I was bored on a transpacific flight so I started working on it in midair! Must have typed literally for 30 - 60 min straight. In the end I had about 10 pages double spaced about my life. I spent a week or two editing it down to the character limit and fitting it towards dentistry.

But I have been thinking what I should write in my personal statement for about a year.

I don’t know about three days, but if you start working, it does come together fast.
First, decide what you want to convey through your statement. Will it be a life story, sequence of events or whatever format you choose. Search online for some samples.
(Brainstorm): Start with putting your thoughts as bullet points, use your resume or life story story to express how and why you began to pursue dentistry (did something or someone have any influence on you, etc.).
Summarize your accomplishments, work, leadership, honors, volunteering; any other activities, clubs or simply whatever makes you "YOU", and how are you different from any other pre-dents.
Brainstorm for a few days, these thoughts don’t have to be connected in the beginning. At first it will look like a bunch of randomness, and that’s fine. Then, you will have to create some transitional thoughts that will glue that randomness together, this should take another day or two.
After you have an initial draft, start editing and you will get even more thoughts and ideas, that should take no more than a few days as well.

Try to ask your old English professor to help you edit your draft or any English major. I personally used my campus writing services to edit my first draft and then I got my grammar, punctuation and contents checked by my old English professor (he knew me very well).

I roughly spent ten days total (1-3 hours per day).
I am not a native English speaker (started speaking when I was 16), so for most of you guys, one week should be enough.

Always write more than required, as you will remove much of unnecessary wordiness later when you edit.

What does it matter how long others spent on their personal statements? You have a couple of months before the cycle even opens, so just set aside some time for it. A week should be plenty...

More than a week, I worked on it everyday for that week and plus few days. I'm a slow writer and wrote several drafts before the final version.

It took me a few weeks because I am pretty horrible at that kind of writing. I ended up trashing once or twice and beginning again from scratch. Also, keep in mind that when you send it to someone for editing it can take a few days before they get back to you.

I thought about my personal statement off and on for a year. It took one solid day of writing (and that includes the additional essays needed for Texas applications).

took me two days - it's kinda like knitting a sweater... first day was sorting out all the stringy ideas and mental yarn that had accumulated in my head, then stopped and waited until the next day so my mind could shift into a slightly different gear. had a few people read it, they liked it but it felt itchy to me so i ripped it apart and put it together again for a second draft. this second one feels like it fits... don't knit the sweater just because you think the adcoms will like it... do what comes naturally to you.

and don't get your mom to write it... it's about time you knew how to write your very own paper if you're applying for dent school right? hahaaaaa

I took a couple days to write it, then let my mom (an editor) and a couple other people read it, then edited it, then that was it. 😀

I wrote loads of drafts over a couple of months, but was not happy with any of them. Then one day I woke up and knew exactly what I wanted to write, and did it in a day.
