Hi all,

So due to my sudden employment issue, I'll be moving around July this summer to the NoVA area where my Dad lives. I'll be looking immediately for a vet or two that I can shadow, and was wondering whether any SDN-ers here who lives around this area has had any difficulties in getting some shadowing experience? How many clinics on average did you call before finding a willing vet? My Dad has a cat so I'm considering calling up his cat's vet first, but otherwise I don't have much personal connections. I want to know if this is a relatively easy area to find a place to shadow, or if it's concentrated with aspiring vets and is usually already filled.

Freaking out that I'm moving out of Japan so soon, but excited to FINALLY take a step forward to pursue my dream:xf:

Thanks a ton in advance 🙂

I've never shadowed but have also never had much difficulty finding a job. The Post and Craigslist usually have listings. The bigger specialty/referral places are usually hiring to fill a position or two, many of which are entry level since these positions tend to be fairly high turnover. Check their websites individually since they often don't advertise otherwise. Feel free to pm me if you'd like.

I haven't had any problems finding a SA vet to shadow. I sent about 7 letters six years ago, 2 answered back. I interned with both of them for one summer and after that I chose to stick with the one clinic who also did exotics, had a bigger office, newer equipment, and let me do more hands on stuff. I live in the suburbs of DC though, not in DC. The only difference I can think of is that DC clinics may be a lot smaller, which means they may not like as many people to shadow them.

LA i've never had any luck, but honestly I never really tried either because I have no LA experience at all so i wouldnt even feel comfortable up close and i felt too inexperienced. Also, i chose to go into research to diversify my app so i didnt really have time to get LA experience. If i did want to try for LA experience i can't think of one place to try haha I think I'd need to drive to poolesville or frederick MD.

For LA animal experience (not vet experience), Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary takes volunteers. It's in Poolesville.

Deepwood Animal Hospital (a mixed practice) in Manassas is always willing to allow students to shadow.

Wow, didn't expect a specific name of possible animal clinics! Thank you guys, for the reassuring comments.
BlacKAT33, thanks for replying back on my redundant posts all the time!
