I finally joined this forum [which I LOVE], although I've lurked it for a little bit 😉

I'm a freshman/almost sophomore at Lansing Community College right now, transferring to Michigan State either next Fall or Spring! Anyone else from this area!?

Sometimes it's really hard to find friends around here who are as focused in school as me or interested in the things I'm into... Can't wait to transfer to State to join some of their clubs!

I also have other questions! I've worked as a veterinary assistant at a small practice for 3 years or so now. I don't know how else to describe work except I truly, deeply love my job. Cliche at times, but every day is like going to school and my mind is just a sponge in that place! The veterinarians I work with explain EVERYTHING to me and always ask for input, it's just perfect and I've had the opportunity to grow immensely from my experiences there. Also, we work quite a bit with other veterinarians in/around the area and MSU.

Yet at the same time, if I plan to apply to vet school within the next 3-4 years (I really want to take my time & enjoy college), I'm really worried I need to get some more diverse animal experiences under my belt. I'll have had a tremendous amount of small animal experience (we also work incredibly close with Ingham County Animal Control and Mid Michigan Cat Rescue supplying almost all of their veterinary needs), but will have no equine or exotic medicine to offer. I love the stability and every day learning my current job offers, but want YOUR input on whether or not I need to move on ... just got that lump in my throat feeling even thinking about it...

I've been dreaming this dream for so long and I just want to get it right!

Thank you so much for reading, looking forward to being in touch with all of you on here!!!

I'm from MI, I think that there is literally a handful of people on this forum that are fellow Michiganders.

I'm not from MI, but I go to MSU! Love the place, minus the cold.

I'd try somehow to get some varied experience - From my experience, loads of hours at a SA hospital with a few hours at a zoo and general LA experience just weren't enough to make OSU happy (i'm not bitter...). Maybe try shadowing at first, until you get some experience then maybe you could get just as nice of a job somewhere else?
I still refuse to give up my amazing job at the SA hospital I work at - I have guaranteed hours whenever I come home from school for breaks and really supportive bosses - I'm just going to have to find a way to get varied experience while keeping my job.

I've certainly begun looking into shadowing to gain LA experience and I appreciate your honest answer of what OSU didn't accept (I'm sorry by the way...). The reasons you've stated are why I love my job at my SA clinic so much too! No matter what, I'll always be guaranteed hours and I'm happy & challenged along the way. In a perfect world, I could gain LA experience hours without necessarily losing my assistant job. We'll see how this goes! Thanks.

Boo the cold indeed! I grew up in Delaware; my family and I moved to Michigan about 8 years ago -- STILL not used to it! At least the east coast is getting all the snow this year 😉

Originally from Michigan (Go Blue!) but haven't lived there in quite a while.

Wait, who we booing? Michigan or MSU? I'm all for booing Michigan XD I bleed greeeeeeen!

My poor mother is in MD buried in snow - i'm actually glad to be in MI for once!

 I was booing the Lions. I guess I didn't make that clear. such a pathetic excuse for a football team, I wonder if they know that the whole country laughs at them
