Supposing the letter is the same in terms of content as an equally reputable medicine doc, would the FP doc's letter be a disadvantage? I have two strong letters from gas docs already.

I am in a similar situation, I honored FP and got a letter but I also ended up with a great letter from OB which I didn't honor. I went with submitting OB along with Surgery, Anesthesia and Peds. I just thought that a letter from an FP might not be as strong in some people's minds on the comittees, at least the older folks. FP is fairly new and not well respected in many circles, especially on the East Coast.

With all due respect, do you honestly believe that submitting an FP LOR instead of a Medicine LOR is going to be "THE" determining factor on where you go???? In the grand scheme of boards, grades, honors, research, etc....IMHO it doesn't make a hell of beans difference. As long as the rec is strong and shows that you are a hard-working, personable individual even outside of anesthesia means that it is worth submitting. Hope this helps and good luck! 🙂

I agree with SED8. I submitted a group of letters last year that represented my core rotations. I had a letter from my DME at the hospital I did the bulk of my rotations, she was an FP. I had one anesthesia, one surgeon, and one neurologist.

During one of my interviews, I was specifically told that it was nice to see some variety in the letter-writers because it showed I was a good student even when I was doing specialties I wasn't necessarily gung-ho about. Think about it, after a while it doesn't mean so much to have 4 anesthesia letters that say the same glowing things about you. They'd rather see that you are an all around student who learned what you should have during medical school.

That's just my opinion.
