GA-PCOM 2009- Where are you?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the first accepted students day turned out the be the financial aid workshop. I heard about a bbq during my interview but wasnt really told any specifics. Maybe it is in coordination with the grand opening, but I think they have decided to postpone that until after classes begin.

sketches, where are you going to be moving into? Has anyone else used the PROMOVE company to find an apartment?

Congrats all newbies and welcome! It would be nice to have a get together over the summer, whether it be formal or informal for those who didn't get to make it to the FA meeting. I actually had a close call today. Instead of my school sending my diploma today, they sent me a letter saying that I had not completed all the reqs for graduation. I was freaking out. BUT I got it all fixed with the registrar's office...*whew*.

I might be willing to scoot on down the I-75 corridor for a get together if given ample time to plan. That would be fun!!!! ROADTRIP!!!!!!!

Hey everyone,
I'm happy and sad about saying this, but I won't be attending GAPCOM this fall. I unexpectedly received a call yesterday from Univ. of Mississippi and they took me off their waitlist. It's closer to home and I get in-state tution. I can't pass this opportunity up.
It's such a bummer too because it's been so fun getting to know you guys. I hope that this will make another wait-lister as happy as I was yesterday. GAPCOM is going to be awesome (b/c of the faculty and students!) and I'm going to try and visit the next time I'm in Atlanta to see how everything has progressed.
I'm still going to keep my website up and I'm probably going to keep posting on sdn (keeps me entertained at work) to see what's up.
If you guys have any questions, Aisha at GAPCOM is your woman, she is super helpful with anything-roommate lists, bbqs, anything. Give her a call at the GAPCOM offices.
Jen

I contacted PCOM today, and they said that they will be holding more interviews for the Georgia Campus, but they are not sure as to when, my application is still being reviewed. I don't know how many acceptances they have actually sent out. When did you have your interview? was it on the georgia campus? What did you think of it, was it nice?

Anyone else heard from GA-PCOM lately? I know of just 4 or 5 that will be in the pioneering class with me. There must be more than that out there, they are accepting 80! Chime in anytime....

Wow, so they're going to hold even more interviews? I thought the last interview weekend was April 22nd and 23rd. Any idea what that means?

Has anyone receive any financial aid from FAFSA? When will we know?

I am sorry to see you go but you definitely don't want to pass up the in-state tuition 🙂 . GAPCOM costs too much! So, you will be a MD and not DO, right? Anyway, when it comes to the real practice world, I don’t think there is a lot of difference between the two. Congratulations and all the best to you!

Someone posted in the pre-osteo forum about getting an interview invite today from pcom:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=201022

Im not sure if thats philly or atl, they didnt specify. I think it is strange that they would still be interviewing in GA. When i interviewed they told me that that my interview date was the last one (march 31st) but that they did reserve days in april, in case they need to interview more candidates.

As of 4/8/05 only 4 seats remained open....according to this thread:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=192235

I know the waitlist has opened up now, so why would they need to continue interviewing? Has everyone on the waitlist gotten an acceptance?

You could call the office, but they may not reveal everything you want to know. Goodluck

So whens this summer get together we all keep talking about 🙂

Do any of you remember when we received our first request for the $2000 and if so, did you receive a letter saying it was non-refundable? Please state the date and the exact wording from the letter if you find it.
Please reply on this, I have $2000 riding on it and all of you know how much that is to someone about to go to medical school who has no money left....

The postmark on the bill I received is April 15th. I do not see anywhere on the bill that it is nonrefundable, but I assumed that it was not refundable.
The bill has amount due, payment options, form to fill out (name, credit card, phone, signature).

This may be a different case, but I received my pre-payment invoice recently(probably a few weeks after you got your letter), but it does say in bold This deposit is non-refundable. There have been several threads about the PCOM and GAPCOM deposits and whether they are refundable or not...so you may want to search it, I'm not sure if they came up with an answer though.

Hey you guys,
Thanks for responding so quickly. I'm talking to PCOM-GA an PCOM and we're in the process of trying to figure this out.
Thanks again,
Jen

That is unusual that they would be holding more interviews when they have more than enough people crossing their fingers and toes on the waitlist. Seem odd to anyone else? But hey, if that is what they told you then good luck with your interview.

Biosail,

Good luck with your future plans, you were a big help in starting up the connection we all have now. From my understanding the deposit was non-refundable (to go towards tuition) but talk to Aisha and see what she can do.

Woohoo, I got in to GA-PCOm, just got my letter on Wednesday. Whoever it was that dropped their acceptance to let me in, thanks!!

Anybody from Tampa FL going to GA-PCOM?

SO GA-PCOM is going to cost me more than my first-born, huh? Anybody got any money-making schemes?

Yup, most definitely NOT REFUNDABLE. Just about every school said so, and it says so on the bill in bold lettering.

Hi all! Just got my letter of acceptance today--I'm so thrilled by the news and excited to be part of GAPCOM's founding class with all of you! I am not from Tampa, but from Sarasota, FL which is close by. 🙂

Hey I was born in Tampa...It rocks.. Congradulations!!! -B

Congrats, and welcome to the first class.... I think I have developed this mutant strain of senioritis, I have actually counted the days left for me working at UNC. Oh well, I guess we will be starting classes soon enough.

I was looking in the Merk Manual and it says that the only cure for Senioritis right now is a summer at the beach before med school starts

I guess good thing that I was raised in a beach town, and I think that is a good prescription for a cure.

Hey Biosail,

I haven't been checking this board lately and I am sorry to see you go. However, Congrats!!! That is an opportunity you can't pass up. Thanks for all your help (posting pics from the apartments and creating the website). Thanks again and good luck.

Actually, to the students they accepted earlier in the process, they did not make it clear that the refund was non-refundable. We did not receive a letter with bold print saying non-refundable, nor does any other correspondence say non-refundable. Since this is their first year they are requiring the 2000 deposit, it is not a surpise that this has happened. The newer students are now receiving these letters to keep anyone from being confused.
Admittedly, most of this speculation, that will hopefully be validated (already has been by some staff) by the head honchos up there.

rsbraves- I'm bummed that I never was able to meet any of you, but it's going to be great being the inaugural class - everything will be shaped by the first class! I may come visit if this PCOM deposit thing works out the next time I visit Atlanta.

SO just to clarify this whole idea of holding more interviews..i just talked to Aisha who i believe is in charge of admissions now.. anyways, i asked her if they were holding interviews, and she said no. our class is set right now at 85 people...she said people might have gotten confused b/c PCOM might be holding more interviews NOT GAPCOM...anyways thought i'd let you guys know if you were still wondering!

So were you able to get the 2000 back?

I still haven't heard anything about the $2000. I sent them a packet with a copy of all the emails I have received from GAPCOM that mention the $2000 deposit. They are from three different people, none of them mention non-refundable.
I will follow up tomorrow.

So Ive heard from a few people that they will be down to Duluth during the weekend of June 17th-19th. We were wondering if anyone wanted to get together and hang out. Piedmont Park has been suggested and we can probably bring food and just chill. Is anyone interested? I was going to call Aisha and see if she could help get the word out.

Let me know what you think and what you guys would like to do.

The pub/bar called Park Tavern is right on the edge of the park as well. Great place to sit outside and have a beer, chillout with a great view of the city. They have outside tables. Good food as well.

That sounds like a great idea. It'll be easier to hang out there, then try to get food together at the park.

Sent of my depost middle of month
PCOM-GA 2009

I just spoke with Carol Fox and she says no-go on the refund. She even admitted there was nothing sent to me that said non-refundable. She did however say that Dr.Evans mentioned that all deposits were non-refundable in the interview and at the FA meeting. Considering that 20 or so students didn't show up, where does that leave the other students? In addition, I was sent a copy of the minutes/outline of the meeting - no mention of non-refundable. Even if he did say it, it's not written down. When you have a policy like that, it needs to be written down. I, personally (and this is not due to selective listening) don't remember Dr.Evans saying non-refundable. Needless to say, this is not over.

I understand how frustrated you must be. During my interview Dr.Evans stated that the deposit was nonrefundable just like most other schools. I too lost 2K to another school because I chose to attend GAPCOM. It stinks... period. I am of the opinion that everything happens for a reason. I like to think that the 2K I lost held my spot just in case I didn't get in to my first choice school (as it should). Best of luck -B

I lost a big deposit as well and it hurt. However, it was worth it to go to the school I want to attend. I wish they didn't have the huge deposit requirement and would do a match process to ensure seats instead. I don't know what recourse you have now. I am sure a court would ask why you didn't inquire if the deposit was refundable/partially refundable before sending it in. Good luck with your pursuit biosailgirl.

Sorry to hear about the deposit. Good luck with it, and definitely keep us posted as to the final outcome.

I'm lost... and still waiting... and wondering how much longer I'm going to have to wait...

waitlisted... blech!

Has everyone gotten their PCOM email address? If so, when did you get it?

Thanks,

I havent gotten mine yet either.

I got my new email address about three days ago. I even tested it out and it works. I received a letter in the mail detailing how to use it.

Alright guys, I am looking for suggestions on exactly when and where everyone wants to get together.

I think we have decided to meet at Park Tavern in Piedmont Park during the weekend of June 17th-19th. Does Saturday night the 18th sound good? around 9:30-10:00pm? Anyone with different suggestions please let me know.

I figured it would be easier for a few of us on sdn to figure it out before I have Aisha mass email it to the other 80 or so people in our class.

Thanks for all the positive feedback...this should be fun

What is the get together going to consist of?...drinks, dinner, dancing, all of the above?

That sounds good to me.

Count me in, too. I just moved into my apartment and I'm ready to do some serious hanging out/relaxing before classes start. 👍

Hey guys,

Hope all had a good weekend. I think there is some confusion as to where the Park Tavern and the park itself are. Thought I could be of some help as people have been PMing me left and right.

Piedmont Park is in Midtown Atlanta (smack dab in the middle) on 10th st. The Park Tavern (where we will meet for drinking and Premedschool partying) is at 10th st. and Monroe Dr. Cool place with outdoor tables and indoor as well. Great view of the city at night. I am enclosing a link with a map of the park. If you are coming North or South you want to take 75 N/S to 10th/14th st. exit. Let me know if you have any other questions. Should be fun.
