Hey, for those of you who recently matched or are presently OPH residents....

What level of communication would you suggest be appropriate between applicants, programs, and phone calls on the applicants behalf? Is this sort of thing looked down upon? or can a couple of follow up letters or phone calls expressing your interest in the program be a good thing?

Usually applicant-to-program communication doesn't help much. At many programs, for example, the applicant is ranked at the end of the interview day.

However, program-to-program communication may have impact, but this is better expressed as an outstanding letter of recommendation from the faculty.

Thanks for the input Dr. Doan. Do you think a letter of recommendation from your home department's chair or PD is necessary? Or would it be adequate to have strong letters from people who know you better? And finally, of the 3 letters we get to send, do you think it would adviseable to have them all come from oph's or is it good to mix it up?

I think you need one from a core clerkship per instructions from sfmatch. Otherwise, the other two can be from ophtho faculty. You don't need a letter from the PD or chair. You need good letters from people who know you. Good luck! 😉
