General question about OCHEM

Going through destroyer. I keep getting tricked when I see some obscure reagent i never heard of
( (CH3)3CO^-K^+ ). then I see in the solutions it was a simple SN12 E12 reaction. is there an algorithm I should follow to help recognize when its just one of these reaction patterns

This is potassium tert-butoxide, a strong, bulky base that is more useful in elimination than substitution. Note because this is a base, E1 is not preferred because under basic conditions, all species should carry negative charges.

You should be able to recognize a tert butyl group is very bulky and if it's an ion, it'll be a strong base.

Whoa Whoa Whoa! Obscure???? This is one of the most important reactions in all of organic chemistry. It is most often used when we want to do an E2 reaction. It is the cleanest way to convert a primary halide into an alkene. Secondary and tertiary halides also form alkenes with Hoffman orientation.
