Go Dawgs! Goin' Dancing!!!

Heck yeh! I can't believe GA pulled through and won some games! They looked really strong this weekend. What was the deal with the crowd? Tech stadium was <30% full.

More than 20,000 people had tickets, tech only holds 10,000. Moved to tech b/c of hole in roof, no way to decide who gets in and who doesn't, only family/friends/VIPs get in.

Sucks, but the SEC would have done it any other way if they could, they had to give back hundreds of thousands in ticket refunds.

This thread has been awfully quiet as of late with GA acceptances (except for dd128 going to Houston, Congrats!). Has anybody heard word from friends or other forums about any acceptances recently? As far as what I've heard, there are tons of people still waiting to hear back from MCG.

From what I have read, MCG ended their interviews on Thurs, March 6th. After this date, they are meeting 9x to make their acceptances and waitlist list. My guess would be that they wouldn't send out acceptance letters until they had that process finished. Then, waitlist letters will follow by 2 weeks?

So, maybe by the end of this week there will be some acceptances trickling in.

On the other hand, Mercer isn't meeting until the 22nd? and by the 28th? will have their acceptances and waitlists completed.

Good luck! I know I'm not sleeping very well these days.

Mercer's final meeting is on March 26th and the last day for interviews is the 25th. I was not told about another meeting before that on my interview day. There should be a relatively large number of acceptances rolling out at that point with waitlist letters coming out after their meeting on the first wednesday in April.

And I don't think many people are sleeping much these days.😀:scared::laugh:

Ok I had an interview with Mercer pretty recently and here are the dates that were given to us

Next adcom meeting: March 19th
Final Interview Date: March 26th
and from this sheet of paper in front of me:
"All acceptance letters will be out by March 30th of the matriculation year"

Just giving the Mercer hopefuls a heads up, good luck to us all

Good prep for med school! Lot of late nights (and not the good kind).

It's not as bad as you'd think. In fact, my schedule now is more regular than when I was an undergrad...of course some of that probably has to do with marriage.

Seriously though, I'm up at 4:50, studying by 6:15 (its quiet at the school at that time). Group is from 9:00-12:00. I go home and eat. Start studying again by 1:30, and go till six or seven. My wife and I work out together in the evenings and I'm in bed no later than 10:00.

Of course, that's years one and two...ask me again when I'm a third year!

That is 8 hours of study a day. That would be virtually impossible at MCG, with our time occupied from 9-5, right?

Well...it depends on who you talk to. I don't think lecture is required at MCG and they have a pretty good note-taking service from what I hear. I'm too anal not to go to lecture, however, so I would probably be up a lot later if I was at MCG.

Lecture is from 8-12 at MCG. We have things (standardized patients, small group discussions, preceptor in hospital, and electives in the spring) in the afternoon 2-3 days every other week.

Hey thanks! That was the best thing I've heard all day!

Pretty lousy day, but in all fairness it probably would be the best thing I would hear on almost any day...

😕

Nevermind, you know what I mean.

I feel like I know so much about Mercer (been there more, more info @ interview, you guys talk about Mercer alot, and we get Mercer students in rotations at the office) and nothing about MCG.

can anyone please help? what other DO schools are GA Residents applying to? I know the one in Atlanta. What else? Is there other DO schools that don't mind having or maybe even favor GA residents??? Please help. Thank you

I've known some that applied to WVCOM and had success getting in. Unless they've made it more restrictive, their mission used to be very similar to Mercer's and thus they admitted many of the same type students. Not sure if they're still open. There are other DO schools not associated with a public college that are also friendly to out of state apps. NOVA, LECOM, etc.

Pick a couple, go to their web-sites and see...that's probably the best way to get the latest. Happy hunting!

Yes, they do have a rural/underserved mission similar to Mercer's, and they've recruited at places like NGCSU for students. However, it is VERY expensive, even by private osteopathic school standards ($72k - $78k/year for nonresidents). Keep that in mind if you are looking around at other DO schools.

I also should say that the first month or two or each semester seemed to have more afternoon things packed in. The first month of this semester we had some extra standardized patient programs every two weeks. The first module also had anatomy clinical afternoon (just 1pm-2pm) lectures.

But lecture itself only goes from 8-12.

I spoke with Ms. Putnam at the Admissions Office the other day. The adcom meeting for March 19th was cancelled due to The Match. The last regular meeting will be March 26th, and applicants who make the first cut will be notified by March 30th. They will be determining the waitlist on April 2nd.

Thank you all for your wonderful input! I will be applying to both MD and DO schools, but I have not made a final list of which school to apply to. 🙁 . Anyways, tuition is not too big of an issue to me right right now, because upon acceptance to any school, I will be getting a scholarship from the Government. Thank you all!

Thank you bioman! What other DO schools do you recommend? Sorry, I am not sure. My darn premed advisor is a bum and is hardly no help to me. You and people like you here at SDN are my only guiding light! Thank you!!! 🙂

Heya!

Just to let you know some of the DO schools require a redicuously high deposit to hold your spot. So, I wouldn't apply in August to these schools unless you are certian that you want to go there. Last year, I interviewed at a DO school in September and got an acceptance the following week. In the letter, was a "must have your deposit by December 15th and another by March 15th" to hold your spot, letter. By December they wanted a NON REFUNDABLE $2,000 deposit and another $1,000 by March 15th.

I did not apply early decision and couldn't believe these figures and the fact that they were non-refundable. While the school was very nice, I was not willing to make this type of a deposit for a school that I wasn't sure I wanted to attend (especially before MCG and Mercer had gotten back to me).

I withdrew my acceptance and was subsequently waitlisted at MCG and Mercer last year. As you can tell, I'm back in it again. Looking back though, my fiance and I made the right decision as she wants to attend P.T. school and there wasn't one near the DO school.

This was WVCOM. Very nice campus, anatomy lab, etc.. But, the AVERAGE debt was $300,000 after 4 years.

Good luck and I hope you find the best school for you!

$300,000?!?!?!...I'll never complain about Mercer's tuition again! Holy crap! I'd rather take my chances at a Caribbean school than be $300K in the hole starting out....but, I guess if you're going to receive the HPSP it's probably a good option.

My second application cycle was very similar fahimaz7. I got wait-listed at the allopathic schools where I applied and was accepted to GA-PCOM. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay the deposit until May 15...but boy was I sweating it. I knew if I cut that check and then got off the wait-list at Mercer, MCG, or Morehouse, I'd be out $2,000. I ended up writing the check, but then asked PCOM for a deferment...they granted the deferment AND refunded my $2000! I was very happy.

Does anyone know how DO tuition compares to schools like Emory and Mercer?

WVSOM was...48k? And I think that was without fees etc. They suggested 80k/year to cover the costs of attendence.

RMVCOM is 40ish/year.

That brings up another point for armymt...Isn't there a cap on how much the armed forces will cover for med school expenses? I think the Navy will pay up to $160k for a four year commitment. If that's the case, then HPSP will cover about half the cost of WVSOM. Unless you moved to West Virginia, I wouldn't even consider this school unless I was completely sure that HPSP covered the entire cost.

If I remember correctly, LECOM-Bradenton had a tution rate of ~26K/year. This is better than Mercer's current rate. Also, the cost of living seemes to be better in this area than many others. If I was going DO, I would definitely consider them.

Okay, here is a question not many people would be able to answer:

Doing HPSP, you are considered a member of the military (I think...). That said, for purposes of residence and taxes, military members are considered citizens of any state they choose. So could you get in state tuition for WVCOM and avoid the scholarship cap problems? Probably not, but I thought I would put that out there.

So another meeting today? It will be nice to hear something today. Good luck everyone!

No Mercer ADCOM meeting today, Match Day Golf Tournament. Next and final acceptance meeting will be on March 26.

No good news today🙁👎

Upon acceptance for HPSP, you'll get a commission as an Officer in the Reserve, not active duty. If you were active duty, then out-of-state tuition is usually waivered. Correct me if I am wrong, but that does not apply to Soldiers in the reserves.

Thank you, hmm, I am not certain how much the military will cover, if not 100%. Let me look into it.

Just a guess. I live in an army town, but know little about such matters.

So does that mean that if we don't hear back from Mercer by 26th of March, we will either be rejected or waitlisted?

Nope. Not everyone gets a call from their committee member by the end of the day. Some people don't know about their status until they get the envelope and some people get calls from Mrs. Putnam.

That's what I've read over the years.

I got my waitlist from Mercer April 4th last year.

Wow, March has really flown by, the 26th is in a week...

Febuary seemed normal, and I was dying waiting for January to end, so maybe August will be here soon!

I bet we get acceptances from MCG before the end of the week.... Anyone taking that bet?

I'd be willing to bet that all of the acceptances at MCG will be mailed in early April. But I hope it's next week.

We are talking MCG here, huge number of files to be reviewed, and I would place my over/under for mass mailings at about April 11, with the waitlist going out a week after.

But then again I have no I-Dea what I'm talking about

A friend of mine just had an interview at Mercer a couple of weeks ago. They will let him know what they decide next week.

Well, as far as I know, I think HPSP will cover 100% tuition. My HPSP person is out on leave, but I'll get the information from her once she reports back to duty.

Here is a snipet I found at the military forum here at SDN.

What are the benefits?

Monthly Stipend of roughly $600 every 2 weeks for 21 pay periods + 3 pay periods at rank pay (2nd Lt) for completion of yearly ADT training

Total Yearly Pay in School (approximate): $12,600 + $3,800 = $16,400 after taxes

All Books, Fees, and Tuition to the medical school of your choice paid

Adventure, jazz, props from the public, a nifty uniform, and the sense of pride

Rank of 2Lt while in school and promotion to Captain upon graduation. Almost all military physicians make Major before their commitment is up.

If their last interview date was March 6, which is what I read on here, then that gives them a month. But I'm willing to bet that a number of apps have been "removed" and they are now looking at the late interviewees, like myself.

But like you said, I have no idea. I just hope sooner then later.

MCG tends to be the slowest on the ball, I wouldn't hold my breath for any news anytime soon. Mercer, I'm not too sure about.

I'd say that's not too bad for the small school no one heard of who only turns out "lowly" primary care doctors.

So if you're holding an acceptance letter to this school and are thinking about going somewhere else, or if you are sure you're coming here but worry about the school's reputation...don't. The evidence speaks for itself. As I've stated in other posts, you can be successful wherever you're willing to work hard, and I can tell you that those matching in the residencies listed above worked hard and will be excellent doctors.
