do you guys experience frustrations in getting the classes you want every semester? like wanting to take a bunch of classes that somehow all overlap times or are full.. seems like it happens to me all the time and it doesnt help in deciding which sciences to take.

is this something that happens at every school?

Nope, I'm good. Double-major and priority registration as a senior. Plus, it's the quarter system where I am. If it's not going to fit into my schedule one term, I can take it the next with no problems (assuming it's not a sequence).

Ah, so glad I never had to go through this.

At my undergrad, folks in the honors program got first dibs on classes throughout the university before the regular students. As a freshman in honors I got to register 2 weeks before the regular kids (even the seniors).

Same at my institution. This privilege alone made the honors program worth it.

This probably won't apply to you but at my school there is a 15% tuition deadline a few days before classes start. If you don't pay 15% by the deadline you have to drop your classes. So if a class is full before the deadline there will usually be a couple of seats open after the deadline.

Oh **** - doubled this on CC haha. Um again, besides the honors kids - I'm sure it happens to everyone at least once or twice..

PS. very jealous of all you honors kids getting to register even before the seniors?! That's outrageously awesome... lucky... 😡

At my school honors kids dont get priority... although there are some classes opened exclusively to those in the honors college. I just entered as a freshman; what a nightmare. For the freshmen, it depends on when you registered for orientation; the sooner the better. Lucky for me, I was in the first orientation rotation.

Another thing about my school (not sure if this is typical of all schools or not) is that freshmen only sign up for the first semester, so I get to go through this all over again around November. 😱

What I cant stand is that I can already tell that a number of profs teach pre-med courses only at 9:05AM MWF, with tests on Thursday nights. So if you want to take more than one pre-med course per semester, you're f/cked.

Yeah Honors program is awesome for this. Also being an athelete gives you priority registration as well.

Getting into the classes wasn't that bad but getting into the lab sections with the hours that worked with my schedule was almost impossible until I had junior registration status.

Loved this, also if you need a lab most of the time the AD can either get one created in a good time slot or they will move the lab to one.

so you guys dont have problems of a lot of the classes you want all overlapping times in the schedule so that you can only pick 1? i experience that more than classes being full actually. is it just my school?

I've had a couple issues with classes overlapping. I ended up taking classes over the summer to resolve this.

I am both of these things yet my school doesn't offer priority registration. Its just by credit hours. It doesn't matter if you are in the honors program or an athlete, just that you have a million and a half AP/IB credits

At my scool registration is just done by credit hours, and the registrar's office will usually let you join a full class if it's required for your major.

Yeah I luckily came in with a lot a credit hours. Idk how it is at other schools, but at mine if a class is full you can approach the prof and ask to be allowed into the class b/c you need it for some reason and often times they will open up a slot for you.

AP credits, honors program, quarter system, and senior status have me running as a 6th year student. I register 2 days early compared to the 4th year students. Came into institution with sophomore status- never have felt the pain.

well ain't you just special...

Ugh I do. I am a double major (English Lit and Bio) so even though my school is small and I am in Honors it didn't help because space wasn't the issue the class timing was. I wish I could say I found some miraculous way to work this out but even with summer classes it still cost me an extra semester of school. yuck. Oh well I figure someday I am going to look back and think of some use for the extra degree I am getting...lol

scheduling can be dreadful. It is especially bad for labs where seats are very limited. I was actually talking to a course coordinator for organic chemistry who said he runs the class as the department head tells him to. Tell me if this makes any sense... approximately 1400 students sign up for orgo 1, nearly 1000 make it to orgo 2, there are 600-700 seats in lab... It isn't right to run a lab that arguably 99% of students taking the class need the lab as well but offer substantially less seats. The whole system is backed up to to make amends for mistakes of the past, they simply reserve one lab section for graduating seniors who couldn't fit the class in earlier in their career instead of increasing course offering or reducing lecture size. Clearly I got to a very large university but have heard of scheduling difficulties from friends at small, private colleges as well.

The bright side of going to a mid sized (8000) private is that required classes are well staffed. Also, in demand science electives are usually held for majors, so as a Bio major I can get any bio class I want once I'm an upper classman.

A caveat to that is my liberal arts requirements can be filled by many classes and some are definately easier/more interesting than others. So, as a Junior I couldn't get Satire: From Henry the VIII to Obama but I'll get it next year.

Arg this is pretty much the story of my life. I'm a double major in a science and an art field and scheduling everything without conflicts is a nightmare. The arts stuff blocks my schedule at least 6hrs a day M-F every semester. That means any lab longer than 3hrs is a no go during the school year and my academic classes all have to be squeezed in the morning or after 6PM. Being in class straight for 12hrs is completely normal for me. I don't mind though, I love science and I love my art (most of the time)!! Mostly I can fit in whatever doesn't work during the regular semesters over the summer. I've gone to school year round since freshman year but have never had much of a summer vacation growing up anyways because I still have to train year round. I need to keep myself busy!
