Hurricane and I read that Unfrozen, thanks for the good laugh lol.. Yea, I believe that research was being conducted in their highly praised "McKnight Institute." And yea Runner, I remember that brochure as well, they did get a lot of crap for it lol....to this day, I still tease my UF friends about it.

haha, the best part of that article was the picture caption. ok, that and the experiment with the land mines. funny article, but yet somehow dolphins on land seem to be more productive than I am

Why does everybody have to hate on UF? So we got a picture on a media guide wrong? So what? I will say this for our choice of mascot (be it alligator or crocodile): we'd win in a straight-up fight against any other mascot in the ncaa...and in-state theres no competition. Miami's mascot looks like Popeye dressed up in a bird costume. And FSU's mascot is, sadly, human. I don't know what USF's mascot is, but unless its like a burmese python or something, I wouldnt give it much of a chance either.

In a battle between an alligator and a category 5 hurricane, hands down I'm going to have to go with the hurricane. USF bull hopped up on speed vs. a blind alligator? Going to have to go with the bull on that one. and an American Indian from the Seminole tribe on a horse with a spear and/or harpoon and or/javelin vs. an alligator backed into the corner of a 15' by 15' room? Again, going to have to go with the Seminole. don't know about the horse, though...he's on his own.

My school's mascot has several things going for it:

-Magical skills
-Multiple horror movies starring it
-A drunken Irishman's tenaciousness and fisticuffs skills

Anguish due to inferiority and rejection?

First of all, Go Quakers.

Second, the hurricane is clearly more powerful than an aligator. The story with that bird is that the Ibis can sense an impending hurricane, and takes shelter before everyone else, so the other animals follow it, or get their asses kicked at football. Presumably this includes aligators. Also, they could really peck your eyes out. Badly.

PS- safety school.

Nowhere in Miami's media guide does it specifically state the category of the hurricane...though it would be absurdly insensitive should they claim it to be a cat 5, particularly in light of all the damage from Andrew in Homestead, not to mention the three that went through in 2004. Besides, Miami uses as its *mascot* an apparently inebriated bird with what can only be decribed as a surly disposition. Lets ask ourselves: would you want your university representing its student body as a p*ssed off bird? I didnt think so...

That said, p*ssed off or not, its no contest, the Gator wins.

FSU's Seminole tribesman has only one spear. Even if he manages 70% accuracy (considering he's being charged by an angry alligator with the jaws of death), the Gator doesnt die right away...especially if he doesnt manage to connect to a critical point--major artery, et. So, 30% of the time, the gator wins outright, of the remaining 70%, the Gator lasts long enough to finish him off at least 70% of the time--so the Gator has an 80% kill rate. I would call that dominant.

As for the Bull on speed--this is ridiculous, the Bull runs for the hills to stick with animals he has a chance against--antelopes and whatnot.

Nah, I don't think that's it. I think it's more that for some reason UF has a superiority complex and this attitude like they're better than everyone else when I don't think it's deserved. I've also heard that undergrads there did that to students at other in-state schools, which really doesn't make much sense either. UF is a good school, but we're not comparing apples and oranges here.

Besides, the onion article and people bringing up the media guide thing were just jokes...I'm sure no offense was intended by anyone.

But the alligator is being cornered! Not only that, but the alligator is severely claustrophobic, thereby launching himself into an incapacitating panic attack.

Don't underestimate bulls on speed...besides, 10% of the antelope population carries leprosy. I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like much fun to me.

LOL. I'm a gator and I had to laugh. My little sis is a Quaker too. No rivalry there; her school isn't too hot at football (not that UF was great this year either) and Wharton owns in business (UF is simply first tier).

Wow, you guys are having quite a debate. I'll watch. 🙂

caveman, sorry I'm sporadic with posting but where are you planning to go to med school? Another Ivy? Good luck.

Hah. I didn't mean that between penn and uf..... that was my Miami defense. I went to the football games where both schools were yelling that at each other. All my friends who didn't go either place for undergrad just stood there confused.

I actually googled this. And you know what? You're full of ****. 👍

Dude, you can change the parameters any which way to give the Bull a handicap, but at the end of the day he's goin down like stroke volume in a patient with systolic dysfunction.

I was just talking about my little sis and I too. She could yell "safety school" to me all day. We're happy with where we went (which is the important part). Although, despite all her scholarships and grants, she's kicking my arse when it comes to the debt competition. Bright Futures was great, but I'll rack up more debt later.

Burns, did you decide to go to the UF interview?

I would definitely have to agree with Deuist and Burns. Gators turn everything into a competition!!...I guess they feel they have to prove something...like a short man with a big truck!

I was in Publix a few days before New Years grocery shopping, minding my own business and this CRAZY MAN came up screaming at me "GO GATORRRRSSSS" (of course he only had 2 teeth), because I was wearing an U of Iowa sweatshirt (my fiance went there). I didn't even REALIZE they were playing each other until that moment! Come on gators...have a little more class!

well actually it's armadillos, not antelopes. For whatever reason, I read antelope but my brain processed aramadillo. Either way, scary ****.

Fine, your gator can beat all the mascots of the Florida schools. As long as you know it wouldn't stand a chance against a Devil in a blue uniform. Behold the Gothic Wonderland!

Okay, in all seriousness, if all the UF students think this lowly of students from other Florida schools, let me know now so I can cancel my interview.

I thought you went to school OOS? Anyway, you shouldn't take this trash talking too seriously. I don't think UF students actually think they are better than other students on the individual basis, at least they shouldn't. Everyone is prideful of their respective schools.

After all, if you're at the same med school, you're all on equal footing. So you have to be a real arse if you're pompous about going to UF ug instead of FSU/UM/USF ug, while all of you are at UFCOM.

If I had a billion dollars I would buy an NBA team, draft Reddick and sit him at the end of the bench, never play him and hire a thousand people to heckle him at home games.

Or even better, I would make him practice against Georghe Muresan. <<Three pointer by Reddick...BLOCKED by Muresahn...thats 14 in a row>>

Aaaah. The things I could do with a billion dollars.

Anyway, that I know of, no one at Florida cares about people from the other FL schools. I never looked down upon them. But I certainly didnt look up at them either. Since most people who go to FL (as undergrads, dont know about the med students) are residents who also (probably) applied to the other state schools and chose FL over them because they thought it was better, there must be some residual superiority...but I think everyone knows that there isnt much difference between the med schools, especially UF and Miami.

Conversely, some (but certainly not all) of the people at the other state schools (USF, FSU and UCF) probably applied to UF as undergrads and didnt get in, so have a chip on their shoulder. I'm not saying theres a large contingent of people who fall into this category, but its a lot more likely for UF than against (ie its unlikely a larger % of people got accepted to both UF and FSU and chose FSU).

More than anything the superiority is about athletics, not academics. If you went to Duke, you must understand that, with UNC being so close and all.

Hey, yep I did my undergrad out of state (the Gothic Wonderland refers to Duke...I know, it's a pretty obscure reference). and I think junebug and whoever else is trash-talking the other med schools in Florida, not undergrad institutions. I mean I don't take it personally regardless if I go to med school in-state or out, I would just rather talk about mint M&Ms than hear things that could potentially offend others on this thread. And for you, compliments of the Onion, headline: "Bush hides U.S. report card in sock drawer." Good stuff, good stuff.

In other news, the new Sundried Tomato and Basil Wheat Thins are really addictive, and I highly recommend them to anyone not on a diet.

Poor guy, he takes so much crap from everyone at games...I respect his ability to play through it. I don't understand the whole debate over whether or not he'll be a good pro player...the guy is an amazing shooter. Seeing as only double teams can stop him and I doubt NBA teams are going to double team him, I think he'll do just fine.

And if you are arguing about athletics (in which case I apologize I read you wrong), then I have no idea who is the best in Florida. I've always been a 'noles fan, but they haven't been good at football in years. Overall with all sports taken into consideration, I'd think I'd have to give the edge to UM but UF is close. Duke's football team is pathetic...I believe at one game we actually lost to the other team's cheerleaders. It was a low point.

Oh I do love myself some Wheat Thins, with the delicious combo of sundried tomato and basil? A box at Publix has my name all over it. I already raided Publix yesterday. I'm a cheap arse so I love to shop post-holiday clearance sales for candy. If you're going to eat poorly, might as well pay minimally for it. I got 2 bags of reese's and 3 bags of pink and red M&Ms for 50% off, no mint ones though. Those babies come at a premium (and I still can't find them!)

Off to read my Onion homework assignment.

Well, I hate to disappoint you but that was just a headline, no article attached. But I'm sure there's plenty of Bush material out there...if you haven't checked out www.georgewbush.org, you should. They've got some pretty funny stuff.

Well done on the candy, too. I really like chocolate Cadbury mini-eggs (not the filled ones, just no holds barred chocolate with a candy outer shell), and they came out in January this year. There's always an occasion to get fat, isn't there?

Not to change the current subject, but its funny you guys mention wheat thins when I JUST BOUGHT A BOX of Wheat Thins TODAY!!!!!!!

I love those things, but they are sooooooooooo bad for you and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy tooooooooooooooo addictive. You know that old commercial ad for Pringles........."Once you start you can't stop" or something like that??? that's how I get with wheat thins. I keep wanting more once I start eating one because it is soooooooooo addictive. I like eating them with this garlic herb dip by a company called Arlouette. It is yummy. 😛

As per the topic of school mascots, I think MY own school has the worst mascot. Our bull mascot is sooooooo lameooooooo. Of course it doesn't matter to me, cuz I hate football and am not a fan of watching sports, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

I guess you guys got to look at things in perspective, with the exception of our mascot........the other 3: Gators, Seminoles, and Hurricanes all make sense because they represent 3 things that Florida is really well known for whether good or bad, so I can see where they all make sense in their own way.

I, however, think I'm going to go with Burnsie and say I'm a Hurricanes Fan if I had to choose one of the three. But then again, I dont watch much sports.

On the downside, players from Miami have an annoying habit of saying they went to school at "The U," which takes away several points pre-interview. I expect they'll more than make up for it in "Attractiveness of General Population" at Miami Beach.

Not to go off topic with the Wheat Thins or anything 🙄 , but I have never trash-talked about other med schools or undergrads. I was simply making a point about there being a difference. Why does everyone on SDN have to corrupt and overdramatize what other people say? This is bordering on libel. I really need to get back to my Cardio lectures. Its impossible to be productive when there is so much arguing on non-arguments to be done on SDN....sigh.

Well, I wasn't the only one who interpreted it that way, just so you know. But I already apologized in case I misread you, so don't worry about it. The arguing over non-arguing is done, and now we're talking about more important things like wheat thins. Next topic: why guju is such a badass.

What I hate is when perfectly good arguments fizzle into a sea of apologies for no reason. It was about time we got into a good florida school rumble. I'll just declare the "U" to be the winner, and we'll move on from here.

Now, which is better, sundried tomato wheat thins, or rosemary and olive oil triscuits? I would look into that if you already haven't.

Unfrozencaveman...where are you going next year?

I haven't had the sundried tomato wheat thins or the rosemary and olive oil triscuits...but I would say I'd rather buy the wheat thins...they are so yummy.

I haven't tried the rosemary and olive oil triscuits, but do NOT try the garlic triscuits unless you expect them to taste like crap, in which case you'll be pleased. I think the ranch wheat thins are also pretty good, but I wouldn't know for sure because someone who thinks he's got a lot of game keeps eating all mine before I can. 😡

I'm stuck between Miami and Pitt (I'm on the waitlist there though) basically. I'm going to hit up the second looks and just go with the gut I think. But between those two, I am really REALLY stuck. Also haven't quite gotten the guts to withdraw from UF, but will probably soon. Err. I think.

Awww..Mr. Burns...is your roommate eating your wheat thins? Next time slap his hand and tell him "NO!"....kinda like I do with my puppy....minus the slapping part.

FAU or Miami campus? (I think you previously said FAU...not sure though). Do you know when the second look for UM is?....I heard about the one for the FAU campus, but not for the Miami campus.

I'm in to the Miami campus. I thought about changing, but I'm going to stick with miami.

And no, I have no idea what's up with the second look, or if they have one at all. I need an excuse to get down there though. I'm freezing.

I'm accepted into FAU, but requested to change bc I don't want to move after 2 years....hopefully I'll get to change, but I'd be happy at either.

Don't know where in the US you are, but I'd rather be in snow than this "freezing" weather down here....to me, it's easier to take the cold when you have the benefits of snow and get to wear the oh so cute big jackets with fur collars....instead, I wore that down here cuz I was cold one time and got very strange looks! haha...So I stick to my jean skirts (I hate jeans)...and just freeze my arse off and don't get any strange looks! 🙂

For what it's worth, the FAU campus is pretty awesome. I already own my place in miami though, and if I went to FAU I would have to live at home... So, not so tough choice there. I'm already contemplating though a good old fashioned kegger-while-your-parents-are-out-of-town with the FAU kids though. Even at 27, I'd imagine that would be fun.

And, right now I'm in Boston, where the old coat collection is getting a great workout. There is actually a moment of excitement every morning when I get dressed for work, reuniting with my winter clothes. That is pretty much gone though once I walk out the door, and realize cold weather sucks.

Close, my boyfriend. and then he yells at me for eating his Sundried Tomato and Basil wheat thins when I'm the one who introduced him to them! The nerve. Yeah, you heard me.

Don't upset Davis, she knows where you live.

Anyone have a ballpark estimate on when the UM class will be full? I know they interview through April (myself earlier this week on Monday), so I'm hoping I don't get put on the waitlist...

Will you be "dragging" your boyfriend with you whereever you go to school? (I say "dragging" because that's what I feel like I'm doing to my fiance...he's in the Navy and jumps out of helicopters to rescue people in the water...he'll be leaving his sweet and exciting job to come with me and find a job doing lord knows what just to support us....I feel sooooo bad for ruining his career for mine!....Oh well, one day he'll make a good trophy husband and will spend hours working out between dropping off/picking up the kids at school!)....I can dream!! 🙂

Oh yeah, since it's your bf that's stealing your wheat thins...a good hand slap with a stern "NO" is definitely in order! haha

There are other schools in FL besides UF, FSU, UM, and USF 😀

What's your boyfriend's title in the Navy? Is there no way he could just get stationed wherever you're going to be (is there even a base near Miami)? I know that's kind of an idealistic view of the military, but I figured they'd rather have him somewhere he wants to go then not have him at all, right? haha, I can just see an ex-Navy guy becoming a house husband...reminds me of that movie with Vin Diesl "The Pacifier." No, I didn't actually watch it, but I did unintentionally see the preview a few thousand times.

And my boyfriend is also going to medical school next year, so unfortunately, no dragging will take place.

Haha this has been an interesting thread... if you're talking about atheletics... well UM does have the edge ... The last few UF / UM football games have been enjoyable to watch - if you're a canes fan. I was at the "miracle comeback" game last time in the orange bowl.... 26 points in one qtr or so lol... I think Jesus of Nazareth was under center for the Canes during the 4th qtr.

As far as med schools go, its trivial - all schools balance out more or less.

Go Canes ;-)

I agree. If I had not gone too UF, I would have attended UNF because it is indeed a very good school. 👍

I didn't intend to flame. I just get tired of how everyone is quick to pick on UF for everything. Although I understand that it is natural to tear down whoever is at the top (no snobbery, just third-party rankings, etc). I agree with Junebug, most people don't want to admit it but they shoot to get into UF, and the other schools serve as safeties. Indeed, there are people who choose to go to the other schools (I have several friends that did for ug) but that is a very small minority. Therefore it seems that some people are very anxious to attack UF, especially the ones that were not accepted, although few will admit that. So the nasty cycle begins where some UF alums will defend our school with, "Don't be pissed b/c you couldn't get in." Then the retort is, "Who wants to go to school with uppity snobs anyway? UF isn't Harvard." blah blah blah.

Matter squashed. I vouch for rosemary triscuits, fatty but very good fiber-ific snacking. Anyone try fiber one cereal? It's like tree bark with artificial sweetener. 😱
