Hello!

I go to pharmacy school in Florida (final year) but want to get a residency in North Carolina. I was wanting to know how should I prepare myself differently to secure a residency position in North Carolina where it is possible that the interviewers would not know about my pharmacy school in Florida?

Thanks!

I think it's OK if you're from a different state. Just present yourself well at the interview. There are lots of people that do residencies in states different from their own. Definitely go to midyear though to see what programs in NC you like.

Thanks bacillus1!

You are right...there are many people who do get residencies in states other than the one they went school too! But I just wanted to see if anybody had first hand experience in a situation like it since I had two people telling me that it would be hard if people in NC do not know your school well! And specially when I do not have any rotations in NC! I appreciate your input!

Also can you or anybody on SDN tell me if there is a way on ASHP website if I can see what programs have their booths this year and stuff?

Thanks!

Well, google ASHP residency directory for a listing of programs, if you want to familiarize yourself with what's available in NC. A list of what program will be at what time won't go out until later (I want to say October, but I'm not sure.

Its definitely harder to make an impression on a specific program if they don't know you vs a student that rotated with them but you can also make an impression by contacting them now, inquire about their program, email the program director, put your name out there. More likely than not they will recognize you when you do visit at Midyear.

Thanks Bacillus1! I ll keep an eye on their website for the updates 🙂

Thanks ADN1226...that s a nice point to contact them before the midyear and have that email conversation started. I have heard going to the regional conferences/showcase helps too! I appreciate your input!

I didn't get that impression at all prior to or during the interview process. I'm currently a resident in a state several hours away from the state I went to school in. At times I feel a little "out of the loop" as my co-residents have both done APPE rotations at our site and thus know a little more about the site in general. Also, they both went to a local university that our teaching experience is centered at and many of the clinical pharmacists are professors at. However, I think the program director and preceptors were interested that I was from another part of the country and could offer some different perspectives! It's all about how you spin it in the interview 🙂 Show that you are open-minded; I explained that I heard pharmacy was more progressive in that area, and I was eager to see how clinical pharmacy practice differed in that region of the country.
