 / 36. Did he interview 12/12 and is he a Chem Engineering student? For comparison purposes...I"m applying with around a 3.44 coming out of Chemistry with a 38 MCAT. Do you think USF would bother inviting me for an interview? I know they are pretty tough on the GPA factor. How about Miami? I don't know if MD apps is working right now - which is why i'm just mentioning the major stats...

yea that's my friend. Your MCAT is great, and in my opinion you stand a great shot at any Florida school. There are still 3-4 months of interviews left, and you didn't apply very early, so I think you just need to wait it out. Continue to send update letters to Florida, hopefully you'll hear some good news shortly.

Your GPA won't keep you from getting a USF interview, especially with a 38 MCAT.

I think we interviewed the same day. I'm still waiting from FIU. I suspect my grades haven't wowed them!

MDApplicants is not working. Can you specify your ECs on here. I couldn't open your link to the profile and none of the others much less the main page for the website are opening.

ECs:

Volunteering:

member of the Lions Club since 2003...during high school I collected old and used glasses for donation to third world populations and inner city populations of Orlando. I built a website for them, before I left for Gainesville. Then during my college years, I commuted back to Orlando to volunteer at the Lions Club vision clinics ~ roughly 5 - 6 times a semester. This involved guiding paperwork from people of very low socio-economic status. I would sit in with the ophthalmologist as he examined them, and then gave them prescriptions. I would also help in transportation of glasses from a warehouse back to this location, etc. Very cool experience.

I did some work for a homeless shelter in Gainesville, although this was not as long-term and less significant in terms of time.

Research: 4 semester of research in a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory...no publications, but I did do a poster presentation at the Florida Annual Meeting and Exposition. Also worked on synthesizing a compound for a lab at the med-school which was later shown to enhance the activity of ACE2 inhibitors...but like I said - my role was basically synthesis.

Shadowing : Roughly a year of shadowing an internist at a Jacksonville hospital. Also spent a few days shadowing a gastroenterologist. I wrote extensively about this in my PS.

Other: Been playing electric guitar since 2004...started a sort of recreational instrumental orchestra here in Gainesville. We did this for roughly a year, meeting weekly and playing instrumental songs, sometimes composing. Then everybody moved or graduated 🙁. I also taught guitar lessons to beginners for a while - but this was not through the University or anything. It was a sort of unofficial side project of mine.

Was a member of college bowl for about a year. Helped in hosting of high school competitions - basically involved reading questions to the teams. (This is harder than you think! especially when you have to pronounce all sorts of stuff.)

Work: Been teaching Kaplan classes for all MCAT sections since January 2008, so it's been roughly a year. I also mentioned some of my excellency ratings on applications.

The thing is though - I wasn't even this detailed for some of the activities on AMCAS. I was pretty brief, and in hindsight, it was a big mistake.

And I suppose my ECs aren't impressive. I was hoping at the outset though, that they would be sufficient...and satisfy the main requirements of what adcoms look for.

She was waitlisted because of this trick question UF likes to ask you. They ask you what you'd do if you couldn't be a doctor and if you don't relate back to medicine it hurts you. So that's what she has told me and it happened to a friend to. There might have been other factors but that was def. one of them.

I said I'd be a musician and I still got in... I don't really think it has to relate to medicine if you have some other area that you are really passionate about

You know, I never got that question, interestingly.

I was told that the 'only correct answer' to "What would you do if don't get in this year?" is "Reapply", or at any rate, "reapply" had better be somewhere in your answer.

I would just like to say very publicly on SDN that there's no way in heck I would have reapplied to medical school any time soon if I hadn't gotten in this cycle. I mean, I guess I might have *considered* reapplying in 5 years or something. But seriously, for me not to get in *anywhere* this cycle would have basically told me that I had some very serious flaw in my application somewhere of which I was totally unaware. At any rate, I don't know what I could have done in the course of a year that would have significantly strengthened my application. So I would have to just give up and say "I did what I could."

If I hadn't gotten in, I think I would have just said "No hard feelings" to all of the medical schools and then looked onward. I don't have endless $$ to spend on several rounds of applications.

So if directly asked, I would NOT have said "reapply".

Happy holidays to my fellow Floridian med school applicants!

And Merry Christmas to those who celebrate Christmas!! 😀😀

😍 for Florida! 😍

Yeah, I think we can all get excited about the New Year 🙂 Good opportunity to get dressed up ;-) and eat and drink fancy things. 😀

Hey all,

I just made a very difficult decision and decided to decline the offer of acceptance from FIU. Though very flattered, I am nearly positive I do not want to continue living in the area (have now for 2 years, and it has been an experience!) I feel very guilty but at the same time, I know that this will open up a position at this wonderful school for someone who is absolutely sure they want to be there! So hopefully this will open up a spot for you 🙂

Cheers, and happy new year!

I understand where you are coming from. Miami is not my cup of tea either. So are you decided on FSU or still waiting for more options

I withdrew from FIU after I got accepted to FSU. It had nothing to do with it being a new school, in fact there were some things about FIU that I prefered over many other schools. With respect to the location, I dont really know how to explain it. South Florida is a place where I would rather spend a few weeks on vacation over living there. Especially Miami... unless you have mucho $$, Miami is a difficult place to live in.

I absolutely agree 🙂

yeah I have a bro that lives there so I know what you are talking about. I've been there a few times myself and i understand those that say you love it or hate it or in some cases it grows on you. But most who are in med school at Miami Miller or Nova tell me they would rather not permanently live in S. Fl. If they live in a real city it would be up north somewhere.

Kaya12,

What about you? What were your reasons for not liking FIU? Just the area and Miami living or also partially it being a new school and what not?

Hey gujuDoc,

I very much liked the program at FIU. I had no reservations about going to a new school, and this def didn't play into my decision very much at all. I think the staff/faculty at FIU are doing a wonderful job and there are things I liked about FIU that I didn't see in established schools I have visited (strong and actual ties to the community, etc).

This may seem strange, but yes the area is mostly the reason I do not see this school as a fit for me. I have been working in Miami for two years now, and feel that I have a pretty good idea this is not where I want to be for the next 4 years. Aside from a feeling of hostility (mostly propagated by the drivers) there is a sort of unrest here that is hard to explain. It is a difficult place to survive if you do not make that much $, or are living off student loans with no other source of help (aka you can't live on Brickell or in the Gables). It seems like everyone is trying to take advantage.. (Especially when your car gets stolen, and you proceed to save and get a new car, which is then broken into on one occasion and the plates stolen right off it on another, all in front of your apartment!) If I could live in a bubble, or if I had family here, I would def stay. However, these things I do not have, and I am starting to feel a little jaded. It is best for me (and my normally easy-going midwestern personality) to go somewhere a little more chill at best. So, that is my rambling answer to your question. This is merely my own opinion, and I do hope I did not offend 🙂

Just saying hi to my fellow Floridians. Anyone starting school tomorrow? Or has school started today in some places?

UF starts tomorrow.

I just got an interview invite for FSU today, I had my secondary submitted since August, but respectfully declined. Hopefully one of you fellow Floridians can capitalize on this opportunity. 🙂

I'm heading to the NE for residency. 🙂

How's everyone doing? Happy Holidays!

Yo Florida boys and girls. I just starting catching up on this thread it's been awhile. I guess for those who don't want to stay down here I understand where you're coming from with the cost of living and all that. Miami is an expensive place and it's a bit weird. For me it's the atmosphere. While I like the diversity, I don't like that a lot of people come from different countries but don't try and learn English b/c there is such a large spanish population that is almost no need to learn it. That's the only thing that really irks me about South florida but i've been here 22 years so I guess I'm used to it.

I wouldn't mind staying in Florida but it doesn't matter to me, as long as the hospital i go to is large and can gimme some good exp. I did get to see Grady Memorial Hosp in Atlanta during my interviews I wouldn't mind heading to GA after medical school.

Ha! Yeah I remember we discussed this. I see that a lot of Miami kids end up going up north or out to the midwest i.e. Chicago or elsewhere out of state for residency. At least 2 of last year's Miami grads went to hospitals affiliated with different NY schools.

1 of them is from Miami originally so he might eventually come back. The other wanted a big city from the start and initially stayed in Fl. cuz she was married at that time and it was where she had the highest shot of getting in. Now that she's done and divorced though she's in NY. Several others who went there for med school initially wanted to go to the NE for med school but didn't cuz of cost so I imagine some of them will go up for residency as they've talked about places like NY, Boston, or Chicago.
I want to get out of here mostly because of the whole "jaded" thing. Due to the rudeness of the fantastic people of Miami, I find myself having way more evil thoughts and much more road rage than I can ever remember 🙂. I need to go somewhere where I'm taking a train/bus/metro for a while. Plus, I don't mind the cold...I grew up in it. The darkness might swallow me whole, but I guess I'll have to deal.

My big thing with Miami is that diversity isn't true diversity. You go to Chicago, LA, Boston, NY, Newark, etc. you will see India area, China town, Mini Italy, etc.

In Miami diversity only means diff. latin american groups (mostly cubano) and other carrib. islanders like the haitians, bahamians, and jamaicans. Its the only big city in FL. but it doesn't have the real diversity of the northern cities.

I loved when I was in chicago and being able to go down a whole street and nothing but indian restaurants and stores and knowing that if I go to different parts of the city I'd find the same for many different types of groups. I don't see that a lot in Miami. But that's just me.

I feel you on that. It does suck that to work in Miami you have to learn Spanish but to live here English isn't required. I am a nurse and actually have had patients talk crap to me b/c my spanish is less than great, and I'm like this is the USA!!! In Florida the official language is English lol

Dude, hang in there. We're in pretty much identical situations right now, and I'm hoping for the best as well. I have a 3.49 GPA, 41 MCAT coming out of Electrical Engineering at UF. I applied about half a month earlier than you did, and the only interview from in-state schools I've gotten so far was from UF(10/17, on hold). I applied to all the in-state schools, but haven't heard anything from any of them yet except UF and a couple days ago an email from FSU encouraging me to send in updates.

I think I have less research experience than you, and I don't have much volunteering experience, although I'm working on improving both right now. I've actually received a couple interview offers from OOS schools, so it really bugs me that the in-state schools aren't showing any love. I'm sending updates and getting a new rec letter right now(just sent in my FSU update yesterday), so hopefully it'll help. I guess you should probably send updates too, maybe they just want to know that you're truly interested?

How long does interview season last at FSU and USF? March?

I love you guys. Ugh, I TOTALLY agree.

I really wanted to learn Japanese but I have been diverting my attention to learning spanish first b/c of how much I'll need it down here. 👎

USF and Miami are big on service and clinical experiences.

Agreed. Substantial clinical experience is highly recommended. I guess if you really are interested in medicine, you'd want to see what's out there as far as different medical specialties on your own anyways.
