Whooooo, you've given us matches and lighter fluid. We will see what everyone does with it.

I (and a lot of other people) are familiar with the disappointing numbers on this legendary table.

Wow, another race thread! You are such a creative premed!

This topic has been discussed numerous times. Does the search function not work? :bang:

The reason most of us become annoyed with race threads is because there are several on SDN and they usually turn into a world-class p***ing contest and the mods shut it down. There is really no point in starting another one, since it will degenerate very quickly. Even if we could have an intelligent discussion, some ***clown trolling the forums would make inflammatory comments and the thread would be locked.

... oh no not again. please close this for our sanity :lock:

Im a mediocre albino (as white as they come), but I still managed to get in...take that AA!!!!!!!

Minority applicants have differences (hydrophobic regions) not generally accepted by the public (hydrophillc micro-environment of the cell). The problem is they usually have difficulties completing the application process (protein folding) successfully and thus tends to come together (misfolded protein aggregation) and express their views. The people (Bip-dependent proteins) who believe that there is not a problem with the system discrimminating against others quickly come in and joins this heated discussion (UPR). Until the moderators (Activated TF) take notice of this flame war and tries to diffuse the situation by keeping everyone civil (transcription of chaperons) or closing the thread (apoptosis).

okay not really inflammatory.. but i tried...

I would hve contributed to the last one, but you guys don't play nice and got it shut down.

I spent a couple hours yesterday afternoon trying to argue this issue and it went nowhere. I'm not getting sucked into it again.

Funny how the "No Race" category has most of the highest marks.

I am definitely showing my nerdy side; I laughed at that one.

Dear Nervous White Kids,

Here's a helpful guide to interpretting the data presented by sylvanthus.

Step 1: Click on the link (see first post in thread)
Step 2: Exclaim "OH NOES LOWER STATS!"
Step 3: Take note of the number of white matriculants out of the total.
Step 4: Realize that "your" spot isn't being taken/given away/(fill in relative injustice here).
Step 5: Stop posting threads like this one.

Sincerely,

TyrKinase

Actually it's Asians who are primarily screwed over by affirmative action.

(emphasis mine)

Fair enough.

White matriculants/White applicants * 100 = ~44%
Asian matriculants/Asian applicants * 100 = ~42%

You're right, there's a huge, shocking, totally unfair disparity there.

Let's open it up, shall we? Asian-Americans comprise approximately 5% of the US population as of 2005 (source). And yet, they make up 19.9% of medical school matriculants.

Helpful hint: see step #5.

Very nice TyrKinase. That 1-5 step guide should be stickied.

Have you guys ever stopped to think that maybe the reason people repeatedly post these threads is because it is a genuine concern to them? If you don't like the threads, by all means, stay out of them. Coming on here whining about the threads does nothing to eliminate them and just bumps them back to the top.

Maybe I should post a 5 step guide to how to stay out of threads you do not want to be involved in?

That's all interesting, but irrelevant since there are no quotas. You aren't just competing with those of your own race for admission spots. If there were quotas you would be absolutely correct since the acceptance rates by race are roughly the same. But the fact is, you only need a 25.8 (on average) to get into med school if you are black and a 32.1 (on average) if you are Asian. I have no problem if people want to make public policy arguments for why this HUGE disparity is acceptable, but please don't pretend that it doesn't exist at all and that people who are upset over the differing standards are being irrational.

I agree. I can understand how people could think that Affirmative Action is unfair, especially if they are struggling at getting into a school. They may think that the only thing that seperates them from an acceptance is their race. That being said, there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it, so you have no choice but to do your best and see where that takes you. Its not like this whole affirmative action thing was sprung on you overnight, you knew the kind of numbers you needed to have to get into medical school. Nonetheless, I do have some sympathy for people who are upset about these things.

Riddle me this, Batman. How can bytchin' about this topic change your chances of getting accepted into medical school?

Additionally, what argument/insight could you provide that hasn't be expressed a 1000 times on SDN?

It's an exercise in futility. Go watch some URM porn. Maybe it'll make you feel better...

Pretty much every topic has been discussed at some point in the history of SDN. Do you, then, advise us to just stop posting threads?

The only way things in the admissions process can change is to bring the knowledge that race IS a factor in admissions to as many people as possible. So, sure, this thread will probaby die off and not do jack in changing things, but perhaps a few more people will realize just how important race is in admissions.

Again, if you don't like the thread, stay out.

-To answer your original question, I have been accepted so it wont change a thing with me. I just want the facts and data to get out there so people can discuss it, that is all.

What in the hell can you do about race being a factor if it even were? What can anyone do? You cannot change race, or whatever race people perceive you as. That's why everyone is saying that this is useless point to bring up. It just breeds hostility and makes a whole lot of posters look like ignorant honkeys.

I. Said. Good. Day.

Nonetheless, I do have some sympathy for people who are upset about these things.

Do you have sympathy for those of us who log on to get helpful information regarding medical school, but are subjected to these b.s. race-baiting threads?

This is HUGE reason why I don't donate to SDN.

What is that even supposed to mean?

Exactly.

The data are already available on AMCAS, so there really isn't any need to point it out here. Additionally, these kinds of threads are an invitation to engage in flame wars, and they are absolutely done to death. Seriously, do a search on race and admissions on these forums and you'll see what I mean. Posting a "race and admissions" thread is a little like advertising Pepsi - yes, it's mathematically possible you'll reach someone who hasn't heard of the drink, but it's pretty damn unlikely. Further, when you post a new topic, there's even a helpful little table showing all of the related topics, showing you just how many of these threads there are. It's *why* we encourage people to think before posting repetitive, contentious threads.

Uhm, you didn't get accepted in an MD program. You were accepted into a DO program so what effect does this AMCAS data have on you?

🙄

Best line ever.

Also, to the person who commented that the only reason she doesn't donate to SDN is AA threads--

EDIT: Also, I'm Black--in case that's relevant or was going to guide anyone's response to me in anyway.

-Done. 😀

Obama is going to mess up healthcare and AA will be even worse for the white man. We can elect a black president, so why do we need AA? We have the most legitimate of proof now.

The election of Obama will be followed by the immediate enslavement of White people. Personally, I'm excited. :hardy:
