Has anyone here done the IM residency at Geisinger, or at least a sub-I or elective there? What was your experience? Positive / negative aspects?

I can tell you a bit. I matched there, will be starting in July, so I guess more to come.

One of my good friends did her whole 3rd and 4th year there (from Temple med) and she liked it. I know in our incoming intern class we have 2 people from Temple, 1 from Jefferson, and alot of DO's (I think PCOM rotates there as well).

The environment from what I could perceive and what she has told me is extremely supportive of the residents, with alot of research (new Hood center), in house fellowships of everything with Cards, GI, Nephro, Critical Care (with additional of Pulmonary this year), Rheumatology.

From what I can understand the strongest research is in Cards and GI in that order.

The benefits/salary are amazing for the area and we plan on buying a house soon.

Hopefully other people can chime in here who actually did rotations or residency here.

Congrats on matching - seems like a solid option for IMGs

Thanks, thierryhenry. Sounds very nice. What is the area like?

Geisinger is nice (there's carpeting upstairs!), and the area is like out of a print by Currier and Ives. They have residencies and fellowships in just about everything - including a MOHS derm fellowship (when I interviewed there 10 years ago, there was only one thing they didn't have, and I forget what it was). It was in their basic science lab that the angiotensin converting enzyme was first isolated. However, the patient population is 99% white. If you are looking for any race/culture specific maladies, or anything like that, that is difficult to find in Danville.

The geisinger sytems are very good; great EMR; population is mainly white. The location is a small village and not much to do. But you may not have much time anyway in residency. Cost of living is cheap. Faculty is okay - not great. Some are good and some are below average. 👍

Danville is 5,000 people. Very small town. Lewisburg (where Bucknell University) is about 15 minutes west, Bloomsburg is about 15 minutes east.
Cost of living is crazy cheap, both myself and my fiancee start there in July and we just bought a house in Danville, within walking distance of the hospital.
True the diversity is lacking, very whitewashed, but cases come in from everywhere in central PA (tertiary referral center with lifeflight to go get patients)
Very excited to start!
