Irritating Girl: If you get even a parking ticket, you won't get into medical school. They just straight up won't accept you unless you have like a 4.0 and cure cancer.
Me: Um, no. That's definitely not true. I mean, if its a DUI or something that's different, but...
Girl: No, it IS true. The dean at *so and so* medical school told me if you have any blemish on your record, AT ALL, you don't have a chance. That they do background checks and flag everything. I got a parking ticket before, so she told me not to bother applying. I'm going to get my Ph.D instead.
Me: Hmm, I still think...
Girl: No, really, I heard it from the DEAN. You just can't get in.

Sorry, missed this post and responded to a less thorough one below! I suppose I just grew up in a household with a very different attitude...if it's not severe enough to warrant ER care, you suck it up! And no, stitches-level complaints ≠ ER care (at least if the town has an urgent care somewhere, or if you decide butterfly bandages will be sufficient, or you don't mind the scar)

That being said, my family does have a LOT of chronic things (diabetes, obesity and all the fun things that come with, etc...) but I thought they had a specialist for that? Or something, I know the doc they go to was one they got referred to specifically because of their laundry list of chronic complaints, but tbh I avoid discussing my grandparents' medical info as much as possible because they refuse to do anything to benefit their own health, and I don't like sitting there listening to a list of complaints when I know they won't take even the smallest step to fix the problems. Aaaand I guess THAT is why I will never be a PCP in a nutshell. :scared:

You can refer patients to endo for diabetes, but a PCP SHOULD be able to manage diabetes on their own. Especially obesity, HTN, hypercholestermia. Refractory, complicated cases that are the beyond the scope can be referred to endo for follow ups. PCPs do refer, but as a supplement, not always to dump them onto their service and never see them again. E.g.: referring them to cardio for further management of angina AND seeing their PCP for everything else. Or Seeing a ID doc for management of HIV meds in addition to their regular PCP. I definitely agree with the "Young people never see their doc. but older people see them monthly, or even weekly". Of course as a young healthy person you've had only sports physicals. Cause there are no chronic diseases in you, and other than well child checks, there weren't any acute issues to see your doctor for. ED vs. outpatient....well let's just some of the gen. public need to review the term emergency!

I know this is a delayed response and topic is over with...sowwy 😛

By that logic she will also have a difficult time getting into graduate school. :nono:

Me: Oh no no, most kids who wanna be doctors major in a science, like biology!
Girl: Nah, I just want to be Pre-med, I'm not into the science stuff.

No, but if you are unintelligent, being attractive goes a long way. 😎

Im getting the idea that you are attractive so everyone thinks youre not smart? lol

Well, I didn't wanna sound condescending by saying that specifically. But... yeah. I know people in general aren't expected to be intelligent. Just "average" I guess. But sometimes it can be insulting the specific way that people act so surprised that you can have lucky genetics and a brain. I'm not condescending about it, but at the same time I can't try to act as though it's not true, because that seems to piss people off more and make them think I'm trying to brag or something. Honestly I care a hell of a lot more about intellect than looks. Sometimes I would much rather be invisible. I enjoy fashion. Excuse me for not wearing frumpy clothes and big glasses. There seems to be this idea that being attractive means you're a social butterfly and only care about superficial things. But in reality I'm extremely introverted and I have a legit passion for learning.

Looks really don't mean that much. Not to me, anyway. That's why I prize knowledge, because there's skill and effort behind that as opposed to a lucky genetic makeup. Being knowledgable is something to be respected. Looks is just something you have, so it's more like, "Okay that's nice." I guess I'm technically bias, though.

I really try to avoid talking about this subject because inevitably people take it the wrong way. But it can be good to get frustration out... Sigh.

I empathize. I am often not perceived as an intelligent person at first glance, either. It can be frustrating BUT at the same time it gives you an advantage when people underestimate you 😉

True dat. Haha. It can be especially frustrating knowing you can't discuss real issues you have without seeming condescending. Being attractive certainly doesn't mean you're a superstar who has it all, as some people think. But props to you if you do. 👍

Yea I understand.
Im definitely not an uggo, but I'm not a model either.

Personally I dont mind if a girl is average looking versus pretty.
As long as she isnt a fatty. And its not the reason you think.

I look for discipline and commitment in girls. If youre overweight or obese, it tells me that you dont care enough about your body to take care of it, that you lack the discipline and commitment to treating your body right.

I've seen a few hot girls that are also intelligent. youre not the only one. 👍

Glad to see that I'm getting positive responses from this. 🙂 I agree with you on the "fatty" thing. When people say that there's a group of people in the background saying, "What if she has a medical problem and it's not her fault?" Whatever. If it's a legit problem then the judgment won't be there, so the argument still stands. Anything is possible... I'm sure Jillian Michaels would have something to say about that.

👍

People think I am shallow if I dont go out with someone who is a chubster.
Sorry but if I have to work hard to look good, then so do you.

Everyone has their preferences. Short guys and fat girls have the worst end of the stick, but I agree. If someone is grossly overweight from not taking care of themselves, it does call into question how well they take care of the other parts of their lives.

Including medicine.
I don't hold anything against you that you are born with or what you can't change.

Absolutely. There are people who, like me, are genetically predispositioned to weight gain and it can be a bitch to stay in shape. But you have to make the effort. It takes a lot of self-discipline and dedication but if you cannot show either of those traits, I don't know of I want to be your patient.

I come from a family with type 2 diabetes in every generation and a few cases of metabolic syndrome.

So I am like you in that regard. It just means we have to work harder than most, but we don't use it as an excuse though.

Okay when someone asks what your major is, are you supposed to just say "Biology" and let them assume you're a Pre-med? Or do you tell them you're on a Pre-med track? Or do you just say "Biology, but I want to go to medical school"?

Trying to find the best way to tell people my major without sounding like an arrogant Pre-med.

Well since I'm a psychology major, I like to shock people when I say "I major in psychology..." Which is a dead end field unless you have a doctorate, "... And I should be applying to some medical schools in x number of semesters." People generally start asking a billion questions after that.

Are you saying that this is your way of not seeming arrogant? It seems like you're trying to get people to treat you special. My close friend is a psych major pre-med. He's absolutely brilliant. He doesn't try to get this sort of attention and it certainly doesn't phase him. I would recommend being modest, genuinely. Because being a doctor doesn't really make you better than anyone else. I hope you realize that.

Also, this thread seems to be getting derailed. I unfortunately don't have a funny quote from an uninformed pre-med to get it going again, though.

We can continue this in the republic of Texas thread.

Overheard in my Pre-med lounge.
Dude: how many hours of shadowing do you have?
Dude 2: what is shadowing?
Dude: it's where you follow a doctor around for several hours to show med schools that you know what you're getting into.
Dude 2: why would I need to do that? I know I want to be a doctor. That's why I am applying to medical school in the first place. Duh!

Maybe he'll learn eventually...

Well, I didn't wanna sound condescending by saying that specifically. But... yeah.

I agree with everyone else, we shouldn't judge intellect based on looks, my initial comment was meant as a joke, etc etc

But hold the phone. You ma'am have just made an extraordinary claim. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. So with that being said:

Pics or it didn't happen.

First of all, what gain would I have by lying about something like that on a forum? It's not like I'm trying to seduce anyone. My icon used to be me but I changed it per wise suggestions of other people on SDN. Second, I would rather not post pictures of myself on here because some people made the point of adcoms potentially finding you, then your posts, whatever. I don't want to leave any sort of trail. If you're so interested I can give you a link to my blog via a PM. I'm just not gonna post it publicly.

No you missed the whole point actually. I meant that I love how every major/minor has their own stigmas about them and psychology seems to be one of the least thought of when considering pre-med course work to people, so I'm not sure where you were going with that one. People generally get a worried look on their faces when you tell them your major as a psych student, but it changes when you answer their further questions with a pre med answer. I'm not doing it for the attention and I sure as hell don't care if anyone knows I'm a premed or not, but thanks for the assumption though 🙂

Btw you just have me an good example of a typical "informed premed" quote!

You are definitely "that guy"

I'm not sure what you mean, I'm not arrogant about it and I guess the post is being read wrong, where I am from psychology is very flooded and generally people don't give a hoot about it, so you "take two steps back and three forward when you say yeah I'm a psych student, and then say well I'm taking pre med stuff too.."

I personally don't see a problem with this.

You are just digging yourself deeper and deeper here. You are definitely "that guy." Cringe.

Says the guy who does...stuff. I shiver just thinking about what stuff you've done. If "doing stuff" is not a red flag for adcoms, I don't know what is.

But seriously, let's get back to the stories and stop harassing that guy.

This contradicts everything else you've said.

I hope you see the contradiction now. If you truly didn't care, you wouldn't mention that you're premed at all, but you actually admit to liking the "shock" of bringing it up. You may think you're being sly, but the person you're talking to knows what you're trying to do. That's what makes you "that guy."
