Hi,

Just curious about peoples experience finding work and working at a dental lab while finishing undergrad.

How did you approach finding the job? My plan was to go down the phone book, and send each lab in the area a cover letter and resume. Anything else or different I should/could do?

Also what kind of hours and pay would be typical?

Thanks!

It may be difficult depending on the type of worker needed by the lab, b/c most dental labs want certified techs, but some may allow personal training. Sounds like you have the right idea about searching the phone directory, thats what i did... visited 9 labs in town, dressed in business attire, and gave copies of resume to each. Most were already full of workers, some wanted experience, but i was hired by the last lab that i visited. Typical pay is not terrific but you do gain valuable experience. So give it a try, bc the jobs are out there!👍

Personally, I can't find a job as a dental assistant for the life of me. I've worked for my uncle for eight years, and I'm certified to polish, but they want someone permanent or someone that is making a career out of assisting. They won't hire me because I'm predental, even when i try to lie about it. I'm a pretty personable person too, they just want what they want. Also, no one local will hire me because I have the same last name as my uncle...you'll find that some dentists get really cocky about some things like hiring a doctor's family, or predental students.

I wish you the best of luck though, I know what its like to want as much experience as possible. I would just try careerbuilder, job searches, local papers, all of that. You could just try calling dentists/labs too.
good luck!
