Ooh! I have a real question for you guys! I've recently been thinking I'd like to do my residency at Jackson Memorial; my dad did his there, I love Miami and it's such a busy and well-respected hospital. So, I was wondering...do you think my chances of getting a spot there would be worse if I decide not to go to UM for med school?

Well I think that by doing your residency there, you would be given a great chance to network and get to know the Program Directors... Also, Jackson accepts a lot of their own. What did your dad think about his residency, did he like it, etc.?

Take a look at how many of their own students stay on. But I'd say that if you REALLY want to decrease your chances of matching at Miami for residency, there are lots of better ways to do it besides going to other American allopathic schools. You might try going to school in the Caribbean, barely passing your classes and the boards, not meeting anyone who can give you a strong LOR in your specialty of choice, and writing your PS in Swahili. Actually, a felony conviction or two for violent crime or drugs probably would be about the best thing you could possibly do to avoid matching there.

Sweet! As long as prostitution and stealing kids' lunch money remain misdemeanors, I think I might have a chance. I guess since I'm not completely settled on where I'd like to do my residency (goodness, I'm not even sure where I'm going to go to med school) I'm not going to worry about it, I was just curious what you guys thought.

Yrodri, my dad liked his residency there but it was a really long time ago. Plus, he might have REALLY liked it there because he could speak spanish (he didn't know really any English when he came to the states) and wasn't as discriminated against as he was in Philadelphia where he did his internship (I guess back then they did those separately). Are you thinking of doing your residency there, being a native Miamian?

Haha you're right on the mark there - yea I was hoping to do my residency here... I really enjoy the diversity and the business in Jackson. Nice, what country did he come from?

That's cool, I agree with you on both accounts. Both my parents are from Ecuador, but my mom went to college in the states so she knew English. I've heard many stories of my dad calling her during his intern year and her having to come to the hospital and translate between him and a patient. Man, that kind of stuff would never happen now. 🙂

Awesome lol. His own personal translator. Nice, what part of Ecuador. My brother visited that country a while back, went to Quito and, I forget the name of the other city, but its in the mountainss and I think has a bigger population then Quito. I think it started with a G - ?

My family's from Quito. How'd your brother like it? Hmm, I'm not sure of a city in the mountains with a bigger population than Quito, but if it's on the coast that would be Guayaquil.

So what does everyone think they might go into? Obviously, Q is going to be proctologist extraordinaire, but what about everyone else?

FYI, Burnsie, I want you to know that I really appreciate you volunteering to let me practice on you.

No problem, Q, anything for you. We can begin when you come here in a couple weeks.

Guayaqil, exactly, there you go. He actually loved it - stayed for 3 weeks I believe. I was thinking about going into either neurology or neurosurgery... cause of my interest in the nervous system. How about yourself ? Proctology Q? Thats great! lol.... Colon cleansing is the cash cow of proctology!

Having the inappropriate sense of humor that I do, my friends have always joked how I should become a "woman doctor" (aka ob/gyn)...and I just might. I think delivering babies would be awesome. And you get to do some surgery, deal with some emergencies, and have your own practice. But who knows, I may just join Q in the proctology ranks.

I've shadowed my cousin, which is a gyn/ob, for the past three years. 1) Women make excellent patients - know how to communicate. 2) Very nice blend of surgery and seeing patients. 3) Always in high demand.

A pretty solid choice.

Thanks, although the on-call hours leave something to be desired, I definitely think the diversity of experiences makes it a cool specialty. Although the gyn part of it would take a lot of getting used to...

I used to want to be a neurosurgeon too...I'm fascinated by the nervous system. But I didn't want to work 100 hour weeks and being a neurologist can be pretty depressing at times, which I don't know if I could handle. But I think it's a great career choice...really interesting, for sure.

I am not too sure what specialty I want to go into... I wish I knew. I think at this point I am leaning towards something more general, like family practice or emergency medicine. Hopefully something in med school really strikes me. We'll see...

What can I say. This is how things work in Miami- the trick is to not over-oil yourself when working with dangerous machinery.

I have been constantly intrigued by the doctor my school suggested the female athletes see- who was listed as a "sports gynocologist". I don't know what was so sporty about her, but I have wondered ever since what that is.

I ruled it out though. I didn't have that epiphany that turns 50% of medical students into OB/GYNs when I watched births in South Africa (they let me catch a baby). Basically I thought it was one of the grossest things ever. Cool, but gross. And by cool, I mean gross.

ya, i have shadowed a ob/gyn when he was delivering a fat 14 year olds second baby! 😱 i can verify the grossness. lots of juices flying. but definetly a cool thing to view

Unfrozen,

In what part of S. Africa did you do medical work? I volunteered in a clinic in S. Africa this past summer. I was in a rural village in the Krags (A mountain range near the coast).

Yeah I can't say I've ever seen a live birth, so I don't know how I'll react. By the way, you'll see some pretty gross stuff being an EM doc, but I can definitely see how an 8 pound person coming out of another person would be in a league of its own.

Yeah, working in an emergency room, you see a lot of gross stuff. It's a lot of legs arriving in separate ambulances, knives coming out of people's eyes, etc. Which is totally gross.

I think what I found so jarring about birth was that it was just so common, and a good thing, not a bad one, like having a knife in your face (can you guess what my most jarring ED experience was?), and yet, it was still so totally disgusting.

And, I was working and living out the outskirts of Cape Town in the Flats. What was the medical care like out there? Nonexistant?

I haven't seen anything nearly as exciting during my shifts in the ED; in fact, mine were downright boring (I mean, don't get me wrong, I dont want people to get hurt, but if they're going to get injured anyway it'd be cool if it were during my shift so I could observe how the doctors fix it). During one of my friend's shifts, a guy came in with a complete hand avulsion and he got to see the surgery where the surgeons opened up a slit under the skin of the guy's chest, stuck the avulsed hand in the little pocket they made, and then sewed it back up. How cool is that?? I, on the other hand, got to see chest pain after chest pain after stubbed toe. Oh well.

Yeah--health care was virtually non-existant. We had a doc come ONCE every two weeks! They didn't even have bandages. But the experience was absolutely AMAZING and I'm dying to go back. PM me if you ever wanna chat about ZA 😉

Aww, I miss the days when the Florida thread was always at the top of page 1. Now all I get to do to at work is have annoying arguments about affirmative action and try to answer people's questions about schools I've applied to. I don't want to actually contribute anything remotely intelligent or helpful to this forum! Help!

I loved it too, and would go back in a second. I had a pretty different experience though it sounds like- I was in the city where there were a lot of hospitals, but people were so ridiculously sick, they were completely overwhelmed. I was pretty amazed I have to say. Even the worst off people here have it good compared to that.

Speaking of-ish, did anyone get the Miami magazine thingy in the mail today? I'm getting really sucked in to this Gateway to the Carribbean/Latin America thing.. Clinics in Haiti? I'm stocking up on cargo pants already.

I got it too. I put it in the file of things that I mean to read and likely never will. :meanie:

I looked at the pictures for attractive male students. I also read captions under pictures, but I think I got the gist.

Are there any? Just because they're in Miami doesn't mean that they're tan playboys lounging on the beach. 😛

No kidding. Miami does not have an attractive population of men whatsoever (no offense guys). My favorite activity- heading out to a bar, and realizing I can see OVER everyone at 5'8"...

It must be, hands down the best city to be a moderately attractive guy in of all time.

Put it in the bathroom. That way, it practically guarantees you'll read it. At least that's what I do. :meanie:

And honestly, I hate all debates that are remotely political, ethical, religious, etc. that take place on an anonymous internet forum. Yet, for whatever reason, I always seem to get caught up in them. I think it's because once someone says something that discriminates against anyone, I can't keep my mouth shut.

I'm with you on that one, caveman. I'm really looking forward to doing some medically-related experiences abroad during school, esp. 4th year electives. Speaking of which, has anyone "backpacked through Europe?" This is such a cliche thing to do (and one I am thinking of doing next summer), but I don't exactly know how to go about it. Does one stay at hostels, live on the streets, go to 5-star hotels and tell the front desk I lost my key to room 422 so I can let myself in?

And also, the best you're going to get is probably tanned playboys. Which, would you believe, isnt really my type.... egh!

Im doing the backpacking thing this summer before med school...england, paris, amsterdam, germany, switzerland, italy, greece, then finish it up in israel. I'm so excited! Probably about a month total. I think we are mostly staying in hostels. There are a lot of websites that have info about particular hostels. My gf has fam in england, and a friend in italy, so we will definetly hit them up for some free housing as well  We are getting a eurorail pass and touring the country by rail.

You'll have a great time! I love Europe. My Mom is Dutch, so of course I am partial to Amsterdam! And London is one of my favorite cities.

This summer I want to go to the South of France, Italy and Greece. Anyone ever been to these places? If so, where do you recommend going or "must sees"???

Thanks!

I didn't get to visit southern France, which I've heard is stunning--but I would recommend that you also check out northern France. Visiting Normandy/Omaha Beach was by far one of the coolest things I've ever done!

Take the following advice from someone who has traipsed around every continent on the planet (except one, australia) at one point or another looking and/or smelling horrible. At one point or another in backpacking around Europe, you get very sick and tired of looking hideous while everyone else looks so fantastic. I think the way to go is, map out a route and a time limit you can honestly deal with. Because it's a waste to do parts of europe where you're thinking about how much you need a shower and want to go home. It varies by person. I personally would save the best for last (for my money, Paris), and when I got there, threw away everything I never wanted to see again, bought something new to wear, and hit the town in style (and stayed in a hotel).

That's all I know on that. And after the last olympics, I REALLY want to go to Greece. I think I'm going to try for that this summer.
I have also heard the beaches of Croatia are unmissable. But, if you've never been to the South of France, you should go, and try to get on P Diddy's yacht and see the rest of europe in that thing. Screw backpacking.
Oh, and note, the entire country of France is closed in August.

I've traveled most of Europe over the years --- spent 4 years on Crete. An absolutely spectacular island, mountains and pristine beaches and water so clear you can be out a great distance in a boat and still see the bottom. Rhodes is fine too, but a little more expensive......but still cheap by European standards -- the beaches of choice for European college kids over the summer due to beauty and low cost......house wine is fine and salads are great too....dinner at 9pm, disco's open at about 11pm.....er, I guess they're not disco's anymore huh....... 😀 ....ah, well still a great place --

Did you mention your trip on your app? I think I did at a couple places that asked about travel, which I'm sure was on UM and USF. I remember thinking "no one will have this!". Should have known Q. Should have known...

oh yeah, my cousin told me this. Apparently he went there in August hoping to learn from these famous chefs but they were all on vacation. I still wonder how he planned on learning from them when he didn't even give them advance notice 😕

Hey, what are the good deals for going to Europe? Has anyone tried http://efcollegebreak.com/public/browse.asp

Hey DrMike, that sounds like a ridiculously awesome trip. Do you have any recommendations on hostel websites? or any websites that give you great deals? I'd love to do this, but I'm just not sure where to start. Thanks!

If I ever went to antarctica, I'd stuff a penguin in my backpack and take it back with me.
