GA-PCOM 2009- Where are you?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,

I sent Aisha an email with the date and location that we wanted to meet. I suggested to her to email everyone at their non-pcom addressed because not everyone, like myself, has received this email address yet.

I am a little bummed though because this morning she emailed me back telling me that she's going email everyone at their pcom addresses because it would be too time consuming otherwise.

I wont even be getting my own email...not everyone is gonna hear about the get together. 👎

Well hopefully everyone that is on the forum will at least know about it. I tried sending a mass email to everyone that I have. But that is only about 15 people.

I'm so glad that we have decided to get together and meet before school starts! What a wonderful idea! Count me in too! I look forward to meeting all of you!

The park looks like a great place to meet. Beer inside of a park is a new concept to me (its illegal to drink inside a state park here in TN) . Lets do this... Cheers-Brian

Beano,

We are not going to bring beer into the park. There is a bar inside the park called Park Tavern. That is the beauty of the whole thing! We can drink and enjoy the park and it's totally legal.

I'd love to be there at the get together, but missing Father's Day on Sunday is a big concern of mine...since if I came Saturday night with y'all, I would have to spend the night and wouldn't be able to get home until late Sunday...oh well-if y'all do it that weekend, have a great time and maybe we can all get together again before school starts!

I was planning on coming, but I forgot that's Father's Day. I don't think I could go either, sorry guys 🙁 . But I do hope we'll have another get together before school starts, maybe one in mid July?

That is the same for me too. I can't be there cause not only is it Father's Day but also my parents' anniversary. Sorry. I hope we can get together again.

Can we get a tally of who WILL be there?

Hi everyone! I haven't been on this thread yet...I am getting so excited about this upcoming adventure we call OMS! When are you guys getting together? I'd love to make the drive to ATL for some good fun before the storm.

Kiley

Hello all,
I just wanted to give greetings to my future classmates. I interviewed at the last possible date (got a late start), got waitlisted, started making plans for my year off, and too my suprise got accepted about 3 weeks ago. I'm looking foward to working with you all very soon.

Joshua

I don't think I'm going to be able to make the journey. I'm six hours away and I don't want to miss Father's Day. It sounds like an awesome time and a great opportunity to get together. Hope you guys have fun!

Kiley

I'd give you another weekend but I'll be out of town for all of July. See you guys in August!

I got accepted to GA-PCOM back in March. I have been livine in GA for 10 +myrs so i am pretty familiar with the place. Just wanted to say hi to everyone here.

Hey guys,

Let me know if you want to start an email thread. That way we can all be in touch about what's happening. As of this month:

-Yes, $2000 is due in May and I obviously don't think we will have financial aid by then

-There are updates on PCOM.edu about the school and some good hospitals they have made relations with here in Atlanta

-They are still in the construction phase and it looks like they will be working right up until the 11th hour

-I was planning a trip up to the school site, but I am a practicing chiropractor and have had my hands full (no pun intended)

-I am here in Atlanta so if you guys need any advice about the area I can give it to

That is all I got for now,

Hello future classmates!!

I am finally getting around to joining the forum...I admit-I don't access SDN as often as I should!! I was accepted in February, and attended the FA meeting in April. I'm SO excited!! I live in Raleigh, NC, now, and unfortunately, won't be moving to GA until just before classes start. I cannot make it to ATL over Father's Day...and am quite jealous of those who can 🙂 , but hopefully (as others have mentioned) we can have another get together closer to when classes begin. Also, just read the AJC article...very nice! We made front page of the Gwinnett Co paper, too, a couple months ago...very exciting! OK, enough babbling...can't wait 'til August!!

Has anyone received their award letter yet? If so, when did you receive it. Today I got a letter from the FA office and thought it was my award letter, but it was only some info on Stafford loan consolidation.
Thanks in advance for any information

Welcome new posters! Congratulations on your acceptances. It's good to hear from everyone.

I just received my award letter today. It was mailed out from Philly on the 8th, so you should get it pretty soon if you haven't gotten it already.

I'm going to try to make it to Park Tavern next weekend, but it's a pretty long way to go (Mapquest says it is a 45 minute drive from Duluth without traffic). How many of you all are living in the area now? Do you all live close to the city, or is this just a good meeting place for people coming from out of town?

There are several of us driving down from NC and SC...so we'll have a few hours of a drive. The drive may be less than 45 min, sometimes mapquest isnt totally accurate. It should be a good time though.

No traffic 35-40 minutes depending on how fast you drive

Cool. I just found out this morning that I will definitely be in town this weekend, so I'll be there. I can't wait to meet everyone!

Hi--I got my award letter the same day that I received the info about loan consolidation...so you should be getting it any time. They both came in the mail on Friday.

Cabu,

Are you located near Philly? I got my loan consol. letter but no award letter.

Would anyone who is going to the fiesta on Saturday consider taking pictures and posting them on our unofficial website for those who won't be able to go? Pretty please? 😀

Sure thing. I'll bring my digicam and post some pictures when I get home (as long as that is okay with everyone). Sorry you can't make it Saturday. Maybe we can plan another get-together this summer for those who couldn't make it this time.

I got the consolidation letter but no award letter yet. Hopefully will get it this week. I may go to the meeting this Saturday, haven't make up my mind yet.

By the way, I also live in the metro-Atlanta area and if anyone need real estates advice, feel free to PM me. I am a real estate agent as well.

Ciao! 🙂

Hey guys,

I am probably going to be there on Saturday, so I will be more that happy to take pictures. However, I am completely technologically challenged, so someone may have to explain to me how to post pictures on the site 😳 .

Also, I got both my award letter and my loan consolidation letters in the mail on Saturday. When I talked to Aisha on Friday, she said we should all be getting them within the next week or so.

Dana,
If you'll take the pictures, I can walk you through how to post them on the website--just PM me after you get back. The website, actually, is very user-friendly as well. It takes a lot of the guess-work out of uploading pictures. Thanks a million. 😉

This is probably a dumb question but is anyone going to apply for private loans? I know I am going to have to. If so, when are you going to apply and how much do you think you should request for or are eligible to request for?

Thanks

KYmedic,

I looked into private loans with my bank (Suntrust). They give very good private, education loans with low interest and no payments while in school (basically just like federal loans). The amount they can give you is mandated by PCOM, which will allow a maximum of approx. $18,000/yr. But, that is also dependent on how much federal Stafford you are getting. Basically, if they don't think you need the money, then they aren't going to give it to you. Based on my personal financial situation, I was awarded the full amount from govn't loans ($38,500), and PCOM will additionally allow me to take the maximum in private loans, too ($18K). Hope this helps!!

Hey Cabujold,

How did you find out how much $ PCOM would approve you for in loans? If you talked to someone in financial aid, could you tell me who you spoke with? Thanks for your help!

Hey Georgia Peeps,
I am starting at the Philly campus in August. I had a chance to talk to the security director up here the other day. He had just been on a trip to visit The Ga campus and said the construction was going ahead of schedule. Said it looks great. About the private loans. If your budget is the same as ours you will be able to take a maximum of $18,159 in private loans. Definitly call them to check though. I decided to apply for the max, and prob take like 15K a year so if I am ever in a jam I can go ahead and take more.

Good luck

Sorry, Dana, I don't remember who exactly I spoke with, but it was a woman in the financial aid office in Philly. They take a look at what you are awarded for federal loans, then make a figure based on that. If you were eligible for the max $38,500, then PCOM will allow you to take $18,159 in private. I would think that anyone in FA office should be able to give you that information. Hope that helps some!

Hey you all!

I will be at the park on Saturday night. Who else will be there. I thought I would drive down on Friday (tomorrow) but changed my mind. Maybe I am already getting homesick. Anyway, I plan to be there. My sister-in-law is coming with me. You can guess which one of us is me!! See you there.

I will be there between 9:30 and 10:00 at the Park Tavern with a Sam Adams by my side. Look forward to seeing everyone or anyone.

I had a great time. About 10 students showed up, along with some friends and family members. It was really nice to meet some of our future classmates, and I think we are all going to have a great year together. Here are a few pictures from last night:

http://ga-pcom.virtualsketches.com/

I hope everyone had a safe trip home. We should do this again soon. 👍

that is a great picture of some guy on a bike.... okay it was me. No worries I didn't break the bike 😀 It was def an enjoyable time.

It looks like everyone was having a good time. I'm a little jealous that y'all got to bond already 😀 . The park looked absolutely gorgeous!

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to say that the get together on Sat. was awsome. Sorry i had to leave early but would love to get together again sometime in july and hopefully those who couldn't come last Sat. would be able to join us.

Hey guys, I was actually accepted to GA-PCOM back in december, but didn't know about the forum till just recently. Just wanted to say hi and it looks like we are going to have a lively bunch come August. 🙂

I did have a good time at the Tavern. It was quite an adventure getting there. Kelly was with me and my sister-in-law (who was driving). I was a poor excuse for a navigator and we got mondo lost. But, in a fun way. Kelly is great company and such a good sport. Her parents were in tow behind us in a big super-cab pick up, making all the wrong turns with us. It was hilarious. Not sure her folks thought so, but they did not complain. They finally got to the Tavern without us and patiently waited. While Kelly and I sat with the "class", her parents kept my sis-in-law entertiained. I told my husband it was a stressful weekend, but he said, "sounded like you had FUN!" Yeah, that is what I meant, it was "good" stress. I am glad I made the trip down there and look forward to another.

Just wanted to say, "Thanks," to whoever posted the pics. And my hat is off to the folks who planned this event. I think that is Trupti, and Brian. You did a super job!
