For those that have interviews at Medical college of Wisc...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so..i just got another interview..and i don't know if i should go or not (it's St.Louis University and I'm from Milwaukee, if that helps). would it just be a waste of time and money if i'm already leaning towards mcw? 😕

Is it a better school? How's the tuition? If you are truly interested in that school and don't mind paying to go, why not? After my acceptance, I cancelled my remaining interviews to MSU and NYMC b/c I knew that I would never go to these schools over MCW...I guess that's one thing to ask yourself. Congrats and good luck on the decision!

those at mcw right now, is there any way that you can increase the 550 a month budget (let's say to 700/800 or something like that), or are they really set in stone for stuff like that?
Nope, it's fixed.

or could u say that u need to put a new computer into ur budget (which i know is allowed) and just use the money for something else?
You could, but there really isn't a lot of flexibility in your budget. You CAN take out private loans (and the sky is just about the limit), but those pick up the interest a whole lot faster.

If you think you'd be interested in going there if you got in, then go ahead and go to the interview. There's no sense in regretting it, so go if you think you might like it, but if you're like me, you wouldn't move to St. Louis anyways.

where is the 550 coming from

From the financial aid sheet they give at the interview... it's also on their finacial aid site too. It's the amound allotted to rent and utilities.

I just became complete about a week and a half ago. I have a 32 MCAT and 3.65 GPA. Any chance I will get an interview? I'm also out of state.

Certainly, there's always a chance of getting an interview, but I've heard that MCW puts a lot of emphasis on completion date, especially if you've been placed in the pre-interview hold category. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong. It is pretty late to be complete at this point, though, so I wouldn't be too disappointed if you don't end up getting any interview. Good luck, though!

are those just estimates, i dont understand why that would be a fixed amount

Most definitely fixd because it's in the official budget the school makes, and it's what finanial aid disbursments are based on which I think is way too little because my rent without utilities is double the budget.

Don't worry guys, not all of us live in the lap of luxury like Ashers here. My rent alone is only 1.727 times the $550 allotted to us in the student budget.

My advice: marry quick and marry wealthy. Or I guess you could get a roommate, but they would be less inclined to do your laundry for you.

Also: marry someone that loves to clean. or cleans when he/she gets into a bad mood. that way it's always clean, or if it's not, you just gotta tick them off a little bit.

granted you'll want a comfy couch.

By the way, for those of you that are gonna get married, Chad, our A/V specialist for the M1 lecture hall, has advised me that a comfy couch and a nice garage and VITAL for a man to secure prior to marriage.

ahhhhh..finally i can post again (my comp was sent away for repairs)... i too got the letter with that beautiful golden seal...as for living arrangements, i'm starting to look at getting a condo in the tosa/elm grove area. my dad was the one who suggested that idea to me, so idk if i like the idea of a mortgage during med school, but if i have a couple of roommates, it would be no different than paying rent.

Tosa and Elm Grove are some of the priciest places in the city for houses (don't know about condos). As long as you're okay with making sure your roommates pay (and stay all 4 years!), it might work....

My parents said they'd pay the difference if I lived at the Reserve. Then they were told at orientation they could void my loan, and I could have fines for them paying anything specifically on the budget.

The food is most definitely doable though, if you're like I and eat pb&j every lunch and several dinners. 😀

I heard the Reserve is really nice and would consider living there next year...not sure about the distance though....but I want to find a nice apt building like that...any thoughts? I will definitely need help from my parents for living expenses!

If your parents are not paying then how do you make the payments? Private loans?

I worked in my year off from med school, and I have saving's from when I was a kid. My parents also techinically are "lending" me money in the form of loans or they will, when my money from my year off runs out next year. Completely legal -- they'll have a loan written up. I'm in no way risking losing my financial aid. I haven't taken out a private loan yet, and I'm trying not to, which is why I constantly eat pb&j. Parents are allowed to pay for stuff not on the budget -- like car insurance.

The reserve isn't far ~2 miles. It's one of the closer places to live, and it's full of med students and residents too.

I thought it was pretty nice when I visited. Two reasons we didn't end up moving there:

1). The young woman giving us the tour was a half hour late for our appt. and didn't even mention the inconvenience to us. That can be kind of stressful when you have many, many tours set up for your one day in Milwaukee to pick out a place and you're afraid of getting behind on your schedule.

2). She proceeded to ignore my wife when she found out I was going to be a student at MCW and acted like I was the only person whose opinion mattered, when in fact my wife had as much, if not more, say in where we were going to ultimately end up. We were engaged at the time, and when she heard I was going to start school, the girl actually turned to my wife and said with a snobby tone "So I guess you're gonna be moving in with him?" My wife, bless her soul, was two seconds from strangling her.

I'd recommend checking it out. You should also tour the apt. building we ended up moving into: Underwood Station Apartments. Warning though: there are railroad tracks (that are fairly busy) literally 50 feet from the building. Really nice place other than that though.

Well... that works great for me... I have no money saved that wasn't used for college and I'm not taking a year off!!!

Baller in the house. Mine is only 1.2 times the budgeted amount, and it's for my wife and I. She's employed though, so right now my loans are just for tuition. Of course, she has undergrad loans too.....

I second this notion, although she doesn't have much in the way of family money. She does have a job though....

But I did spend a decent amount of time cleaning the house yesterday (anything to avoid studying, much like right now).

I got a Congrats Letter from my interviewer👍 . Did anyone else get this? If so did you send a thank you note back? Or just nail it to your wall and move on?

I did not get one. I am jealous... 🙁

Really?! I'm sorry, maybe it's on the way. I got mine a few days after my acceptance... or is this not a normal thing to get? I didn't get this from any other school, which made me think MCW was special😀

Ummm... maybe it's not on the way. I received my acceptance the 30th of October and I'm pretty sure my interviewers already forgot who I was. I did get a special not from Mike Istwan on my acceptance letter that said, "myleghurts, welcome to MCW"

i got that "welcome to mcw" note on my acceptance letter too..i'm wondering if everyone did...other than that, i do have a question. when is everyone starting to look for housing??

also, i just sent in my deposit!! i'm very excited 🙂

so...anyone planning on commuting?

happy turkey day to everyone 😀

When is the deadline for the secondary??

also, how many personal LORs do they require (besides the pre-med committee composite LOR?)

To be honest, I wouldn't turn in the secondary at this point. The best you can hope for is probably a waitlist interview. I'm really not sure about the deadline but they evaluate files based on completion date and getting complete now is probably certain doom.

I remember them having a few different options for LOR's. I think you can either have the committee or have two from science (biology, chemistry, physcis) and one non-science. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about it though if you have a composite.

Waitlist interview? What do you mean? They have ALREADY filled all their slots??😕 :scared:

I am actually waiting to hear back from MCW in regards to their secondary application because I'm currently awaiting AMCAS processing. My premed advisor has sent out composites to all the med schools (MS and DO) that I told her I am applying to. I hope theyre not ALREADY filled ... tha's ... crazy :scared:

A few current students will probably comment but MCW hands out a significant amount of their accpetances to early applicants. They fill the class and then defer people to the waitlist. They will then interview people telling them they are interviewing for a spot on the waitlist. This occurs in February or March maybe? I'm not sure.

so..i just got another interview..and i don't know if i should go or not (it's St.Louis University and I'm from Milwaukee, if that helps). would it just be a waste of time and money if i'm already leaning towards mcw? 😕

I turned down an acceptance at SLU for MCW. You should drop that interview and stay at MCW... 😀

Hey i gotta question...what kind of immunizations do we need for mcw and where can we take them???

I have the same question. The other schools I was accepted to require the Heppatitus (sp) B along with the other regular ones you should have gotten as a child. I expect them to start sending loads of info on everything sometime in the spring.

go to your doctor now and get your hep vaccines and mmr and TB test while you are still under someone else's insurance.

Are people in milwaukee angry?

Pretty dang close. Honestly, it's November 26th. You can't be complete before December. I wouldn't bother with MCW. They're probably already offering waitlist interviews (the class filled in January last year).

Since apparently there are no other future commuters, I have another question.

Is a laptop worth it?

can the tb test be 10 months old??

can the tb test be 10 months old??
nope. don't worry about the TB test - they're free, and they do them during orientation week. Get your other vaccines taken care of though, and try to get a physical within six months of the beginning of August, if you're still on your parents' insurance.

wow, i didnt know that, im disappointed now =/ 😡

So, Prowler..this is directed at you 🙂

First, do you know if they've filled all the slots yet? I interview December 8th.

Second, will you be leading students around that day?

I can't wait to get there! MCW has had me excited since day 1..

I doubt Prowler will be giving tours on 8 Dec because he's already given one, but I will. I highly doubt the class will be filled, but since I haven't seen Mr. Istwan around to ask recently, I can't be sure. Last year I they filled after the 1st interview in January, so I bet it'll be similar to that.

Like Ashers said, I'd be shocked if the class were already full, so think positive. And no, I won't be giving any tours, but I'll probably be at the social the night before.

I submitted my secondary back in August and have not received any notification from MCW. I am an average applicant. Come on, MCW! Give me an invite.

stay in contact! if you wait until you get a rejection, it'll be far too late.

So, if I was complete with my secondary online about a few weeks ago, should I call and check on my app? Just wasn't sure how long it took to hear whether or not i'd be offered an interview...
