For those of you who have/will have their PGY-1 year approved, how difficult was the process? Because according to the links posted below, I'm seeing that the AOA requires you to do one month of surgery/perioperative care/SICU during their PGY-1 year. However, none of the ACGME programs I've interviewed at have this in their curriculum or even offer this as an elective, so I don't know how I could work this out. Any advice?

As far as I know these are the most recent core requirements for an IM residency to be AOA-approved: https://www.do-online.org/pdf/sir_ogme1core.pdf
(the above was found on the following page: https://www.do-online.org/index.cfm?PageID=sir_postdocabtres42)

I applied for the resolution in for my '06-'07 intern year, but I assume nothing has changed. It was not that hard. You just have to stay on them to get it done. I gave a presentation to my program about osteopathic medicine. Another classmate of mine went to a convention. you also have to write a paragraph about why you couldn't do an AOA residency. Don't worry about not doing surgery. The only thing they really wanted from me was ER. Every person I know who applied for this resolution got it--surgery, IM, PM&R. It's really just some hoops the AOA wants you to jump through, but don't be discouraged and certainly don't let anyone talk you into doing an extra year of residency.
