Foreign Veterinary Graduates

HiDoes anyone knows a state which doesn't requires an ECFVG certificate or can issue a permit to practice veterinary medicine pending ECFVG
Concerning your question to get a license without having the ECFVG.
There is New York State Veterinary Board, Please see their web site, they can give a license without finishing the ECFVG, BUT you have to give them your veterinary certificate and transcript from your country ( translated in English) but to qualify for this you have to have 5 years of Academic education AND one year of clinical education ,so total of 6 years of veterinary education also you have to have a Green Card.
you can get more information on their page http://www.op.nysed.gov/vetlic.htm
you can also print the forms on their site, you can call them and ask if you can be entitled for a license.
AlsoI think that Massetchustes ( Boston ) Board they give a limited license so you can practice under another vet's supervision untill you pass your CPE.
Good Luck

hi... im currently in the us...
but ill be going out of country to finish the school...
now... i know ecfvg is changing few things here and there...
the test format is constantly changing....
well, that's no problem for me...
my main concern is that what would happen in next 4-5 years...
ive heard in medical & dentistry field,
america pretty much closed the doors on international students...
how likely are chances of this to happening to international vet students...
will they close the door on us?
what do you guys think?
much love,
eugene
Never heard of that and I don't think this will happen.
Dear Roci
I liked your approach for answering the queries or responding the mail! Its true many foreign students are willing to take BCSE or Navel material to study but seldom get the right direction to work towards.
One more thing to suggest keep cheking your mails on this site! best wishes for your TOEFL!
I think you should enlist the material you worked on for NAVEL.
Tha would be helpful to others.
Thanks

HI!
I haven't been checking this forum for a long time because I wasn't getting answers at the beginning. Today I openned and I found many messages. What tells me, that there are many foreign veterinarians out there trying to get the licence but with not much help available.
I got my degree in Peru in 2000. I worked for a while there and then moved to US. I took ESL classes for about 2 years and after that I started working as a technician. I'm enrolled in the ECFVG program but I'm still in step 2 (I haven't been able to get 26 in the speaking section of the toefl yet 🙁 but I am really close)
At the same time studying for the boards. I have compiled all the information about all we need to do about requirements and forms in every step and for taking the NAVLE. Most of the information is available in the AVMA web page and NAVLE page. I also have some information about the books we need.
Are you still in Peru? Did you pass the TOEFL? or Are you giving the boards soon? I really would like to start a group of study with all the people that is planning to take the boards.
Let me know, and tell me your name
I hope to hear from you soon UPCH

Yesterday I got my results for the last exam "CPE". I'm happy to say " I DID IT "
I got my certificate. Now what?? I've to think about that. BUT for all of you who just started or half way there. I want to give you and idea about me and where I was and how I did it. I hope this help.
I came to the U.S in 2001 and CAN NOT make a one single English sentience, so my English was bad, really bad. The reason for that is I learned the vet medicine in different language and all what we had for English is one small class a year. I'm telling you this to give you an Idea that nothing is impossible. You may not be good enough now but you will be if you want too.
I'm not the smartest guy ever, I'm positive most of you guys are smarter than me, so if I did it then you can.
When I first came to the states I start working with animals. I was cleaning stalls and taking care of lots of animals in Animal Sanctuaries, which was as good as it gets for some one has a vet license from outside the U.S and hardly speaks English. So for you who are out there and asking about what to do while trying to get a vet license? Do one thing. Work with animals. Anywhere, clinics, sanctuary, even dairy farms. This is important to stay in touch with what you have learned also give you a good access to vets who come and treat this animals, and you learn a lot.
Best job you can get is vet assistant. This will include cleaning kennels and doing dirty things but it will give you a great access to medicine and you learn a lot as you are earning money for living. If you think you can't do the vet license soon. Get the vet technician license; this gives better chance for hands on experience. All what you need for that is pass the national veterinary technician licensing exam. Which is as easy as the BCSE? 200 computer questions with multi answer system.
So in 2003 I start studying for the veterinary technician exam. It was the hardest thing ever trying to open the dictionary and translate every other word. but in 6 months I was able to pass the exam and become licensed veterinary technician. This was a great step because now I can go and work in a vet hospital earn more money and learn lots of things everyday. and I did. I was very lucky to work with a surgical clinic with great board certified surgeons.
I recommend specialty clinics, like surgery or emergency, these clinics will teach you the most and the best.
In August 2006 I decided that it's time. I started my vet license program. Starting with TOEFL, BCSE, NAVLE and then CPE. So almost 2 years later It was over. this journey was very stressful it gave me a gift along the way. it was a stomach ulcer. now that I'm no longer have to stress I hope it will finally heal.
So, doctors, don't give up or underestimate your selves. if you were able to get a vet degree from elsewhere then you can do it in the U.S. if I did it then trust me anyone of you can.
Unfortunately I can't discuss anything about the CPE exam. just one note. Follow the manual. and don't hurry. You will get it 5-6 months before you can do the test so you will have a lot of time to go through it. Just concentrate on the steps one by one.
Also go out and find equine and bovine vets and work with them, give them a free hand just to learn, even in the weekends. The last 6 month I was working full time job as a technician 4 days a week 10 hours a day and I was working for free with equine vets and bovine vets for 2 full day a week and had only one day to study. So I had no life. But this is the way to do it, for the CPE you have to get first hand experience with small and large animals. This give you an idea how much time I was able to use for studying, the things you learn when you are working are the things you will remember in the exams especially the CPE.
I recommend that you join the yahoo CPE Group. There are tons of materials and great people who can give you advices and references to study from. This goes for NAVLE and CPE candidates here is the link.

I will be checking the Forum and help as much as I can. Please no private messages, I will answer questions in the forum for every one to read.

I don't know how to help you on this one, you need an immigration attorney. Go and spend 100 $ and get a very good opinion. once you know what to do then you can just do it your self. there is always a work visa but those are already gone. there is a limit of 55000 a year and your chance for this year is gone. this visa require having an employer that is welling to hire you. you have a good advantage by being in the U.S which alows you to do better search.
Do not Stay in the U.S illegally, this will destroy your future chances of coming back to the U.S.
if you can get internship or residant status. then you can maybe get a student visa. like I said go to an attorny for one hour appointment and explain your situation and he/she will give you the best advice. it won't cost you more than 100$. it will be worth it.
also check the qualifications for visas on the http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis . write in the serch filed Student visa, or any visa and you will get all info you need to be qualified for visas.
there are websites that may contain more info and can help you more than this fourm . try this website

To get a vet tech license you have to provide one of two things either a graduation from a vet tech school or a 5 years experience as a veterinary assistant. in my case I didn't have either, but i have a vet license from a different country with 6 years experience. I called the veterinary board in my state and i told them that I would like to apply for the veterinary technician board exam "200 questions. done twice a year". I told them about my qualification. they said it's more than enough "more like over qualified'. I did the test 3 months later and then I had to do an open book state exam you do it home and send it in , mostly about the vet laws.. Then I got the license. it's really easy. Check the department of health, licensing department in your State. you should know all the answers. There is no need to have any license to work as assistant, although you can have license, the same way but if you want to do it you may as well do the technician. Some technicians I knew worked as assistants for 5 years and then applied for the exam.Every state has different laws .in my state, vet tech can do most of everything except, making a diagnosis, prescribing drug, doing surgery. you can do lots of procedures without supervision of veterinarian and more with the veterinarian, for example you can induce anesthesia when there is vet in sight view of you and the animal.. when you apply for the exam as technician they will mail you a book of all this rules, Don't worry about it though, when you work in a clinic they will tell you what you can do.I think you are over qualified, you can easily work in any hospital, a full year of internship should be enough to get you an assistant job for now.I hope this can help.
so go online and find the place in your state that gives licenses and call them and ask. You should get to the veterinary board people who can help you. requirement might vary from state to state.
As far as work. for now find anything to stay alive and then search for work in vet hospitals. look in adds in the newspaper and google search using your city name and veterinary assistant words and the word job.
also search for close by vet clinics and go to them one by one and give them your resume. this might work some time.
there is no way any one can tell you how much you might get paid it's diffrent from place to place but Iexpect minimum wage 8-10 $ an hour.. to start.
Put your thinngs in order. what is the most important thing and go on. and do it step by step . don't ruch . I was in the U.S for 2 ears before I did the technician license and 5 years before I started the vet license.. doing it fast will not help.

I recomend one book you can find it on www.amazon.com
the book called Mosby's Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians (Paperback) this is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Mosbys-Comprehensive-Review-Veterinary-Technicians/dp/0323052142/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214831124&sr=8-2
2-how long does the exam take timefor preparing?
This depends on your current knowlage of medicine, English and termenology. the exam has just been done in June 20th I think. so next time will be 6 months from now. this is plenty of time to register and study.
3-please tell me more about the exam how it like(in computer or paper+focus for which part )?
the exam that I did it was on paper but just like the computer exam it's question with 4-5 answers you have to pick one. it was 200 questions and you have 4 hours as I remember. it was very easy. there is a book you can find also on Amazon.com
Review Questions and Answers for Veterinary Technicians (3rd Edition, Book & CD-ROM) (Paperback).
here is the link :
http://www.amazon.com/Review-Questions-Answers-Veterinary-Technicians/dp/0323019269/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214831124&sr=8-1
this will help you get an Idea about what type of questions you will get. you don't have to know every single one. some questions were too stupid to be in a book.
4-did you prepar just for 3 months?that will be nice that means it is esy?please more explain for this point.
yes just read the book couple of times and the question book will give you an idea about your level. study first and then answer the questions . this will give you an idea about you weak spots so you can study them more.
5-questio"200ns. done twice a year". please i didnt understand this sentense............did u mean there are twice appointment for VTNE?if this what did you mean please tell me when?
the exam done only two times a year so you have to wait 6 months before you can do it again. and it has 200 questions.
6- a full year of internship should be enough to get you an assistant job for now........................would you please tell me about internship what does mean?please all thing about it
this info was for a dr. who done a year of internship. does not apply to you. but this Dr. has enroled in a university internship program and trying to find a job. i was just asuuring him that he shouldn't have a problem finding a job.

What are different between EXTRNSHIP and INTRENSHIP?
Thanks
Internship usually a long time commitment for work like 6 month to 1 year. most of the time it's paid a small wage like 20.000 -30.000 $ a year. so you are an employee. this is harder to get and find than the externship. it's usually offered in vet schools and some big hospitals.
this require qualifications and like I said might hard to find. but you can try. for more info check this website.
http://www.virmp.org/virmp/
Externship is short term unpaid position. it can be done as daily for X number of days or weeks or it can be done as one day a week,,,, etc.. this is easy to get . Because hospitals like having a free help. they need you and you need them. they don't pay you. but you learn. this is good if you have a job in small animal hospital so you can do externship in large animal hospital in your day off or weekend just for knowledge.
this doesnt require qualifications. because you are there just to learn.
congratulations dvmjakish, you deserved to pass the CPE. best wishes
Thank you for your time and help
I heard if i want to work in hospital as veterinarian that does not needs pass any exams(navle) especially like my situation(i have citizenship) just i will be under supervisor ...the point for that is because i dont want to practice my own business.......is this true?

HOW ARE YOU ........I HOPE EVRYTHING ALL RIGHT WITH YOU
PLEASE WOULD YOU TELL ME HOW I CAN APPLY FOR VTNE(STEP BY STEP)AND WITH DETAILS

first you need copies that are certified and translated to English of your License or degree from your home country. once you have that ready then you need to call the veterinary board of your state and ask them to send you an application for the vetrinary technician licensing exam. they will ask you also to send it back with a check for the exam fee.
here is the information you need for contact:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
For VTNE application, contact: Professional Credential Services, Inc. (PCS), P.O. Box 198689, Nashville, TN 37219-8689. Phone: 1-877-887-9727. Deadline for application is 60 days prior to the date of the exam. An applicant must have an AVMA accredited degree in veterinary technology.
Examination Dates:
VTNE - third Friday in January and June. The exam is given in Harrisburg.

The normal requiremnet is a completion of 2 year vet tech school (AVMA Accredited school), but there are exceptions.
if you are not lucky your state might not accept aother cases like a foreign DVM graduate.
best way is to call them and explain your case. tell then that you are a DVM and have X # of years as experiance and see if they accept you. if they don't then you can't do it and you have to live in a diffrent state where you can do that .
