Over the last year I have worked on a study trying to identify differences in personality between residents in different specialties by giving a personality test to residents at a large Midwestern hospital. We did find a unique personality profile that was more common in general surgery residents. I am reaching out to the 5 specialties with a unique personality type to ask for help picking a label to accurately describe their group.

These interactions are complex and obviously this won't describe everygeneral surgeonbut we think it should accurately describe a sub-population in the field. The personality group that we found most commonly in general surgeons is- independent but does seek approval from others. They are very high in responsibility, resourcefulness, and self-discipline. Like most physicians they are highly cooperative. However they are less spiritual and highly skeptical compared to other doctors. We would summarize this as liking control and being highly skeptical. Hopefully this is a positive spin on the past/false stereotypes of surgeons!

I am hoping you can help me find an accurate label for this particular personality combination. We want it to be accurate and not derogatory. Some possible ideas we had were assertive, decisive, or commanding. I would be very grateful if you could give me input on how people in your field would view these potential labels or if you have a suggestion for a different one.

Thank you.
