So, I've been accepted to PCOM and it is pretty much where I see myself going, but, my girlfriend who wants to move to where ever I go to school is not fond of Phila. I live in Pittsburgh and we are making a trip out there so she can see the school and the surrounding area, she is also a nurse and will be looking for a job in a hospital out there. So what I am asking is what can I show her to alter her already negative bias of Phila? Apartment complexes, etc?

As a nurse she would have no trouble finding a really good paying job in the area. The other thing about PCOM is that it really isn't in philadelphia. You cross the street and your on the mainline which are a bunch of old towns and several of them with a lot of money. I would say take a drive down montgomery drive in Lower Merion the towns you pass through are all very nice and the further down you go you will see several nice complexes but also Victorian homes that are now apartments. The rent is also alot more reasonable for what you get. I would avoic the two complexes right by school. Lincoln Green and Presidential. If you wanted to see a philly place, go to manyunk. Towns with in 15 minutes of the school are Bala cynwyd, narberth, ardmore, brynmawr. A little bit further but not a bad place to live would be Conshohocken. There are several nice apartment complexes there.

There are many places out in the burbs where you can find a lot more rentals besides the usual apartment complexes, and even some duplexes for a decent amount. I don't know what price range you are looking for, but my wife and I have lived in the area for years, and recently have been looking at rentals for a few months now. There are so many options in healthcare out here that your wife will not have a problem finding a job outside of the city. I have a lot more details so PM me if you want them, and I will help you all I can. Hopefully I will be a 2011 PCOM classmate of yours... I should be getting the letter in a few weeks...

It is indeed possible to be a PCOM student and have little contact with the city.

Many of the hospitals where PCOM sends students for rotations are outside the city. Most of the more popular apartment complexes and residential areas are just outside city limits as well.

If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me. I am in the middle of my 5th year at PCOM and 10th year in Philadelphia. I have lived in many different areas of the city: west philly, manayunk/roxborough, center city, northeast

JPHazelton,

What do you think my chances are for getting an interview at PCOM? Thanks for the input! I've been complete there for about two weeks.

My stats are in my mdapplicants profile.

I think your chances for an interview are strong.

You will need something interesting to say in yoru interview. Though your file looks good you dont have anything that really jumps out at me. Do you have a letter from a DO?

Also, I think moving away from the whole "Im worried about OMM lab...is it just a right of passage or do you really learn stuff" attitude. Doesnt look so good when a candidate comes for an interview and their opinion of the OMM course is just a hoop to jump through on the way to graduation...especially when your whole file is visible to all, including people who interview.

Congrats Bcon!!! Drop a line at the pcom 2011 class thread!

i think our interview group was a lucky one! =)

To the OP....

I'm a Delaware resident who was accepted to PCOM. I plan on taking the train to Philly everyday. There is a stop not too far from PCOM. I'm not a huge fan of Philly myself. Just not the big city type, although I do like the schools there.

There is a HUGE hospital here in Newark, DE called Christiana Hospital. I volunteered there and feel that it would be an awesome hospital for anyone, including your girl, to work in.

Whatever happens, I'll see you in December at the luncheon.

Take care.

I think it's important to make informed decisions. I hadn't intended to be overtly critical of OMM, I just wanted some honest opinions on OMM seeing as I am not yet a med student 🙂 Thanks for your help!

I really like PCOM, and I hope that they interview me. I wanted to understand OMM better so that I can have ansers when I'm asked about it.
