Hey guys, I know there are lots of these, but they really help us out. I'd really appreciate any input whatsoever.

Please add to the list!!

Pros for UCI
  • Weather/outdoor activities
  • H/P/F grading system
  • Only Level 1 Trauma Center in Orange County
  • about $85k cheaper than Georgetown over 4 years (instate tuition)
  • Feeds many CA residencies
Pros for Georgetown
  • More prestigious
  • many students match specialties
  • DC is an exciting city
Cons for UCI
  • Less prestigious
  • harder to match a specialty
  • Irvine is boring
Cons for Georgetown
  • Grading system is A/B/C/D/F etc.
  • Expensive
  • far from home
  • weather/hot muggy summers, cold winters. Less nature.

Georgetown is not much more prestigious than UCI....They are both great schools. I would stay in California. UCI's match list is pretty good. I would choose UCI, cheaper, near home, better chance to match in California. Easy choice: UCI.

I agree that Georgetown's undergrad has a name, but the med school isn't really that prestigious. Even if you took out the money factor out, I would still go to UCI. However, if you're looking for something new and you want to get away from California for a while (which is something you should do at least once in your life) then go for Georgetown.

no way I would pick gtown over instate tuition, especially Cali instate. From your list of pros/cons, this should be easy. Remember that getting in your specialty of choice is your prerogative and is based off of what you do as an individual in med school, whether you goto a Harvard or a StateU.

The more I read these threads, the more I'm leaning towards UCI. I'm pretty sure you'd have to work hard at both schools to land a good residency. I doubt that Georgetown's reputation alone could compensate for less than average grades.

Thanks guys!!

I had the same choice...
look at the wayne state (in state tuition) versus Georgetown thread...i couldn't find the link, but it's here.
Hope it helps!

Thanks Maria, this is all really helpfull.

On a sidenote (because I know this topic is discussed a fair amount), I was put on hold for an interview at Irvine. I appealed it, got invited to interview, and was accepted!! So it's not a death sentence to be put on hold.

Well, not if you're competitive numbers-wise. It certainly was a death sentence for my application both times.

I think you are confusing the reputation of Georgetown undergraduate with the medical school. I think UCI and Georgetown medical schools are considered about the same reputation wise. George Washington has the better reputation out of the two DC schools.

Right. UCI would likely give BAM! an edge in landing California residencies, and it is very well known in California. I would definitely choose UCI, even if the tuition was equivalent to Gtown's.

How does GWU have the better rep in DC? Georgetown is ranked while GWU is not. Does GWU choose not participate in US News?

Well I wouldn't say GW has a better rep, although I definitely think it is a better school. I would say Georgetown probably has a slight edge for certain competitive specialties (especially ortho). And US News rankings are pointless.
