100%! My fiance is getting recruiting duty in Miami now...there's a waitlist for it, but he's getting to bypass the waitlist...so even IF I wanted to consider another school, we would be faced with the possibility of being separated for another 4 years!! That is also the reason I'm trying to transfer from the Boca campus to the Miami campus, otherwise he'll be in Miami and I'll be in Boca. And to confuse you MORE...he'll be overseas during my first whole year of school...so I'll have that entire year to dedicate to 'T ï d ë!!...2nd year and on he'll be in Miami. God...you gotta love the military lifestyle...at least I'll get benefits during med school!! 🙂

haha wow, I'm really sorry to hear that.

That really sucks about your soon-to-be-husband being away for the first year of your marriage. Are you going to get to see him at all? Don't worry...the members of Red Tide and our groupies will do our best to keep you entertained.

No I won't be able to see him...He'll be on a boat waiting for someone to jump overboard (so he can save them). He's going to Iraq, but then leaving and going around the world..so it will be fun for him. I'm "glad" that he'll be away for the first year cuz then I can study more....but I'm disappointed that I'll be meeting all new people and getting to know the city by myself. I'm sure I'll get the "Wow, you're married...where's your husband?" everytime I meet someone...but oh well, I'll get used to it! He left last year and it wasn't too bad, I just studied and partied more. (haha)

WHAT DOES SUCK is that he's leaving in a week and comes back a couple of days BEFORE THE WEDDING and then LEAVES a couple days AFTER THE WEDDING for 2 months!! UGH!!

I'm sure I'll be entertained next year with Red Tide...we may have to increase the frequency of rehearsals though!

I have no idea...I haven't gotten that far into my lender research. My boss' wife graduated from USF and is 2 or 3 years post residency. He said they have payments of $500/month (I have no clue though how much she took out, and how many years they are taking to pay it off).

Speaking of loans...Do people ever say, ok, my first 5 years after residency I'm going to try to pay off a big chunk of my loans? e.g. say you're making 100k after taxes, you put away 40k for living expenses, and save 60k to put towards your loans?

Well, I don't think you want to take 30 years to pay back school loans. You'll end up paying 83049803948x more than you otherwise would have. I think price matters up to a certain extent. If you're talking about a school that costs $11,000/yr vs. a school that costs $40,000 then yes, I think it definitely matters- assuming a) you'll be happy at both places and b) that the more expensive school doesn't give you a kick-ass financial aid package. I've talked to an anesthesiologist whose husband is a dermatologist (in other words, they're doing just fine financially) and she said that besides about 5 schools in the country, she said to go to whatever school is the cheapest. And she does residency interviews in anestesiology at a top medical center, so for her to say where you go really doesn't matter much is a pretty strong opinion. On the other hand, I don't think the difference between $20K/yr and $30K/yr is all that much in the long run considering you can probably pay off your loans in a single year if you are so inclined (unless you're in primary care). So, that's my opinion...take it for what it's worth (which is a lot, at least in my opinion. and you can take that for what it's worth. which is a lot, at least in my opinion, and so on).

Just sent in my withdrawal for FSU--I'm suprised I'm so sad. Maybe its because they were my first acceptance. Its weird, I didn't feel like this when I turned down interviews, but this made me sad 🙁 . (Ok, I'm probably being a bit melodramatic, but still...oh well, I hope my spot goes to someone who doesn't have any acceptances).

I was also sad when I sent my withdrawal from FSU, Runner. Plus it was my undergrad, so I was sad that I wouldn't be spending my med school years there as well.

To answer your question Yrodi....yes, I think a lot of people do live cheaply the first few years and pay back huge chunks of their debt. My fiance and I are going to TRY to live off his salary during residency and put my measley salary (during res.) toward the debt. If we were to do this during a 4 year residency, I'd have alot of my loans paid back. (approximately $120K, at $30K/year)

Are you waitlisted or still waiting to hear back? If you're waitlisted, you'd probably stay on that until you were either offered an acceptance, or the cycle ended. I don't know if you would get a formal rejection.

I was placed on the Ranked List for a possible interview. I was wondering because a friend of mine got rejected today, and was wondering if they rejected everyone that would not receive an interview today, i thought this because I think USF sent out one mass rejection email for the remaining applicants who would not be schedule for an interview. I was not sure since its near the interviewing season and that person was only on the ranked list for about a week, and now got rejected...

Man you really do take your penguins seriously, don't you? If I had a pet penguin (which I also dream about, McMD), I would just take showers with it. A little Pantene Pro-V would make that guano smell just disappear! And since I'm going to be showering with my pet sheep anyway, might as well bring in the penguin, too. He'll get used to the hot water.
