Florida Schools Application Thread (Part 3)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah but that brings up a third scenario. Taking the mcat again this year puts me off another year, which I don't really want to do.

Yes and if you don't get in this year you are going to have to waste another year. And what do you mean you can't take the MCAT again this summer and submit those scores to schools for this round of applying????

I think you should retake it. 26 isn't bad but you are going to be competing with people who have 27-43 on the range of scores with most being in the 30-39 range somewhere.

Just think about that some.

Average score is 24-25 somewhere. Average score of acceptance in general is near 28, median score at most Fl. schools is roughly 29-30+.

I do know people who got in with a 26 in the past but that was like almost 3 years ago. You might have a shot at FSU with that score especially if you are disadvantaged. However, things have gotten a bit more competitive with USF in the last 2 or 3 years and the other schools. Even FSU is now getting people with 30+ scores mostly. They are increasing their averages slowly by becoming a bit more selective.

I'd personally take the time to take it again to be on the safe side. I'm not saying its impossible to get in somewhere with a lower score but your chances are not as great as the person who improves their score to a 30 or higher.

I rushed to take the mcat once, I don't want to do it again. I don't want to have to take it in august, because I'd be rushing to take it again, and it would be coming in late. So if I took the mcat again, I'd be putting off applying until the '09 cycle.
I know I'm going to be competing against people with better scores, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway. I'm applying to several DO schools too.

Rel,

Can you tell me if I would be considered at USF, or if it would be a waste of money for me to apply? 26 mcat, 3.5 gpa, 2.5 years of hospital volunteering with tons of patient contact, work experience at a hospital and as a youth sports coach, and I was an eagle scout back in the day.

I know admissions are much more complicated than what I've just given you, but do you think it would be worth it for me to apply?

I would need some additional information, but at first blush you have the medical volunteerism, limited community volunteering, but the question would be the academics. Your GPA would be stronger if you told me that you had a poor freshman year due to college adjustments and have had 3 much stronger years. The recent MSAR showed that UM, UF, USF were all at about 3.7-3.85 entering class GPA's with UM/UF at 32 MCAT and USF at 30. FSU was lower in the GPA, dont remember the actual number (3.6?), and 27 MCAT. Your academics as presented do not appear to be as competitive as many. An MCAT very near or above 30 would help, especially if there is a positive GPA trend. Our applicant pool has increased from 1800 to 2700 in only two years with a goodly number of competitors who have the academics and EC's. We still only interview around 350. That means that a 3.5/26 might have gotten some attention 2-3 years ago, but now it wouldnt be common unless there were some very unique other reasons that you would be valuable in a class. I cant tell you that you wont be selected for an interview, but I can tell you that your odds wouldnt be high based on what I now know.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to see if anybody has any good news! I know several of you are on waitlists and hoping for movements...

Good luck!

I'm so frickin happy! 😆 I got the best news of this year so far...I'm off the waitlist and have been accepted to USF! True to form, REL Larkin was always forthcoming with the information and always stated that I had a good change of ultimate acceptance, but I interviewed early and the wait has been long, but so worth it. I LOVE USF!!! 😍

Now my turn for all the smileys!!! Woo-hoo!

I'm not quite sure I know what you mean by very unique reasons, but I will be applying this cycle, and hopefully there are some very unique reasons 🙂.

BTW: This was your second time applying right???? I seem to recall you telling me that once. If that's the case then it only makes this victory all the more sweet.

BTW one of my closest friends got off the waitlist at Miami so she might be freeing up a spot at USF soon if she hasn't already done that. Just thought I'd share.

i made it in umiami any luck for greg1184 or you dr zeke?

Is that where you are going to go or are you still deciding between that and your previous acceptance???

One of my close friends got off the waitlist there and received a 10k scholarship. I think they made the right decision to go there over their other acceptance b/c it was really time for them to move on and they needed the change. There were other circumstances as to why I think Miami was a better choice for them over USF(their other acceptance).

BTW: I forgot to say it: CONGRATULATIONS

You can do the banana dance now. 😉 😆

Yes, this is my second time applying...and it is very sweet, indeed! In the beginning of the process, I had my heart set on Miami (because it would require us to move) and now certain things have come to pass in our life which really makes me feel that Tampa might be for the best (move and all)!

On that note, I know someone who got off the waitlist at UCLA and will be opening a spot at UF as well. Good luck to those waiting!

And big congratulations to NervousNed!:clap::clap:Do you know where you are going?

Yeah I agree. Everything happens for a reason. At least it worked out and you are going to be an MD. 😀 😀

Rel,

I have one more question for you. When is the latest I could re-take the MCAT and still have it influence whether or not I get invited to an interview at USF? The last offering in 2007 is 9/8, and then I'm guessing late January is when they will be starting up again.

I'll be applying to USF this cycle as a CA resident. do any of you have experiences with USF as an out of state applicant?

on a similar note, what about OOS applicants with avg. stats (the usual 3.5/30)

thanks

USF as an OOS is just about impossible. It is not recommended. Not sure if they have accepted any OOS in the past few yrs and if they did Im sure they had incredible stats with big ties to the state.

There is a USF student who posts from time to time...vtucci...I believe she was accepted to USF as an out-of-state applicant. She is now a third year.

In the past USF did not accept out of staters. Howevr, in the recent years they have started taking a few out of staters every now and then. Vtucci is one example. There was the girl who used to post as Scubadoc who also went to USF I believe. She came from S.C. originally.

Other then that, I met a guy this past year who said he was originally from Pennsylvania somewhere and got accepted as an out of stater.

So it isn't impossible but it is definitely tougher to get in as an out of stater.

As I said above this post I'm posting now, it is not impossible but definitely tougher.

As a Cali resident your best bet in Fl. is UMiami. UMiami has two campuses though the larger and more reputable of the two is Miami Miller in downtown miami.

As a Ca. resident I'd also apply to places like GWU, SLU, NYMC or other NY schools, Drexel, etc.

I'd get in contact with REL either by PMing him or emailing him at [email protected] to see what he says about your situation.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong again. And still Wrong. Do your homework and respond with accurate information please. Then I will grade your research and correct it where necessary Grasshopper.

its not 50% like a Univ of Mich, but its not that scarce either

I vaguely remember somebody saying that USF has a high OOS tuition to discourage OOS applications (as do most state schools), but treats their applications more or less the same as in-state. Is this correct?

No, no luck...I'm starting to think that all my hard work is useless. I haven't been on much, because I'm pretty stressed at work and I'm a bit stressed with this waitlist business. I'm going to have to start looking for a place to live in Boca, but I really don't even know if I should be looking Miami too and my lease is going to be up at the end of July and I'm like AAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

I couldn't get on a year contract for the rowing club, because I don't know where I'm going to live... Luckily we worked something out, but I mean really, it's the little things...I'm starting to wonder....

If you do end up having to go to Boca can you transfer after 2 years the way some people transfer to different med schools after 2 years????????

Maybe you could look into that and then get to do your clinicals at miami. I'm sorry you didn't get my friend's luck and get off the waitlist yet.

Nope, you probably can't...aaaaaaah!!!

Goodbye HIV research *sob*

The good news is that waitlist movmt hasn't ended yet cuz someone I know might be dropping Miami Miller for an acceptance elsewhere.

You're still going to be a U Miami student, and you still have access to the Miami campus resources. You want to do HIV research, then arrange to go down there during the summer after your first year or during your fourth year.

Yeah...I will do that if it has to come to that... I like Miami tho...🙁

Shrug. I got rejected pre-secondary from my initial top choice school two years ago. It was the very first school I heard back from, and I got no explanation beyond just don't let the door hitcha where the lord splitcha. Nothing's under your control except your own attitude; opportunities come to those who make them and are willing to take advantage of them. You got the ball already--grab it and start running for the goal. 🙂

FYI i just got an email from FSU titled "FSU Early Decision Secondary Request". i didn't want to apply early decision so i will probably email them today asking about that. but just so everybody knows FSU's secondaries appear to be coming out now.

Just to let you know....they are planning to accept a greater portion of their class by early decision each year and eventually accept the majority of their class from early decision applicants (this is WAY down the road tho). I believe this is another attempt to keep with their mission...so, if you REALLY want FSU, early decision isnt a bad way to go.:luck:

I know I know, I'm just a bit disappointed in how things are playing out right now and a bit concerned that this just isn't going to happen. I'm sure wherever I end up i'll make the best of it. I'm not a pessimist, it's just frustrating being on a waitlist...

Tried to respond, don't know what happened...yes, I looked for this thread yesterday and it fallen so far back, I stopped searching...Anyhow, looks like the regulars on this FL thread are getting ready to start school in August (or have already started) and are enjoying their last bit of freedom and fun, which apparently doesn't include SDN.

I guess it might be time to let this thread and start a new thread for those applying for the 2008 cycle...

R.I.P. FL thread of 2007 +pity+

So I heard that REL is leaving USF from a couple different sources. Let's see if he responds to my PM.

oh and for new applicants, you might want to start a new thread for the new cycle.

So have any of you waitlistees been getting off the waitlists lately

Tomorrow at 5pm my resignation from USF takes effect. I am moving laterally to the new medical school at UCF and will begin there on Friday.

Ohh ok. Thanks for responding. Good luck with everything at UCF. We will miss you in good old Tampa but I think you'll make a great addition to a promising looking school.

Congrats, REL, and best of luck to you with your new job. 🙂 If you have some time, would you please tell us more about FL's newest med school? I know basically nothing about it.

REL,

I had two more quick questions?

1. Will you still post on SDN to help premeds once you start your new position at UCF?? We'd really love it if you did.

2. Do you know the contact email for whoever took over your old position or name and can I have it via PM or whatever just for reference if I needed to contact them??

From a post on June 15, 2007 in the USF Class of 2011 post in the Allopathic Class Threads forum...
Thank you for all of your wishes and support. It was a difficult decision to depart USF COM. I know that you will get outstanding support from Student Affairs in the MD Program and that my departure will allow others to grow.

As for me, I won't be leaving Florida and will continue to be available to medical school applicants and students. I am making a lateral move to become the Director of Admissions at the new UCF MD Program in Orlando.

From a post on June 15, 2007 in the USF Class of 2011 post in the Allopathic Class Threads forum...

hahaha LOL I totally missed that line cuz I was only interested in the first half when he first posted that. My bad.

I figure he's just busy moving between jobs. I know he recently called (like in th e past day or two) a colleague of mine at to let them know that the low-tier waitlist is now out of reach for USF this year at the wait-list is not moving hardly at all. 🙁

hi

At Duke I double majored in biomedical and electrical engineering, and got a math and chemistry minor BUT i wound up with a 3.45 GPA BUT i got a 38Q on MCAT.

Will the high MCAT offset the low GPA given these circumstances? I applied to all the florida schools but im not sure what my chances are as an in-state resident.

thanks.
