Florida Schools Application Thread (Part 3)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I find it very wierd things are quiet here lately, especially in terms of UMiami.

yes its very quiet, very quiet indeed...does anyone know for sure if they have offered a slew of acceptances after may 15th and were just waiting for the trickle down period , as in waitng to see if others decline their new acceptances....

Spoke to REL Larkin and said that May 15th withdrawals were pretty consistent with previous years....so what your ultimate USF waitlist projections are still good. I pysched myself out bc I had heard that FSU had seen a lot less withdrawal action and therefore a lot less waitlist movement than previous years...figuring there is a Florida trend...

I will have to wait a little more until I hear some news....but for others in waitlist limbo, I hope you get some good news today...make this a happy Friday!!! :hardy:

Just got the call like 20 minutes ago, I'm going to Boca!!!!!!

:wow:  :biglove: :biglove:

I guess one on the UM campuses started moving after all.

For those waiting, Don't lose hope the phone will ring sooner or later.
GOOD LUCK :luck: :luck:

Congrats to you!! 👍

Hopefully I will get something or other soon as well.

Anyone having problems with FSU's system not recognizing your email address? I am trying to check status of items I have sent but it is saying invalid email address...🙁

Well actually they are offering me $30,000/year for all four years...a merit based scholarship. While that is nice I think i will stick with USF. I actually just recieved an outside scholarship..a full ride that can be used anywhere through the congressional black caucus foundation. I need to designate which school I will be using the money for soon. Initially I had FSU COM because that was my only acceptance, but now things have gotten quite interesting. USF vs GW? Any thoughts.

Wow I just read this because I've been out of the country for the last several days. Congrats on getting all these offers. I don't think you can go wrong either way with USF or GWU. I see that you picked USF so welcome to Tampa. 😀

However, I will say one thing about DC is that everyone I've ever talked to who have been out there have said very very very good things about the city and their two main med schools out of Howard. i.e. GWU and GTown. I've heard nothing but positive things about both schools and the city and don't think you could go wrong either way as Gdubb and USF are both good schools with great programs and well reputated programs.

BTW congrats to others who have gotten off waitlists at UMiami Boca and UF and elsehwhere. Florida rocks. I miss it so much after being in India for the past several days. Can't wait to come home.

BTW bball, I agree that REL is the best!!! 😀

And for that matter FLORIDA IS THE BEST!!! People don't let this thread die just yet.

Drake, congrats on getting an acceptance at Miami. Must feel good to know you don't have to ship off to the islands.

Everyone else, I hope you get off the waitlists at your top choices.

oh good. it's not just me. i just finished freaking out because it was not recognizing my email address. this is the exact message that i kept getting:

"Sorry! The Email address you have entered (*****) is either invalid or a secondary application has not been requested yet for this applicant."

so i guess i became extremely paranoid and all kind of thoughts start coming to mind...did they lose my application? did they withdraw me for some reason? did i miss an important email? did they check my files and decide that they didn't want 2 accept me after all?
anyway, i'm glad that it's not just me. i guess it's something wrong with their system right now.

CONGRATS!!!:biglove:

gujuDoc: Thanks alot!! I've done the DC thing for the last four years (i'm now an official Howard university alumni 😀) so I'm pretty ready to move on. GW is a great school, but I wan to be closer to family and friends...plus Tampa is gorgeous👍

ok, good. At least it is a system error. I am extra paranoid because their system actually did drop my acceptance once! I tried to fill out their scholarship form today and it isnt going through correctly either...where is tech support when you need them? 😀

Thanks a lot guys. I loved the campus when I visited so I couldn't be happier with the placement. 😀

Good luck to the rest who will continue to be accepted up through July!

Oh yeah I totally totally forgot that you were from DC. Someone had mentioned that to me before but it slipped my mind. Yeah I think a change of pace after 4 years is good. For my friend who loved DC I think it was the opposite situation as he was in Florida his whole life so he wanted to experience the north. Good luck and welcome to Bulls country. 😀

Just stopping by to wish good luck to those that are still waiting.
:luck: :luck: :luck:
Specially those waiting for the UM waiting List 😉

Hey everyone! I have been out of town for a few days and just wanted to congratulate everyone who got taken off a waitlist! I also wanted to wish all of you who are still waiting good luck!

I might as well update.
After carefully considering UM-Boca and USF, I decided to stay in the Tampa Bay area and go to USF. There were several other factors besides the programs that affected my decision. Either way, I am looking forward to becoming a miserable, lifeless medical student.

OnmywayRN,

Good luck next year!!! So who else is out there still waiting???????

This thread finally slowing down.

Have you all started posting in class threads or transferred over to facebook?  😛

Thanks Guju. I just got a Facebook account and it took me a while to get it working. I feel so old. Like Dennis Miller says:
I come from that earlier time in America when palm pilot was a nickname you received upon entering puberty!

Good luck with the waitlist! Hope to see you at USF in the fall! :luck: :luck: :luck: We'll have to start a non-trad group and walk around in walkers on the first day of class, lol 😀

Oh, also...bump! Any other news regarding FL folks either for the just recently finished 2007 admissions and those applying for 2008 entry? :hardy:

who here is also gonna be a first year applicant this year? never too early to meet your fellow waitlisters (hopefully not)

im starting to lose hope on UM main campus, anyone feel that way thats on the list?

May 15- people drop
May 22- a week later, im guessing all open spots were offered to someone
May 29- maybe a few more people are still deciding
June 5 - a second much smaller wave of drops opening a some more seats
After June 5 - trickle down effect, one drop here and there

What do those on the UM main campus waitlist think? I've heard a few of my friends get off the waitlist here as well.

Why June 5? The last day for deposit is June 8. Anyway its irrelevant. There was someone who was admitted a few days INTO medical school.

oh im not saying its not possible, im just saying the chances beyond your june 8th date are really low probably no?

Yeah, if you don't have any other acceptances I would prepare the AMCAS and have it ready and begin improving your application for next month.

Waiting is very hard. Dont lose hope. The wait list cycle began in mid May and will continue through at least early, and probably mid July, before things begin to clamp down. Things get slim from about mid July onward, tho there are always limited changes often up to the class start. Those awaiting FSU are in that "after mid July" phase -- should be only a very few changes at this time......

i wish all of you to be accepted to your dream school ,

first of all. i wish all of you to be accepted to your dream school ,,whatever is ..
second ..if i'm a FL resident with 3.2 GPA 3.45 BCPM URM .AND NO mcat yet
do you think it worth to apply to MD or will be waste of time and try my luck over DO..IAM NOT SHURE IF FL 4 MD schools are URM friendly or no ..any idea

Hi Fido, It would be really hard for anyone to say what your chances are without taking the MCAT. Even if you had taken the MCAT, it would be difficult to say since there are many intangibles in the application process. In any event, I'm sure that a strong MCAT score could compensate for the lower GPA. Whether you would get into any or all of the 4 MD schools in FL is really anyone's guess...but I certainly wouldn't say that applying to MD is a waste of time.

Being an URM helps..and as far as I know, all med schools are pretty URM friendly (it's the law), but that alone won't get you into medical school. URM or not, GPA, MCAT score, volunteer/employment within the clinical setting with patient contact, research, leadership all are part of your application as well. Good luck:luck:

First, your GPA is below the average at all four of the FL schools. Are you still in college? If not, you may want to consider taking some post-bac coursework to help bring your GPA up. The courses should be taken at the undergrad level; if you take grad level coursework (i.e., get a Masters), that GPA will be calculated separately on AMCAS. The FL schools screen at a 3.0, so you're above that at least. But it would be better if you could get up to at least a 3.5 GPA before you apply.

Second, you should take the MCAT when you are prepared and feel confident that you can do well. Ideally, you want to be scoring in the high twenties or better on multiple practice tests before you take the real deal. Try to only take the MCAT once. The FL schools will screen you out if you score below a 24, but you should aim to get around a 30 if you can.

Third, the academic requirements are the same for everyone, regardless of your race or ethnicity. Contrary to popular SDN lore, unqualified people do not get into med school just because they are URMs. Conversely, well-qualified URMs will be sought after by any medical school, assuming that they meet all of that school's requirements. Note that some schools (including all of the FL schools, even Miami) have residency requirements and/or give preference to residents of that state. Be careful if you're a FL resident and applying OOS not to apply to schools that won't take FL residents.

Finally, find some good mentors who can help guide you through this process. There is an excellent new subforum here on SDN for Underrepresented in Healthcare. Also, the diversity office at your school should be able to give you help and advice on making your application as strong as possible. There are no guarantees in this process except that if you don't try, you definitely won't get in. Best of :luck: to you. 🙂

I know that USF and UMiami have ranked waitlists. Your USF waitlist rank depends on the score given to you by the committee. I don't know the scale, but I assume it is possible for more than one person on the waitlist to have the same numerical score assigned to their file. Therefore, how would these two rank? At USF, I thought that you should not really write LOI because it doesn't make a difference since they go strictly by rank. But if two people have the same numerical score, who gets ranked first?

Obviously, I have gotten to the point of obsessing about waitlists.

But if two people have the same numerical score, who gets ranked first?

It is my understanding at USF that each committee member is given a vote worth up to one point. However, a member can assign a score that is any fraction of this point to a candidate depending on how much they like them as an applicant. When I was on my interview I got the feeling from the way REL talked that these could be taken out 2 decimal places and that this was why it was unlikely that two students would get the same exact score and end up on the same spot on the waitlist. But that part he wasn't as detailed about so it's only my guess. However, he did say that if two students somehow managed to get exactly the same ranking, the person who had been interviewed at the earlier date would be offered the first spot that opened up.

However, he did say that if two students somehow managed to get exactly the same ranking, the person who had been interviewed at the earlier date would be offered the first spot that opened up.

So how would two students with the same score who interviewed on the same day fare, in this increasingly hypothetical case? 😀😆

Thanks that answers my question! Magenta, will you be attending a FL school?

whats the deal with UM? its been an 85 day weekend. Are there any new reports of people getting accepted? if so, what were there MCAT and sci GPA?

boo hoo...Hey everyone waiting with me...how you doing?! 🙂

Well I'm on USF's waitlist at the moment, but I'm not holding my breath. So unfortunately I think i'll be applying again this year. Eventually I do want to end up at a Florida school though.

Magenta, where are you on the USF waitlist? I'm hanging out there too, but I hope to hear good news in the next few weeks.

I'm checking SDN obsessively only to find nothing relevant to my particular spot on USF waitlist, but, of course, I still check! Working but feeling like a lame duck with the clock ticking on my time here.

Not in a very good spot, REL told me my chances were't very good of getting off the waitlist. As much as it sucks at least USF lets me know where I am on the list so I'm not sitting around waiting for something that's not going to happen.
