I emailed Dr. Hinckley last Thursday to ask. He said that they are currently trying to decide on the dates for the second look, and it will be announced when they do.

Cool, it would be nice to meet some of you in person.

is it wierd/ unusual to receive an interview invite from UF, but completely get the cold shoulder from both FSU and USF...??? I just dont get it.😕 Im in-state and I really am intersted in both of those schools, I went into this thinking I had no chance at UF but a fairly decent chance at the others. Now I only have one in-state interview.😳 ..why does my state despise me so?

Aren't you in Washington, DC? 😕

im in dc for undergrad, but I've lived in florida for all my life. I plan to come back for med school.

I know that last year 70 students applied and 15 got in. This year they are going to accept 15 again.

Wow. I see. Do you know how many have applied this year?

Good luck in the whole process.

Good luck!!!

What do you think is holding you back at this point?

Actually I just found out about the program about a week and a half ago. I am getting my application together to send it.

I have no idea. I know that the first year they had five out of 7 students get into USF COM after going through the program. One student got into a DO school and one student had a low GPA.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been invited to interview or has interviewed lately at Miami (either campus)...and knows if at this point they are interviewing for the waitlist?

Same here too....I cant get enough eyelashes to fall out or fountains to throw coins into!!

I'm hoping to get off the USF waitlist AND get an interview at EITHER Miami campus 😱

Has anyone gotten in off the FSU waitlist yet?

Hang in there everyone! I am wishing you all the best of luck!

Got a call from FSU and USF today for interviews!!! I was totally shocked😱 . Now I can breathe again🙄 ...to all those still waiting hang on to hope and good luck.:luck: :luck:

Congrats! 🙂

Do they only give out interviews on a monthly basis? When is the next time they make interview decisions?

Someone on here was saying that each commitee member is supposed to look through 10 apps a day but sometimes they don't all do that so its been going slower then usual.

I got my rejection email from UF today 🙁

I got my rejection email from UF today 🙁

I got mine a while back and it was a top choice for me with it being my alma mater. Oh well, whenever I make donations to UF, I'll specify that it can be used for anything, but the College of Medicine and Shands. 🙂

I wish they'd just send me the inevitable rejection and get it over with.🙄 😀

Knock it off or I'm gonna kick your butt in class tomorrow. That's right, you heard me. I'll turn the entire lab against you! You'll be the most hated TA EVAR! hehehehehe

Seriously, stay positive LTD. It's still early. You can start freaking when summer hits. Until then, SHUUUUUUSH! Your friends are going to strangle you. 🙄

😍 :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

I'm debating whether or not to go to USF's forum saturday. I have so much studying to do. >.<

BBALL: Congrats....what a great day!!!!

When's the interview for FSU?

Good luck!!

😍 Thanks for all the congrats and support!!

DReject: my FSU interview is next friday...Feb 9th!! Im truly excited. 😀

 By the way...I have noticed that UF and USF offer the option of staying with a student overnight (instead of spending $$$ on a hotel) when you come on your interview...has anyone done this/ know of anyone who has done this? How was it...good/bad experience? Did it shed any light or help beyond the interview day in your decision making process? I'm thinking about doing this, but I just want to know how it was for others thanks and good luck to all still waiting to hear. :luck: :luck:

I think im the only florida resident who didn't apply to FSU or UF.

I may be the only one that didnt apply to Miami...🙄 Seems like alot of people are looking to go there.

I think most FL schools are interviewing through March, which means that we have 6 or 7 more weeks to pray for invites.

FSU is filling up spots for Feb. 9. What about USF?

LOL, well it's nice to know that I'm not the only person who felt like taking my chances and being selective...hehe

Not the only one. TPRorgotutor didn't apply to Miami either if you look at his mdapps profile.

also, i've heard of several people applying to everywhere but UF bc of teh competitive nature of UF as being more competitive numerically speaking then the other schools.

I always forget gujuMD. Are you in med school? If so, I'm assuming you're at USF and if not, then where to?

ive been waiting and waiting, and i still want an interview from UF, im not giving up hope damn it

this was probably covered in my interview day, but I don't remember. Do you guys know if Miami has a clinical learning center like the other schools with exam rooms and standardized patients and all of that? And if so, when do students start practicing with them? Thanks so much.

miami has the best hospital of all the florida schools and the students at that school for SURE get much more clinical real life experience than any of the other schools, so i wouldnt worry about a clinical center at miami, in terms of patient contact interaction they are ahead of the rest IN THIS CATEGORY because of the extremely busy jackson hospital

I'm not arguing on the point of Jackson being one of the best real life experiences but I'd argue that USF also has an undoubtly good clinical training program and gives you the biggest diversity of different kinds of real life experiences with having affiliations at Tampa General (their premiere teaching hospital), Two VA Hospitals of which the one right across from the med school is the busiest VA in the country, All Children's Hospital and the Only Shriner's Hospital in Florida. Let's not forget that they have the ONLY Comprehensive Cancer Institute in Florida as well.

So I'd not go so far to say that you won't get awesome real life experience from USF.

Additionally, USF's preceptorship program often lets you get in there and actually start doing things from the get go rather then just oserving in years one and two.

I think Miami might be better for infectious diseases and maybe even for ER medicine even though TGH has a trauma 1 level unit, just cuz Jackson is one of the busiest hospitals in the country esp. for that kind of thing.

However, I think the diversity of clinical facilities through which you rotate at USF will give you a great deal of real life experience beyond that typical academic teaching hospital envt. of a place like UF or a top 10 school like Hopkins.

gujuMD, gujju, and me (gujudoc) are 3 different posters who all had the same idea of using our gujarati background from india to incorporate a username here on SDN.

I am personally applying for IMS programs right now. GujuMD is applying currently and don't remember the status of gujju.

I got my usernname idea from a girl who used a similar screename: guju and then the name of an object in her AIM screenname a long time ago. I kinda stole my idea from that cuz when I made my first post on SDN ages ago, I didn't think I was actually going to join the ranks of SDN addicts. 😉

From what I remember, Dr Hinkley said " We dont have the luxury of using standardized patients. We have so many real patients here that we have to treat, you practice on real ones." I think they said that you start this within the first few months of arriving once you learn basic techniques from your societies that they put you in.

Yeah that's the same deal with USF. Even though they have standardized patients, they have a lot more focus on getting out there with real patients more often then not. They didn't even have the standardized patient thing at USF until recently and most of the med students I know here have told me the real gist of where they learned was from going all over Tampa and working in real life settings getting experience taking histories.

In that respect, I think both Miami and USF are awesome and equal.

How do you think FAU Boca campus of Umami med school compares???

Miami has a standardized patient program, but it is not used too often, at least during first year. We had a practice physical exam session with standardized patients in mid january and that was the first time we used them. Most of the time you practice with real patients. There are plenty of them at jackson to go around. You start patient contact at about your fourth week of classes. As soon as you start learning the most basic skills (interviewing and taking history) you head over to jackson in groups by society and practice on people. Everyone is also paired with a preceptor which you attend four times per semester. You will be there the whole afternoon working in the office. This experience varies, but my preceptor in particular is awesome and gets me to do everything. As of now I have learned and performed almost every part of the complete physical and special exams (pap smear, venipuncture, injections, diagnostics, etc.). You'll love the clinicals at miami. Additionally we host a free clinic in the underserved little Havana area which students attend and pretty much run. Students do everything at the clinic and the attending physician that night helps guide the whole process.

I always joke with my UF friends and laugh, telling them that the only thing they'll ever see in the shands ER in gainesville is undergrads with alcohol poisoning or people who got bitten by snakes running around in the woods. In Miami, You'll see EVERYTHING. :meanie:

It's lots of fun.

This is very similar to what USF does. They start preceptorship in November or so from what my friends tell me. And they start learning how to take histories and stuff from the get go of preceptorship. Like with you, it depends on the preceptor in term of how much they let you do. I've met many of the physicians at USF and talked with others when setting up shadowing and even some undergrads have been able to help in suturing who were very qualified premeds and who later got into med school. So that goes to show you that USF physicians and faculty are big in getting the students involved.

why are you so ultra pro USF? i have to say, it seems like your biased to it strongly, did you attend there school, are you planning on attending their school, i know there is something to this

She's a student at USF (not sure if undergrad or post-bacc).

I prefer real patients and JMH at Miami is just perfect for this. It's right next to campus and has everything there. USF uses many hospitals around Tampa and traffic gets really bad so I'm not a fan of that. Ned, don't worry about UF too much. Where did you go for undergrad?

Its not that I'm biased towards USF as I'd have a hard time deciding between Miami and USF if I got in both. Its that I know more about their program because as an undergrad I spent a lot of time shadowing and helping others to find shadowing experiences with physicians around here, I spent a lot of time talking with adcoms at med school forums to get a feel for the school and felt USF was very straight forward and friendly/approachable vs. some of the other schools. Miami was approachable/friendly and seemed like a nice place for med school too, but places like say UF don't really rub me the right way with their we are better then everyone else attitude and their way of dancing around the issues when you ask them simple questions or the fact that from my friends who've interviewed there I've heard that they went in there with good impression and left with a bad one. In one case the person had an interview from hell and in the other case the person told me that the school had a knack for putting down other schools including HMS.

Also, I think UF is good if you want to be an academic physician and researcher, but I don't think they have the clinical diversity of either Miami or USF and felt that at most of these forums and from everything people have told me, it seemed like their M1 and M2 clinical opportunities are not as great as, again, USF or Miami. Furthermore, where USF and Miami will ease you into the program and take more integrative approaches, I think UF takes a more "let's dumb the hardest stuff from day one" sort of approach in their curricula.

That's why I don't say much in favor of UF. As per FSU, I don't think I'd mind going there because they seem to have a good learning atmosphere, but the fact that they are relatively new and require you to leave Tallahassee and go somewhere way out far for the clinicals kind of concerns me a bit. They need to develop stronger relations with the hospitals in the Tallahassee area as well as other clinical facilities closer to their school instead of sending students all the way to Orlando and Sarasota amonsgt other places. So that's why you don't hear me say much in favor of them. Also, they were built with goals of producing primary care physicians and physicians for rural medicine, and I'm not sure that that is what I want to do, so that is another strike against why I don't speak much in favor of FSU.

I'd speak more about Miami if I had the same knowledge base as I do of USF's program, but I feel there are more qualified people to answer questions on Miami's program who are either undergrads and have met with the deans and staff there and done work with their med school in the form of research or volunteering in their hospitals, or better yet the students there. On the other hand, I tend to know a lot about USF both from friends and interaction with the adcom members.

If you wanted my opinion of schools though, I'd say I'm tied between Miami main campus and USF, then Boca, then FSU, and really don't like UF even if I had the stats to get in there because i've been given a negative impression of them one too many times both through my interaction with people from UF during med school forums and through what I've heard from other friends who interviewed there.
