For private practice, does it really matter where you go for residency?

You would probably get more interest by matriculating at a name school. The interview process is too much a beauty contest and the more medals you can hang around your neck, the more offers you will get.

Doubtful it would affect the time it takes to make partner as you can imagine the other associates in your group would not be too pleased to hear that you are getting a shorter path to bliss.

Academic positions are not in such high demand as to require a lot of extra work to obtain one.

Still, you don't want to go to a substandard program or one with a very bad reputation that is not being worked on. In one of the private hospitals I rotated through, I was running the anesthesia for an AVR/MVR while the attending was sorting through job applicants. Among his mumbling, he clearly stated five times on five separate applications that he "would never consider anyone from the program at XXXXX".

The bottom line is that if you can avoid attending the ACME School of Anesthesiology and Rectal Arts, you will probably be able to follow any of the three paths you have mentioned.
