I have a question/comment
for those of you who started off with ~2.0 and by senior year ended up with ~4.0 did you guys go to a low-medium tier school? I say this because its hard to believe that someone at stanford, berkeley, yale etc. could start off with a 2.0 and end up getting 4.0's by the time they graduate. My theory is that if you go to an "average" state school and slack off your freshman year, with a lot of hard work you can become that ~4.0 student which is fantastic. I just don't feel like people who are getting 2.0s at harvard could ever get >3.8 in 1 semester. i hope i made my point.
No flame war intended

Why?
because you can't just work the hardest and be the best at a school like harvard. There are some insanely smart people at harvard who work hard too and i just don't feel like someone getting 2.0s at harvard has the ability to get a 3.8s (at Harvard). Those people who get 3.8s at harvard would NEVER get a 2.0, EVER. It just wouldn't happen and here's why.
i believe even those 3.8ers at harvard can find ways to get through tough times and not slip up to 2.5s, even if a parent dies or something tragic happens.
If you know someone who started off with a <2.5 at yale, princeton, duke etc.. and ended up getting 3.8+ by the time he/she graduates please share but i don't think it could happen.
Sorry if i offend anyone, i'm not intending to.
i dont think there's such a thing as someone who tries "really hard" and gets a 2.0 at any school! that person simply doesnt know how to study and work hard. everybody and anybody can get a 4.0 at any school...it just needs hard work and determination.
But what if a fairly intelligent Harvard student gets to college, and loses all motivation for school and gets a 2.0. But then he decides to get his studies into gear, and starts to work hard again.
I agree that a student who actually tries and still gets a 2.0 will probably not end up making a 3.8. But I think a lot of times when people get really low grades, it has more to do with them just not even caring than with them being inherently incapable of obtaining good grades
Doesn't matter how smart you are, if you stop going to class and you don't read the material, you're not going to do well.I have a hard time believing that someone who had the ability to get >3.8 at harvard would ever get ~2.0. (s)he's too smart to ever get a 2.0.

All it would take is a drop in motivation. Which is why it doesn't happen. But it could.
I think you overrate them, but in general yes.Its humanly possible yes...but not likely to happen...they are too smart and realize that a 2.0 in a single semester will severely hurt their cum.

Keep the aggro off of me, I'll throw the heals out.Okay you tank the aldehyde synthesis and I'll go for the estera.
i know sooo many ppl with 4.0's but are complete *****s and many ppl who are geniuses with 3.0's. the only difference between these ppl is how much they care to study. all that matters is how hard you work. i agree with you though...intelligence would make it easier to get the 4.0. nevertheless, hard work is much more important.I respectfully disagree. I do not have the cognitive ability even if i studied all day long and all night long to be one of the ~6 people who got 4.0s at harvard. this is an oversimplification.
that 3.95 just wont cut it. have you considered entering the trucking business? im sure you would succeed at that.4.1

many many absences (albeit medically excused) and failure to make up all of the work. she wanted to fail me but i begged shamelesslyHow'd you manage a C in freshman orientation? Aren't first year seminars usually easy As?
